Ross Carpenter excellent advice! I actually do the same thing here, I shop domyown.com a lot and they have some articles on the same topic with a lot of good advice. Same as herbicides, I try to mix things up and selectively spray only the areas that need it. Plants can build up a resistance just like pests can. Chemical rotation. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I won’t sugar coat it I can be a bit lax on ppe from time to time especially when it’s 85 degrees out 😆 no excuse though. Like I’ve said in other comments I like to take a shower when I’m done spraying and I scrub my skin down really good and put on fresh clothes after I’m done spraying. So hopefully that helps rinse it off my skin so it’s not sitting for too long. You should see some of the supposed “professional” spray companies around here they are a buncha cowboys sometimes the house across the street the company that sprays he literally just wears rubber boots no gloves, t-shirt, that’s about it lol considering he’s exposed to this 5 days a week I’d say I would definitely be taking PPE a LOT more seriously if I was exposed to the stuff more frequently than once every 30 days 😆. I'm in Puerto Rico doing volunteer work. Omg I have like 30 bites from mosquitos and gnats. I bought OFF which is the mosquito tick and bug repellent. Smells horrible. I'm doing a huge clean up yard work. I'm definitely going to try this once I'm done with the clean up. I'll keep you posted. THANK YOU so much for your video. I appreciate the time you took to make your video with excellent explanation. Blessings :)

Glad you found this video useful! Keep in mind the products I use are NOT designed for skin contact like OFF and others are. These are for preventing bugs from coming into an area in the first place. You can also spray this stuff along foundations, in basements, around windows and doors, cracks and crevices to help provide a barrier to bugs coming inside a dwelling. So it does a lot more than just mosquito control as well which is nice. As for OFF, which uses Deet as the ingredient, is totally safe for skin. Try the cutter brand I find it’s less oily and smelly than the OFF brand. The 25% deet should work well. Good luck in Puerto Rico! Sounds like a very rewarding experience. Thanks for watching!

Hi, I sprayed my yard and house all over with bifen.... I sprayed the patio light right outside my door..... so far so good with mosquitos and keeping bugs out, but tonight, 6 days after spraying (no rain for 48 hours after I sprayed) when I was out at night with patio light on, the flies were BAD right at the light... swarming the light.... I sprayed the light and surrounding part of the house by the light... this was the 1st time since I sprayed that I went outside with patio light on..... will the flies that kept hitting the light eventually die off from the residual of the bifen it (7.9%) or is bifen just not effective for flies that are attracted to the light?
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I never thought to actually spray the light they are attracted to. But you’re right, you’ll definitely get flies and bugs attracted to lights regardless. If they land on the light and come into contact with the Bifenthrin it could kill them off probably. As long as the heat doesn’t burn off the Bifen. I honestly don’t know if the light would generate too much heat to render it ineffective or not. Interesting. Spraying your entire yard or back yard where you hang out most can definitely decrease their numbers but you’ll still get flies especially with lights on. I try to leave the lights out and that always helps lol. But yeah I bet it would probably help decrease their numbers if you spray the light. Doesn’t hurt I guess!

Pest control Technician here! Nothing stops attractants such as light from attracting pests but you could make sure that they die if they touch the thing attracting them if it’s treated with a pesticide. A better way from stopping insects from being attracted to light is to change out your light bulb with what is called an “insect light bulb” it uses a yellow frequency of light that does not attract as many species of insects. Hope that helps!

I didn't know you had to shake the stuff vigorously. Can you mix it with a little bit of dish soap to try and slow down the settling ?
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if that would work as an emulsifier, dish soap is usually used as a surfactant, allowing something to better adhere to the surface, so a few drops of dish soap might work well during application to stick to the surface of tree leaves and shrubs, however I probably wouldn't try to add it to the concentrate, I don't believe that is recommended anywhere on the label and I'm not sure if that would affect anything. You just have to shake it because it begins to separate. A large full new bottle like this I shook like crazy, but now that its about half full now a couple years after I made this video I just give it a quick shake and its all good.

