Agree! This is very nice! Consider checking Portuguese style as well... My mom suffers of fibromyalgia, arthritis and arthrosis... I witnessed first hand how painful it can be. I like mixing styles when I'm bored of one repetitive motion... The important thing is to feel good and enjoying knitting🥰❤️ ...with the Portuguese style purl stitch you just have to flick your thump...

I started learning Norwegian style so I can keep knitting. Last night I was struggling and feeling foolish and as I was concentrating I started seeing red which is not my yarn colors or needle and was confusing. When I focused I realized my arthritis was flaring up and I didn’t even notice! That gave me the confidence that I am on the correct path for Norwegian style knitting!

This is so great to me. I am an American who learned to knit as an exchange student in Larvik, in 1981/82. Within two weeks of arriving I had knitting needles in hand and was told “ You will be the best knitter in the world because Norwegians are the best knitters in the world and we will teach you to knit our way.” True that!! I have been knitting ever since and everyone I meet and knit with are impressed at how fast and easily I knit. Thank You to every Norwegian knitter!!! Your country gave me my lifetime dearest skill!

Oh my goodness!!! I am 71 and have been knitting since age 7. I’ve been knitting “English” or with the throwing method. It takes so much longer than your Norwegian method. I am proud to say that I believe I have mastered Norwegian! I still have a bit of trouble with tension, but it’s only been a few hours. I am so excited! Thank you so much for your tutorials! You have revitalized this old girl’s knitting! I had a lovely Norwegian uncle named Henry Kallestad. I adored him, but unfortunately he died as a very young man when I was about 5 years old. In Denmark as well 😊 Maybe a more correct term would be ‘the Nordic purl’? In the old days, sheepherders would knit socks (for selling), while wandering and following their flock, the yarn ball hanging from a belt... A firm grip and a technique that allowed the knitters to keep their eyes more on the sheep than on their hands (and minding their steps) must have been essential, right? These techniques are the same that now allow knitters to easily follow our favourite series on tv while knitting without looking down (much) 😂 Happy ‘nordic’ purling, everyone 🧶 👀

Thanks guys. I’m now a full Norwegian convert. I immediately took to the Norwegian knit stitch but found the purl tricky at first. Having built up some more knitting experience I revisited this video as I’m currently doing a shawl that has lots of purls and my purl method was just not comfortable for me. This time it clicked! The Norwegian purl gives so much more control, better tension and is comfortable and relaxed - I love it! Cha Cha Cha! 🕺

I have just started knitting about a month ago and tried out both this method and the ‘regular’ one with the index finger in front of the left needle, and this one I find MUCH easier. I find it very complicated to have to move the thread across the needle every time you purl. I like the way you demonstrate it in the video. Very easy to follow for new knitters I think! I don’t know about the origin of this knitting style. I’m from Denmark and was thought this method by my mom and a couple of danish youtubers. But my sister in law is from Norway and she is knitting with the finger in front of the needle. So I don’t know… But I would say, choose the method you find to be the easiest 😊 For me, this is definitely it.

I’ve always knitted the American way by “throwing” the yarn and after watching you for a bit, I was intrigued by the Norwegian knit and pearl and wanted to learn it. It was helpful to watch both Arne and Carlos - at first Carlos was the most helpful by showing the exact placement of the needle at each step. I could make the correct moves, but it felt so awkward. Then I watched Arne’s video from 2017 and realized there is a easy flow ( the DANCE!) that I needed to master! That helped so much. But I still didn’t have it... I then watched Carlos again and realized that in the Norwegian way of purling the needle moves dramatically down, then behind to grab the yarn off the finger and then , at the third CHA it goes upward. This was the key for me because in the way I have always knitted, the needles stay in the same basic place (and at the same angle to one another)and it is the hands that do all the moving. Does that make sense? For me that was the key. I am sure I couldn’t have learned it without you both! You two are a great team in so many ways. A wonderful example of how to collaborate in work and play and life.. this is such a soothing thing to see in these crazy times. Thanks for all!:)

Having purled like this over half a century already, I want to give you all an insight on this method. As you keep practicing it, you'll find out how your stitches on your left needle move towards the tip of the needle and the movement of the right hand makes is shortened! That is the gate to fast purling and less arthritis!

I have never seen a danish knitter throwing the yarn. Maybe this is actually the ‘scandinavian purl’? My guess is that this way of knitting goes back to the olden days when sheepherders were knitting socks for selling, while herding the flock Men, women and children were knitting -even on the move and therefore had to have a tight grip on their work, so not to loose their needles. When throwing you often have to let go of one of the needles to throw the 🧶 🙂

My mind was blown that I can hold the yarn in my left hand. It feels much more natural as a crocheter. But, I was having trouble with figuring out how to purl. Thank you! I liked when you said "Movement number one. " "Movement number two." "Movement number three." I did like your way of showing although I would have liked to see you demonstrate that several more times... "Movement number one. " "Movement number two." "Movement number three."

After 60 yrs of knitting English style, I'm learning and loving the challenge of your Norwegian method! The scarf I'm knitting for my husband is a slow go at the moment, but I'm in no hurry. I'm already referring to it as his Norwegian scarf (he's Swedish, ha!). Next I'll try your Norwegian Waffles. You two are so talented. Thank you for sharing your gifts.

Thank you! I’m glad to hear it helps arthritis and sore wrists and fingers! I’ve been knitting for 65 years, and age has caught up with my hands. 😜

I am a beginner knitter who started and struggled with continental knitting. After watching your videos on Norwegian knit and purl, knitting becomes so much easier and fun! My index finger and pinky feel no more pain and the purl is really a JOY to do! Thank you soooooo much for the tutorial!

Thank you for showing this method. I never could knit or crochet with my finger up and therefor I couldn’t knit the continental way. So I am glad that you showed how to knit this way. It resembles my way of holding the tread as if I am crocheting. Because this method makes my stitches much looser than when I knit the English way, and I am in the middle of a sock knitting project I have to stick with “throwing” the thread for now.

I found your Norwegian purl this week, and I have to say I am so happy to learn this. I have always knitted the way you show here with finger close and yarn down. Then when I would move yarn in front to purl, tension and hand position would change. Knitting for about 8 years and have finally found the way that works for me= The Norwegian way. This is SO VERY helpful!! Thank you for teaching!

Yay! I just completed my first Norwegian purl. I did 2 rows in Norwegian knit and am amazed at how even and smooth the stitches look as well as how easily tension is maintained. I’ve found my new way of knitting and purling. Thank you!

Thank you so much for your videos on Norwegian knitting and purling! First, I got the knitting and now I can finally purl. I watched the video several times and then it clicked. I love it! I used to be an English thrower but that has all changed.

I am from India, colder part of the country. KZbin did a great job suggesting you guys. You are awesome and I learned Norwegian knitting from your videos. I could knit and purl so easily which i had been struggling for more than two weeks. Yes, I am a beginner and I am glad to see best technic at the right time :) I did lot of circus with my working yarn, now I simply love how my index and middle figures are placed on the needle and the flow of working yarn without much twist and the emergency trick of pulling the yarn down was fabulous. I am totally enjoying it! Thank you!

So I am an avid crocheter and I couldn't get my hands to purl until I learned the Norwegian purl by watching Arne. I think I watched that video 10 times until I got it. Now I enjoy knitting just as much as crocheting. However I did not now about keeping my fingers down. I'm always going to remember to pull the cord in case of emergency 😋 Thank you so much and I love watching your videos.
