I've just been hearing about that mold doesn't survive if it's too acidic or alkaline. I think that why the vinegar works since it's an acid. Bases are supposed to work really good too. Something alkaline like borax or lime.

I discovered black mold in my house, lots of it, and I'm horrified and overwhelmed. Black mod on walls, spreading at a fast pace, and I just noticed some wooden pieces of furniture have a layer on top that I assumed might be dust but turns out it's mold. I can smell mold in the air. I think it may be why I've become sick, notably since the entire roof of the house was replaced by not very professional people (unfortunately I didn't have a say in it). I really need to find a solution fast and the strength to do whatever needs to be done. This thing caught me at a time when I'm quite debilitated, I don't have parents or family that might help... On my own here.

@@ThatADUGuy thank you!! Could you please tell from your experience how long does it take for the smell of vinegar to dissipate? For reference the surfaces to be sprayed are concrete walls and I was going to use a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water (unless you recommend I use pure vinegar. One of the rooms is my bedroom, so I was wondering how long until the smell of vinegar goes away, so I can sleep there again.

@yikes7607 vinegar doesn't work well to be honest nothing does other than harsh chemicals and most harsh chemicals cant penetrate wood, most of mold is invisible under the surface and honestly won't go away unless you replace everything that's effected, vinegar stinks for the longest time, I tried it on a wooden floor and could smell it weeks after and the mold just returned worse once the vinegar smell started to subside, vinegar is only effective on some molds anyway some molds are highly resistant to common household treatments and they grow incredibly fast, I would try and move home if you can if its a rental as you will be constantly battling with it🤷‍♂️

@@KrisRoberts114 thanks! This is so disheartening, I'm really poor and the idea of losing my furniture is sad especially because a good part of it has sentimental value. I did try to save a table that belonged to my great grandmother, I practically doused it in cleaning vinegar and left it to dry before I apply it a second time later for good measure... But like you said the smell seems very persistent and as for the mold I am unsure if it's still active inside the wood. I will see if I can salvage it and if a coat of varnish helps. My concern is also the walls. They're concrete and show cracks, a 70 year old house. Been looking into professionals and something called an "impermeabilization" service (don't know the name in English) that includes cleaning the mold and fixing structural issues and insulation but it's so expensive... A few thousands of Euros. This mold "surprise" really threw me off, I can say 2024 started with a bang :(

@@yikes7607 I bought a second hand "lazy boy" couch from a local charity shop that once delivered had visible mold on the bottom, I wanted a new one but my mum bless her encouraged me to get a better quality second hand one for cheaper, I relented and bought a second hand one and after seeing the mold figured I could clean it off which I did but noticed a few days later my chest was playing up so I phoned the local council and booked them to remove it as it was large and they said five weeks wait, the lady told me to stick it in the front garden in the meantime which was no good as I have an elderly neighbour upstairs who spends her days giving me trouble and she pays people to look after the garden, so I kept it indoors for the five weeks and it destroyed the place, I got rid of it then about a week later could smell something that was irritating my nostrels and I was coughing like crazy so I had to remove the carpets which I then replaced and it came back 2 days later so I then threw the brand new carpet away and rented large sanders and sanded the wooden flooring then used thick varnish on the floor which has helped a great deal but my second couch was in the room before I sanded the flooring and seemed fine but has also been contaminated so I'm now busy trying to find a brand new one I can afford, it's a shame its a lovely settee and my brother gave me it but I've tried cleaning it with bleach left on for an hour then an upholstery cleaner (like a hoover with water and soap) but it just made it worse so it's getting thrown away, one thing I found that works great is uvc lights, they're dangerous though but very effective, they give off a light blue light that kills mold and they also turn the air to ozone which gets into everything and kills absolutely every little thing, you can't look at the light when you switch it on and you have to vacate whatever room you're doing it in for about 3hrs (longer the better really) then air the place out but it works great, they do a cheap one on amazon I think it's about 150w might be a bit smaller, but they work great or you can get a mercury vapor bulb 500w and smash the outside glass off and use that with the correct power source such as a ballist matching the wattage, there's a russian guy has a video on how to do it on KZbin, I'll find the video and tell you what it's called, but yeah I had a settee in my old place that I noticed had mold one day and I simply got rid of it and had no more issues but that was a common green mold this one I suspect is aspergillus fumigatus which apparently is an absolute nightmare and it's honestly made me very unwell, my diet is strictly veg and chicken no sugar red meat or eggs can't even drink tea or coffee and I've had a bad cough for over a year, but I'm getting closer to it being sorted, my mum says I should move but I feel too guilty about someone unsuspecting moving in after me and going through what I've been through, its been really bad and I'm sorry to hear you have items with sentimental value involved I'm personally very minimalistic the only things I have are the settee some wooden cabinets and a large coffee table (I also have a classic motorbike parked in my living room😆) and some old clothing that's got be replaced after it's sorted, but yeah bleach for hard surfaces and possibly diluted bleach for varnished wooden furniture and some textiles you don't mind risking discolouring but the best thing I've found is the uvc light it kills it in the air and any hard surface the light can reach, I hope its not to bad for you and you manage to atleast make things comfortable ill find the name of the guy let you know👍

So my wife and I were given a house. And the house right now because of a live oak tree. Hanging over the roof. Has more a hole in the roof. A large one. So now we’re in the process of getting the house got it. Now there are a couple of spots in this house that we are concerned of water damage, and therefore mode. Would you suggest using the vinegar to kill the mold on that scale? And if so, would it be OK once we put the vinegar on it to possibly sell it in with maybe a paint or primer? We’re referring to the studs of the house.