Nice! Glad to hear that it worked so well for you! Yes this stuff will target a wide array of insects and arachnids i would be careful to not apply to anything you don’t want to harm bees. My friend has honey bees and he doesn’t go anywhere near them with this stuff. I would be careful with overspray and maybe only use this is a perimeter control around the foundation of your house if you’re going to use it if you farm honey or anything like that. I like to go to this website and check the list of insects it will work on they also have the entire label with instructions on application methods and application area you can check out here. They might even have something on their website that is bee friendly. www.domyown.com/bifen-it-p-226.html#!specs reach out to their customer service if you want something that’s bee safe they might be able to help out. Depends on the type of grass you have the amount you apply varies a bit. The spectracide herbicide is usually 4-6 ounces per gallon for northern cook season type grasses. Tenacity is anywhere from 2 teaspoons per gallon up to 5 teaspoons per gallon depending on if you’re applying to a specific grass type or if you’re targeting a specific type of weed. Do you have to reapply if it rains
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 4 жыл бұрын
Victor O just as long as the application is totally dry before it rains it should be okay. They recommend 1-2 hours dry time before re-entering the area as well. But if you can apply it a full 24 hours before rain is in the forecast you will get maximum efficacy out of it. Otherwise yes some of it will go into the soil. Soil applications are more for grub control so this product still works even after its watered in, just not as effective against mosquitoes that land on the surface of leaves if that makes sense. But you shouldn’t have to reapply more than every 30 days unless you get a lot of daily torrential rain. In that case you might wan to reapply every two weeks I think that would be safe. But if you apply Bifenthrin on a regular basis just remember that you need to do some sort of insecticide rotation so the insects are not building up a resistance to it. So rotating every other application with another type of product is a best practice. Hope that helps!

This will repel pollinators like bees and such, I haven't had had too large of a bee population in this entire town to be honest so it's not a huge concern where I live, however you can also be a little more selective with where you spray this and skip over plants you care about. Just spray in your most common outdoor living areas like around decks and patios and a good 3 foot radius around those areas and that alone will be a HUGE improvement with mosquitoes just with that.

Hey, I bought bifen i/t and cutter.... I have a deck in backyard... do you recommend spraying deck down too for mosquito control or only grass areas and bushes/ shrubs? Also do you recommend mixing cutter with the bifen in my chemical sprayer or only use bifen alone in the sprayer at its recommended dose? Thankyou
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I spray the deck too, under the overhangs on the house, and even spray a perimeter around the house. Bifen targets more pests than just mosquitoes so it’s a good perimeter pest control application as well for ants, spiders, and other stuff too. The cutter probably has a different active ingredient. Look in the bottom corner of the bottle and see what the ingredients are. What you could do is apply them alternating every 30 days so you don’t build up a resistance to one of the chemicals. Chemical rotation is important. So every couple months or every other month I would rotate anyway. So that’s a good thing that you have the two products. So don’t apply them at the same time just wait 30 days and switch to the other one. Hope that helps!

Are you familiar with defense sc or suspense sc? I use it around / outside the house - ARound the foundations to rid bugs, ants, silverfish and etc... will this product, the bifen help with Insects for your home or is Bifen just to treat mosquitoes? Great video!! New subscriber.
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 3 жыл бұрын
Defense SC and Suspense SC are both great products, different modes of application. In fact, I believe those can also be used for mosquito control. Defense SC is deltamethrin. Suspend SC is the same ingredient as well just a different brand. I would actually alternate which product you use, as bugs can build up a tolerance to chemicals if used for extended periods of time. So maybe spray one type for a couple of months, then rotate to Bifenthrin for a couple months, and rotate back again. Same thing when using a fungicide on the lawn, lawn fungus can develop a resistance to chemical treatment when used repeatedly. So since you already have the other products, just use both. Just check the label and make sure you are applying at the suggested intervals. Hope that helps answer your question! Thanks for watching!

It's also a good idea to rotate pesticide use every few months so you aren't applying the exact same active ingredients every month so the insects don't build up a tolerance.

