Canadian Tips (From a scout 8 years+): Wear at least three layers for your chest and legs. 1st layer is always going to be the layer that wicks away the moisture from your body(Such as underarmour or a neoprene base layer (MOISTER = VERY BAD). 2nd layer is for heat, such as a wool sweater, NEVER COTTON (Or a hoodie or shirt depending on the weather and how cold it is). Finally the third layer is to protect yourself from the elements, rain, snow, hail, etc (Ex. A well insulated ski jacket & pants). As for socks, I would go with 2 layers max, the moisture wicking layer, and the heat layer (wool, etc) (Then followed by a waterproof and breathable boot). If your clothing/socks are too tight, it WILL reduce the amount of heat. Just remember the acronym COLD: Clean clothes, Overheating, Layer clothing, stay Dry (mnemonic for surviving in cold weather). If anything gets damp, remove and change IMMEDIATELY (If you are winter camping, I would recommend changing your socks at least 5 times a day).In extreme cold situations, you want to cover most/all exposed skin. Say warm peeps :D (This is more suited towards colder temperatures below -20~ +, dress appropriately )

You dont always need a hot water bottle or heated blanket. I have a fluffy blanket just over my sheet and a thick comforter on top and it works very well. Sometimes my bed is a little cold when i get in it but it warms up very quickly because of my body heat and the blankets insolating the heat. Yes, it is dull black, which would absorb heat, but it wouldn't absorb much heat because it's a thin layer of elasticated nylon, which would also wear out due to repeated abrasion between the door and the floor, depending on the gap. This would be an issue especially if you had a shag-pile carpet.

Story time: I live in Canada and this happened a few weeks ago. Just before lunch, the fire drill rang and we had to evacuate. We didn’t grab our jackets or anything because we were in Music class. At first, I thought it was just a drill but then 3 fire trucks came and went back. We waited there for 15 minutes and it was so cold. dave, here is a great trick to stay warm when it's cold silk under garments! the way it is explained, it will wisk the moisture from your body I buy mine though a company Lands End have it delivered even try the silk glove liners and sock liners and you can double up on everything you will not believe how you will be able to take on the winter!

You can heat a tied-off pair of white tube or over-the-calf socks (with uncooked rice in them) in the microwave and place one in each of your shoes prior to putting them on. That'll heat your shoes up and make them nice and toasty before you have to put them on and go out in the cold. Don't fill the sock completely. Leave room so that the rice can move around freely. Also, if you have to get out into a cold car on a frosty morning, make a plate-sized double denim bag, fill it nearly full with rice and sew it shut (remember to leave enough room for the rice to move freely) and then heat it on a plate in the microwave for about 2 minutes or so. When it's nice and toasty but not too hot to the touch, place it on your car seat and cover it with an old towel or dishcloth to use it as a seat warmer. Or you can just tuck it up under your shirt, jacket or coat for a lap warmer. It really does help a LOT. While you're waiting for the car to thaw, place your hands on the top side of the rice bag to keep them warm as well.

I got a hack for you guys to. You can use a blow drier to heat up your clothes before you change. You do have to be quick tho. But it’s an amazing feeling. With socks however you need to be careful if they are thin or made out is certain materials. Blow drying them for too long can dry it out and leave crunchy spots in the sock. (Learned from experience.)
