The solder I used:
amzn.to/3g8nVvN
If you heat the wire with a direct flame, it will oxidize and will not bond to the solder. Dipping the wire into molten solder is much more effective. Once this is done your, steel wire cable will not come undone, unravel, or unwind. This solder stop will keep all the wire from fraying.

Silver solder and plumbing solder are different animals. Silver solder costing about 100x what plumbing solder cost.

I can't believe how cool videos like this are. I did this and it worked like a charm ( including the grinding down on the ends for a nice tapered feed into the channel I was trying to feed the cable into ). Well done!

Worked great for me on stainless cable. Used carb cleaner to remove oil residue left from when the cable was made. Then dipped the tip in phosphoric acid for ~30sec (found that worked better than flux or hydrochloric acid) then dipped in the hot silver solder.

Stainless steel bike cable. Cleaned with Acetone. Not much luck with the solder most likely due to wrong flux and perhaps need to try phosphoric acid flux. TIG worked great, but not helpful because it instantly shortens the cable; my application is a Rohloff hub cables where the length is predetermined and critical. JB weld applied last night and seems to work. Problem with Rohloff is you squish the cable end in the spool and this destroys the cable end integrity every time no matter what method you use.

This trick can also be used to keep the cables small after cutting so you can stick them in the crimping ferrules. It's impossible to fit cut braided cable in the ferrules if you don't do this trick.

We use a product called Black Max. It's an instant adhesive made by either 3M or Loctite that works well on smaller wire rope cables to keep them from fraying.

Instant adhesives if they are super glue types (cyanoacrylates) tend to solidify in the container rather quickly....I wonder what's the shelf life (once opened) of Black Max Loctite 380 you speak of? I might end up going the solder route simply because I've never seen solder or flux go bad in the storage.

Another fast and simple way to do it is to cut the cable using torches , I know not everyone has Oxygen & Acetylene torches, but you can use the welding tip, heat the cable cherry red, this will cut the cable and will not fray....
@maubunky1
@maubunky1 Жыл бұрын
Once it is cherry red, do you just pull it apart or pinch it with something? Or will it disintegrate apart on it's own? Thanks.

I tried to use your method however the solder would not stick to the cable. It just pooled up into a ball, but it would not solder onto the wire.

Hi guys. I was thinking of making a closed loop from the steel wire, to run over two pulleys continuously (like an endless belt). Any ideas how the two ends can be connected strongly enough and without a rigid joint..
@Discoworx
@Discoworx 6 ай бұрын
That's exactly why I started looking into this. I want to cross the cable over, too to change the direction of rotation of the driven roller. In an oven sub 200 degrees centigrade. Did you get yours joined?
@AB-lc8be
@AB-lc8be 6 ай бұрын
@@Discoworx nope nothing for steel cables, but luckily I found an alternate PP round belt for power transfer that can be seamlessly joined. I wanted round profile specifically because I wanna rotate it sideways too in the same loop. Since you don’t need round profile (or pulleys) you can look into shaft driven, or metal gears driven system. That should be fine in high temperatures. If you want to stick with cables, one clever out of the box solution can be to use a ratchet (or one way rotation) at driven pulley. And reverse cable direction before the joint. So the cable only transfers power. Use a direction control lever separately. So you can turn driven either way irrespective of driving pulley.
@Discoworx

@@AB-lc8be thanks but I'm going to practice a lap joint and/or sort of braid the strands of wire rope, use phosphoric acid as a flux and silver solder or lead. 🙏