@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 4 жыл бұрын
So I did just check the label again and they recommend anywhere from .33 ounces to 1 ounce of bifin I/T to 127 ounces of water for crack and crevice and surface treatments. The number you are referring to is for termite mitigation and soil drenching and/or drenching soil around foundation both post and pre construction they recommend mixing 1 ounce to 4 gallons of water in a bucket per 10 linear feet per foot of depth of the trench, or 1 gallon per 1 cubic feet of soil. Page 11 and 12 of the pdf available on domyown.com. The usage rate I was looking at is a table on page 14 of the instructions. They also have a usage rate double that of 0.12% final mixed rate using 2 ounces of bifin to 1 gallon of water. The usage scenario I cover in the video is covered on page 27 of the pdf under "General surface application" usage rate of .33 to 1.0 fl oz per gallon of water.

@@DIYDad1 I guess you're right. Usually I don't see that kind of volume unless it's for indoor treatments. Talstar is the same way must be a bifenthrin thing. Might want to look into Cyzmic. It will go a lot further, and it's basically just a synthetic pyrethroid like Bifen is. These are the mixes for Cyzmic: 0.2 fl. oz. (6 mL)/gal. of water - 0.015% - light infestations, maintenance, general pest prevention 0.4 fl. oz. (12 mL)/gal. of water - 0.03% - most indoor applications, turf and ornamental pests 0.8 fl. oz. (24 mL)/gal. of water - 0.06% - Severe infestations, clean-out, tough pests like roaches, scorpions 1.5 - 5.0 fl. oz. per 100 gal. of water for Ornamental Pest applications 3.4-7 mL per 1,000 sq. ft. (5 - 10 fl. oz. per Acre) for Lawn and Turfgrass Pest applications
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 4 жыл бұрын
SheepAmongGoats yeah cyzmic is definitely a good one as well. I use it indoors because a little goes a long way but it’s more expensive. I stick with bifenthrin outdoors around the lawn for mosquitoes I usually only do 2-3 applications a year of the bifenthrin and then rotate a few other things later on in the year. Luckily we don’t get many bugs in the winter time because of the snow so the chances of insect resistance is lower overall just due to the low volumes I only spray 5-6 months a year for this area. Further south rotation of pesticides becomes much bigger importance that’s for sure. Thanks for the feedback! I could go way deeper in explaining this but then the video gets insanely long 😁

@@joe3055 yes that’s a good point. There’s a couple of flower bushes that I don’t spray this on for that reason, but generally we don’t really have a huge honey bee population around here, not unless you go a couple miles down the road to the more heavily wooded areas, so for me I’m concerned with wasps that make it very unpleasant to be in the backyard for the kids so I spray where we hang out a lot. My friend who has bee hives a few miles down the road he doesn’t use chemicals like this for obvious reasons, because he’s farming honey.

Jordan Sorrick at the rate I spray at, I usually re-apply every 30 days but depending on what target pests you are going after and if you follow a different usage rate on the bottle it can go up to 60 days between applications. I only spray this during the summer months so if you live somewhere warm that you need pest control year round it’s typically recommended to rotate between different kinds of insecticide so the bugs don’t build up a resistance to any single type that you are spraying. @@Ricebow11 I have it figured out pretty close with how much mix I need to make to cover my front and back yard, it takes a little bit of practice with the sprayer to know how fast to walk and how much to spray over a given area. Typically these sprayers are calibrated for 1 gallon per 1,000 square feet. I have a video on how to use a sprayer properly check that video out it might help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWaXkK2ui9Cbpdk How large of a yard do you have? I would recommend starting at 1 gallon mix per 1,000 sq ft just as a general rule for a starting point. You can mix each gallon 1/2 ounce or up to an ounce per gallon of water. If there's a significant amount of product left over after spraying you can empty it into a sealed container (just make sure it's properly labeled so you don't forget what it is!) and it should be good until you have to apply 30 days later and you can re-use it. If it's just a little bit left over I usually dump it into my flower beds in the mulch right along the foundation of my house since I keep a barrier application around my house as well, so you can do a band spray around your foundation as well.

