Thank you for explaining this so well! I always tried to learn off my grandma, and she went so fast that she struggled to teach me because slowing down confused her! I’m trying to learn so I can finish off her projects that she left for me when she passed away, and I got really upset earlier when I realised how far away from being able to do them I am - your explanation on how to flick really helped me speed up and it’s really helped cheer me up and give me some hope that I won’t let her down!!

Great tips in the video. Maybe somebody else mentioned this but... I like to make a single turn of the yarn around my pinky which helps to regulate the tension on the line as it crosses over my index finger. This improves my ability to hold it on the second or first knuckle. If I am using two colors I'll put the second one around my ring finger and then I never have to let go of anything in order change .

This is a vey good video. I have been knitting for about 60 years. My mother taught me English. I have often wanted to change my method. I don't really drop the right needle, I hold it with my left hand and throw the yarn with my right index finger by would love to flick. The problem is my arthritis is so bad in my hands, especially my right hand that it makes it hard. I started a wrap that is 1x1 rib with a mohair blend. It may be 10 years in the making. :). I don't know why I am bothered by my speed, like you said it isn't a competition and there are no knitting police, and I am blessed that my gauge is spot on, but I am. I am going to try your method and see if maybe it will work. The explanation of holding the yarn at the end of your finger was a great pointer for me. TFS

I am a flicker, too. I find another benefit to holding the yarn closer to the top of your finger is that the of the needle doesn't graze your fingertip as much.

I am a left handed English knitter. I like the smoothness of your technique but right now first try, it is very awkward for me. I will practice because I do get hand pain and I would like more speed. My tip to any lefties, is try Portuguese knitting. I wear a little pin high on my right chest and my yarn goes through it. It allows for flicking and all stitches come to the front. Very Pink Knits channel has a great tutorial.

I hold my yarn the same as I would for English knitting. I sometimes knit like you’ve shown but was told that this wasn’t “flicking.” Flicking involves rotating the the needles to grab the yarn - almost changing the angle of them based on leveraging them from bottom. You hold your hands a bit away from the tips rotate your hands together, which brings the points together like a lever, then your fingers don’t do any work only the needles.

Interesting. I live in the UK and have been knitting for many years now - and all the knitters that I know have always “flicked” this way. I wondered why so many online videos of how to knit the “English” way (there are other parts of the UK, you know!) looked so peculiar. They show the “throwing” method - but I only used that method as a child learning to knit!

If you want speedy and control, without hand pain, try Irish Cottage knitting Or some call it Lever knittting. One of the fastest forms of knitting. This is how I was taught. I never tire or get any pain.

I struggled for years with English knitting. Then I found Continental and never looked back. English throwing always made my shoulder hurt. But, I know I wasn't doing it the right way. I would like to try some color work, holding one color in each hand. That will require me to find a way to knit English in a more comfortable manner. Your instructions on flicking are the most clear I've viewed so far. Thanks for the tips, I will definitely practice so that I can give some two color work a try.

I found an older video about speed knitting and wanted to see more, since I seem to always be pressed for time; I'll need a gift, find one I like and kill myself making it in 3 days. I've only knitted for about 30 years and taught myself from a book. Only recently was I introduced to anything other than the English method and I probably won't change at 69 years old. I crochet, too and have noticed crochet is harder on my left hand. English style knitting is harder on my right hand, so I can trade off if I get tired doing one or the other. My knitting style is mostly; l have learned, a combination of the leaver and shuttle styles. Anything to get the most stitches with the least amount of motion. This leans me more toward straight needles. Double points for socks, too, because again I can brace the butt of the needle against my stomach. On a good stretch of simple knit I can do 50 stitches a minute, but adjustments as you say slows things down. Maybe if I live long enough I'll get faster, but it's ok if I don't. I put your video on 1/4 speed and that helped me see what you were doing more clearly. Thank you and enjoy your knitting ☺️

When I knit continental style with two colors I flick with both left and right hand. it saves time, it's fun because you need to engage "both sides of the brain" at the same time :)

I find it interesting that people think letting go of the needle to wrap the yarn is “traditional”. I have been knitting for 64 years and it has only been in the last 30 years or so that I have seen people doing this. Maybe it was a regional trend that got passed on when knitting became popular again in the 80’s. I do remember at some point seeing some TV knitting instructors doing it but normally they were using bulky yard and very large needles. I have always knitted with the lever, flicking, or german method (continental) and now I have added the Portuguese method. The more ways you know how to knit the better, so you can avoid repetitive stress.

