Just wondering when or how often to remove and replace the bedding in a run. I have no clue as I don't have any chickens yet. TY

I had my first batch from the hatchery vaccinated. Two I got from C-A-L Ranch. I don’t know if those are or not. The rest weren’t. They were lain an hatche by my girls. No sickness so far with them. What should I do?

I’ve had six roosters and the only one that attacked was the first one I raised inside my house until sixteen weeks. I handled him like the others. The others were his boys laid, hatched by his hens (I raised the girls with him. He just turned out to be a boy) and raised outside in the flock with the mamma. So I think that my the is somewhat true. If you handle them a lot I think they are more friendly. So more is better. Or none. My first Roo was okay when I handled him. He didn’t like it but wasn’t spastic. My baby Roo’s were spastic when I handled them after growing up, but were ok being around me.

Thanks for making this video! I just placed my first order by mail. Last year I just got feedstore chicks. I live in a tinyhouse and was intending on keeping my chicks for the first five weeks in my livingroom with a brooder plate since they'll likely be quieter under there, because last year was very very loud with them under a heat lamp in here!!! I think when my chicks get here I'll have a heat lamp on them for the first day just so they are encouraged to eat and drink. I'll have good earplugs lol.

I love your channel. We have learned so much from it and your chicken breed blogs. It has made us brave enough to order six straight run, well bred Fr Blue Copper Marans (bred for temperament and deep egg color). We have plenty of space and now watching your videos, we are confident in handling the roos we will get. Your tent chick brooder and daily plan on working with chicks will be followed. I ordered a book on clicker training chickens. I did this with my Arabisn years ago, so excited to try this. The chicks arrive first week of June, so we are soaking up this knowledge. Your teaching ability is great. And my near totally deaf husband can understand you, he reads lips, too, so you do a good job communicating in ways you may not have even thought of.

I love your coop ♥️ Australia here. Really hot summers, with heavy rainfall and strong winds. Cold and frost in winter. Chickens free range during the day.

Thank you so much on your advice on safe heat plates. I bought one I thought was too hot to the touch. It would burn my fingers. I saw a video you made about it with a direct link to a safer one. I ordered it from Chewy and received it today. I left it on for quite a while and was pleased to find it didn't get too hot like the other one. I've had chickens in the past, yet I had a lot more to learn. Your videos are very informative and educational. Thank you so much for making them. I hope you can and will continue. I look forward to watching more of them. Take care 😊

PLEASE do a video with pics….those of us that have small flocks NEED to see what you’re talking about. Just put a disclaimer on the video that it’s graphic, and tell them when it’s “safe to watch” if it bothers them. I get SO much info from videos like this. I had to cull 2 of my silkies today. I am TORTURING myself, feeling like I didn’t do it right, or quick enough. Also, I’m a nurse, and seeing the pics of what you’re describing brings so much perspective to me❤I’m so glad I found your channel! I have one too, but it’s a crafting/diy channel😝it’s under my name krafty Kathy I’d love to see the video tho, if you make it

My husband and I are going to get chickens for the first time and are doing a ton of research and found you! Thank you for being the type of chicken owner that I hope to be! I've discovered different personalities that do not always sit well with me and you seem to actually care more about the chickens happiness BEFORE what they can do for you!

One thing I found with wood chip mulch (no additives) is that in winter months it gets really dusty in the run when we panel it up. Like a few mil layer of brown dust on everything.

Our local group's member had chickens die because they put a generator too close to the coop for the heater. That was quite tragic.

I agree with all your points in this video. I heat our coop (never hotter than 50 F) and it is insulated like a human house. Six hens produce 4-6 eggs a day in the worst of it because they are happy and thriving. When it is super cold (10F or lower, I don't let them out of the coop.

Higher body temps mean a bigger gap between ambient temps and their body which DOES mean they will feel colder than we feel.

My roosters dance for each other all the time! They are such bros. And they dance more and more the tighter the bonds grow. Did one sneeze? Another runs up to check on them and dances. Did two accidentally bump into each other?? Wing dance and bubbles as they prophetically apologize to each other for the inconvenience then to back to pecking around and making happy sounds. First time seeing each other in the morning? Dance party!! I don’t think I’ve seen a rooster dance in any negative scenario. I wonder if you may have been witnessing some fawning behavior? I have a rooster that fawns by bowing like a hen. He’s easily startled so I am very gentle around him. I can see a personality like his dancing to fawn as well. It could explain the interaction between your roosters with the chase and a dance from the losing roo at the end. Fawning in those challenges/confrontations is just another way to end them.

I've been really apprehensive about buying a saddle but I have a hen that has a balding head now. Do you reccommend anything I can put on it or should I leave it be? Its really cold here right now and I don't want her losing any more feathers off her head. Thank You!!

It is said that chickens can assign a name/sound to their favorite person. My buff Orpington is my favorite hen, and she makes a “bop-bop” sound for me when she comes toward me for snacks or loving. No one else has heard this, and she only does it for me. It seems to be the “name” she gave me.

Is this from a mineral/ vitamin deficiency? I know soy in chicken feed is an anti nutrient. It prevents the absorption of certain vitamins. Almost all feeds have soy.

I’m in the process of building a coop and am building roll away nesting boxes. I was planning on using a length of soft artificial grass so the eggs can roll. Would it make sense to add a little straw or raffia on top of that so they can toss it around?

To deny pecking order, as much has you love chickens, is only based on you wanting it to not exist. It exist for a very good reason, it part of the instinctual, survival of chickens and more importantly, the flock.

Hi, I watch and learn from your videos and I appreciate it and I also recently watched the video that where you dissected so I'm wanting to learn when something happens to one of my chickens open her up and see what went wrong so anyway I had a chicken about 2 weeks ago that limped and could not use one of her legs so I brought her in isolated her kept an eye on her so she wouldn't eat too much so I was hand feeding her and I thought she was getting better so I put her out with the outside next to the other chickens in a separate pin and she didn't move all day I brought her inside felt real good of her both legs so I can figure out what it feels like and it felt like her hip was broken or dislocated at the thigh but she died on her own that night and I've never heard of a chicken dying over a broken leg so I opened her up and I only took her skin off around her leg area and then I saw where the bone had been broken at the thigh area almost behind her wing so do you know what could have happened or have you run into this before I will say I did not cut her insides open but her meat her meat was so deep red after I took her skin off could that be a sign of internal bleeding