I just do my back yard and around the front door and garage area where people spend the most time in the yard. You definitely could do the entire yard if you have a significant mosquito population or you really want to knock out as many mosquitos as possible. I just like to spray the most common areas where people spend the most time. We really only have bad mosquitoes for a couple months a year so I’ll typically spray June through august typically where I live here in the Midwest. But if you’re having a mosquito problem year round I’d also recommend rotating pesticides every couple of months so they bugs don’t build up a resistance to the chemicals. So Bif IT doesn't have a lot of fast knock-down power for an immediate kill unless you mix with another ingredient as a "kicker" but just alone it will kill them off as well as provide a barrier that when bugs cross that barrier or touch it they carry it off and it will kill the mosquitoes. According to the website, Bifen IT is a synthetic pyrethroid that works by disrupting an insect's nervous system causing a weakened state followed by death. It is a repellent as well since it acts quickly enough that social insects such as ants cannot create a pheromone trail. Obviously, we care more about getting bitten than we do about the number we kill. That's why the DYI traps with, say, alka-seltzer, don't work. Sure, they kill lots, but not enough to influence the number of bites you get. Have you personally witnessed a "before and after" with Bifen? So I’m excited to try a new product out this year. Bifenthrin totally helps with mosquitoes. If I let it go too long it gets really bad. Usually the first application I do right around now, since it’s still pretty cold out until June but the bugs are just starting to come out now so I’ll be spraying again soon for the first time this season. I’d say I usually notice a pretty big drop off of mosquitoes really fast, usually within the first 24 - 48 hours or so after application. If you have a really bad infestation you could try an insect growth regulator (IGR) which helps lower the future generations of mosquitoes and lowers the population over time. Just as long as you are rotating pesticides every few months or they tend to build up a tolerance to them over time. So I usually say if you’re applying 12 months out of the year in a warmer climate just rotate every month or two so they don’t lose efficacy. Anyway, hope that answers your questions. Don’t hesitate to reach out! Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@dontwanttojoingoogle1799 I have a new application method I’m going to be testing out soon. Had a company reach out to send me a fogger for testing. I’ll probably try and get that video posted in the next couple of weeks, I’ve never used a fogger before. But I’m looking forward to trying it! Should work great for getting into the trees and shrubs.

Do as I say not as I do lol. Yeah i know. I wear protective disposable gloves, long pants and shoes when I spray. I'm also conscience of wind direction so I dont get drift in my face. I figure, glasses and gloves at a bare minimum. I always wash my hands, arms, and face with soap when I'm done. Either way, I try not to bathe myself in it :P thanks for watching!

jeffreylc LOL right? I mean, it’s not like I’m bathing myself in it. Depends on what you are spraying and what the label tells you for protection. Sometimes gloves are just fine and I still wash my hands and face afterwards just in case something drifted into me. I’m not wearing a full suit when it’s 90 degrees out 😰

Lorna Woessner oh did I have windows open I couldn’t tell lol. I did this video last year I can’t remember haha! If it gets on the window screens not a big deal just as long as it doesn’t land on anything in the house that I’ll eat 😜 but good point nonetheless.

If I remember I think the windows themselves were closed but several of the older windows have a second outer storm window that can be closed and I think those were what you saw were open, can’t remember when I made this video it’s entirely possible there was a window open lol. But that’s definitely good advice don’t want any overspray getting inside. Although it wouldn’t be too bad, this stuff is generally pretty safe and the label says it’s good for indoors in cracks and crevices so around window frames would be totally fine to help treat and prevent bugs from entering your house as well. I usually spray a perimeter around the windows and doors and foundation every 2 months or so.

Yep absolutely, follow the ppe recommendations in all products that you use, do as I say not as I do lol. When it’s hot I cheat sometimes but yeah no excuse lol. This stuff I believe they recommend gloves, long pants and long sleeves. Mask is only required when spraying interior applications in an enclosed space according to the instructions. I usually shower after I’m done with an application like this just to wash any overspray off my skin. www.domyown.com/msds/Bifen_IT_Label1.pdf

