The number refers to the amount of pins on the machine - I would say 48 for larger pieces like that as you can work more stitches

You can make lots of things :) I've made hats, tops and sweaters so far and next I plan on making a scarf! I have another knitting machine tutorial on how to make panels, which may help you with other projects

Ah that's happened to me a couple of times! It's very tricky to sort out :/ you'll have to pick up the stitches and loop them back onto the pins - maybe I can make a tutorial on this at some point!
