How to Knit a sock without Turning a Heel by ARNE & CARLOS

In this week's episode, we take a look at how to knit a sock without heel. The sock design that we have come up with is called a "Spiral Sock" in Norway. It's a fun sock to knit and the diagonal spiral design ensures a perfect fit on the foot and heel. Just knit the desired length and that's pretty much it! It's super easy!!
You will find the full pattern for the sock by visiting our online shop at www.arnecarlos.com

Google tells me that women were encouraged to knit spiral socks for soldiers in World War I. The heel of a sock has a tendency to wear out before the rest of it, but in spiral socks this can be prevented by placing the heel of your foot in a different part of the sock each time you wear them.

Fantastic thank you!! I was raised in Alaska where the culture is no shoes inside (due to the horrific amount of snow/mud/slush). I very much want to return my tiny home to the no-shoes rule, my floors will stay so much cleaner. Providing some one-size-fits-all socks for guests will help so much. 🙏🏻

I love these socks!! Well done! Patons Canada had a free pattern called Spiral Bed Socks many, many years ago. It also used a four row repeat but didn't shift stitches from the end of the round to the beginning of the next. If anyone finds that difficult to understand, simply work in pattern. Rounds 1-4: K4, P4 to end of row. Rounds 5-8: P1, (K4, P4) to the end of the round, ending with a P3. In the next rounds, begin with one more P stitch at the beginning of the round. Eventually, your rounds will begin with a K st. By then, the pattern is clearly seen. My sister-in-law loved the ones I made for her and repeatedly asked for more. Unfortunately, the pattern sheet has been lost by me. Happy knitting!!

I've done spiral socks a bit differently -- five knit, one purl, odd number of stitches, and it forms a nice design and a spiral sock. It's a great concept. Much simpler than it looks.

Using a very similar method but from the cuff down, is how I started knitting socks about 25 years ago. I knitted a dozen or more pairs for my son when he went away to college. He said they were "chick magnets!" Even though I usually knit A&C's other patterns now, I recently finished a pair of spiral socks for another grown son who wanted thick socks. I knitted them from worsted-weight wool yarn that was half superwash and half nylon or acrylic. My son loves them and wears them almost every day. They are holding up fine.

I would love to see Regia put up bigger skeins of your kids colours, I have been making your teddy bears recently (which are brilliant), and I think your colourways are fantastic! I didn't notice Freja on the sofa until she barked, which in turn gave my dog the idea to bark as well! Love to all three of you from Boston, MA.

Great lesson! I want to try and knit my husband a pair of socks with no heels. My grandmother use to knit them, but she called them bed socks. They were probably bed socks because she knit all the same size socks. She knit until she died at 98, so I didn’t complain about the size. We still have some of her socks which we wear in our rain boots. Thanks Freya for helping me train my puppy. Kai likes to watch TV and she barks at the other dogs and animals. I have been teaching her not to bark and you helped me. She got a treat every time she did not react to you or your barking. Kai and I will be watching all your videos - They will teach me so much and train Kai not to react to animals on TV.

This is such a fortuitous video for me! I've come up to my brother-in-law in my christmas knitting sock list and his feet are HUGE and I've been trying to figure out how best to do his socks. I think spiral socks will be absolutely PERFECT for those giant feet of his (one of his feet are the size of both of mine heel to toe) and will give him a great fit without me freaking out about where to put the heel in :D

Your needles make me smile! The tips are shaped just like the skis my father had in the late’30s and early ‘40s. As a child, he lived north of Mt Washington in New Hampshirite, and we used to joke he was born on skis. For some reason, he sawed the decorative tips off, and we were very upset with him!

A really fun video. I love knitting regular top down socks as I haven’t yet tried a toe up sock but these do look fun. I don’t have problems knitting socks so not sure if I’ll try these or not. But the two of you make this sock look so fun so who knows, I may try them in the future. But the best part of watching this video is learning about the mountains and fjords yarn by Regia. I love the colors and will look for that yarn next time. I’m making “rainbow” socks right now for my grandsons out of OnLine Linie 12 which are knitting up beautifully but will look at the kids colors of Regia also since one grandson loves green and one loves red! I would love to see the kid colors in skeins for adult socks. Just because they are all grown up doesn’t mean their tastes and wants change. My kids still love bright colorful hand knit socks for Christmas. It’s always our family picture.

Thank you for the new pattern. I must purchase it! I would love to see Regia have colours that match in both kids and adults in the perfect pair yarn. I just finished a pair for my son and his 2 year old. I tried to make them identical, now I have quite a bit left over from my grandson’s ball. Now what can I knit with the left over yarn, haha. Thank you, you guys are great at. 🧶🧶🇨🇦