Yeah but what about all the wonderful insects you might be killing as well! What about bees and lady bugs. Does this kill them too? I love lizards and hummingbirds! They are big insect eaters, so if the bugs are sprayed with poison, then the beautiful ones die too!! Earthworms are also so important and will be killed if chemicals leach into the soil and of course eventually getting into the water. Spiders are predators who also eat the bad bugs. Highly intelligent and less than 30%, 10% of 1/10 have caused harm or death to humans, yet people are so deathly afraid of spiders. Predators come in small numbers where their prey are large in numbers. Few lions. Lots of gazelle or zebra or wildebeest, etc... Same with spiders. So predators are the important ones and shouldn't ever be destroyed because of there not being many to begin with. Spiders play a huge part in keeping the bug world in balance. Instead of killing them and making a disgusting mess on your shoe, grab a cup and place over the spider then gently slide a piece of paper, preferably paper that's thicker like a to go menu or a postcard, under the cup. Do it slow, so you don't hurt the legs and so it can have a chance to get on the paper. Put your hand under the paper as you're holding it flush to the cup. Keep hand flat keeping the cup covered. Take outside and toss under a bush or tree. Literally takes 2 minutes and so easy. Nature needs our help and protection which takes very little effort to do. Bees should never be harmed also or their hives destroyed. Ever. They are responsible for all vegetation and it's a myth that they're dangerous!! They won't hurt you unless you hurt them!! They have to protect themselves and their home just like anyone of us would. Respect them and all of nature and let them beeee. LoL. They deserve our consideration and concern. Insect sprays are so toxic and dangerous to everything. There are hundreds of simple solutions that can illiminate nasty pests just as easily as with deadly chemicals. That's why I so appreciate people who take the time like you guys to make their own combinations with natural and safer ingredients. You guys are the ones who are helping nature to have a healthier life so we can too. It's safer to go down the drain. Safer to breath and better for the environment. Put honey or syrup away from the house. Ants will take off for the sticky down the way. If you have a mouse in the house, look up a diy live mouse trap. It's just as easy as the alternative, except you toss away down the block or alley instead of in the trash. If you have aphids populating your favorite plants, get some ladybugs to take charge. They are natural aphid destroyers. Plus, they're good luck especially if they grace you with their presence and are just so cute to look at. Bees and ladybugs are on the decline as well as many other wonderful creatures, so we need to be careful and put a stop to chemicals. Thank you and for practicing greener and healthier living.

I agree with your sentiments, I only apply as needed and I like to do integrated pest management, which only targets specific pests that are a problem. I wish I had lizards here, I've only seen those in FL! But we do have a ton of hummingbirds, my wife loves them. We have probably 4 or 5 bird feeders, in fact our town is known as the bird capital of the state :D it's nice to have lots of wildlife here. Luckily at the lower application rates that I use these chemicals it hasn't harmed the earth worm population either, every time it rains I see tons of them popping up in the lawn and on the driveway, it's nice for healthy and balanced soil structure. I didn't dive into the details too much in this video for the sake of keeping the time down, but having proper insecticide application practices, pesticide rotation, and proper targeting, as well as treating the actual SOURCE of the problem are all paramount to proper treatment of pests in the lawn. The only reason I treat for mosquitoes here is because around here where I live they have very few natural predators that eat them so we have extremely high population of mosquitoes, and I'm mostly concerned about the health of my kids and dogs in the back yard, so treating mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas, I don't have to use tick and flea treatment with the dogs either which is nice. It helps prevent the spread of zika and other mosquito-borne illness, so like everything in life it's a balance that has to be taken into consideration. No need to go scorched earth or the nuclear option! Thanks for your thoughts.

Robert Craig I never claimed I’m a professional but thanks for the concern! Funny enough though my neighbor pays a company to spray their lawn and the guy who does it wears shorts and a cut off sleeve shirt when he does this. And he was using one of the backpack foggers! Arguably I wear more ppe than some of the so called “pros” wear 😁. But truth be told, the label for this stuff changes the ppe based on the application site for example indoors it’s different. I wear glasses too so that helps protect my eyes. Also I usually shower right after an application so anything that gets on my skin is washed off immediately after. If I’m going to be spraying yards all day long I’d for sure be wearing long sleeves and pants though and several changes of clothes throughout the day.