Yes we do & I worked out how to do continental style keeping the yarn in the right hand as I had learned English style as a child & I didn’t want to quit holding it in my right hand but you know we always learn to flip things even writing backwards hehe 😂 😂😉

All use both hands and while knitting continental style you hold your yarn in your left hand. But although l learned continentalestyle very quickly about 44 years agao there was s.th.l was suffering all the time. My answer in knitting was flicking and now l learn fair lsle in flicking style. Try continental style to go even faster. I use both techniques when I do color work (hold one color in each hand) but when using a single color continental (or Scandinavian) style is much more efficient.

I have my own way. We all have our own way. None of the videos I reviewed - unless I passed out - indicate the yarn should be close to the fingertip. That’s critical, right? Stacy over at Very Pink Knits holds the yarn so that it comes up from the needle around the index finger back to front. I was so relieved when I saw her do that because I just can't get this method right; I was having the same issue as you! Give it a try and and see how you go. I hope it was OK to mention anothet KZbinr here.

It can help to experiment with different ways to hold the rest of the yarn- I sometimes wrap my pinky or middle fingers, depending on how slippery or grippy the yarn is to try and keep things even.

The more knitting videos I watch, the more I realise that I have a bit of an odd way of doing it. I'm an English style knitter in that I manipulate the yarn with my right hand, but for whatever reason, I have the habit of keeping the right needle fairly stationary and instead moving the left needle to work stitches. In combination with the flicking method, it goes pretty smoothly and quickly.

Noah, that's how I knit too. My right needle is clamped under my arm, and the left needle does all the movement. I was told this is the Yorkshire way of knitting. 🇬🇧

@@M5518-k5u Me, I brace the needle against my body rather than under my arm, but yeah. I've since learned that this is called lever knitting or Irish cottage knitting. Supposedly, this style of knitting also causes less hand and wrist strain.

The throwing method that everyone calls English style is in fact the way beginers knit in England and most knitters flick with the right hand finger much closer to the work almost skimming the stitches on the right hand needle. This is a much faster method for experienced knitters . Though some find the continental method faster. The more experienced you get the faster you get. ☺

Actually, from what I was taught by my Gran in the 60s throwing the wool is considered the wrong way, what you call flicking is the correct way, and how the majority of those I know, and how we in the UK are taught. I actually do throw my wool, even though my Gran, teachers at school etc have tried to get me to do it the correct way, I can't get on with it, I out it down to being left-handed. They say throwing the yarn doesn't give you an even tension, or the same neatest, but after 50 years of knitting I don't agree 😁

Try holding the right hand needle like a pencil, much easier, and quicker, I learnt as a eight year old, first holding the needles as you do, then as I needed more speed, was taught to hold the right needle as a pencil, and to not grip the needles so tightly.

"Dropping the needle" is not the traditional English knitting method. Learners do this when they don't yet have the coordination to knit properly. Every stitch is made by simply moving the index finger, with the right needle constantly supported between thumb and forefinger, or sometimes a knitting belt.

Yes, right! and you fly over your fabric! WOW! That's so great! Btw: Your needles instead aren't the best for you l guess. Pardon: l'm a knitter and knitting - teacher, l knit since over 44 years. You do what you like best, that's clear! But: look at the part where needles meet cables: they're curved at one side! So you've to see that the curve is in the right position to let the stitches go up to the needle. This slows you down a bit. Give it a try with needles without that curve, please! You'll see! I knit - after giving over 800€ for all kinds of brandings - good and - mostly - bad ones, l found 2 brandings worth their prizes: Chiaogoo!!!: needles and cables! Cables are made by tiny seel wires, coated with nylon. They don't curleever! I curled and fixed cables for half a year to test it: nothing happended! For me they're the best. But Hiya Hiya - needles are a little bit sharper, at least in sizes 1.5 mm to 2,75 mm, but it's so tiny it doesn't make the difference to anything, only your finger tips hurt a bit more. Difference in shape is 0.025 mm each tip. HHeis the sharpest needles (HHtsharp) at the market. I got both: HH and CG as sets from 2.0 up to 10.0 mm , l dremeled the adapters of HHeto make them fit to the S and mini cables (they did!!!/do!!!) and at the end Hiya Hiya: needles are great, cables ok, good: they swivvel around by their joints where cables need screwing - part. But it might be that some very tiny yarn of 2,0mm needles to 3.5 mm needles can stop there and you might need your thump to help over. If not, it's ok. They curl like all plastic/nylon cables. So at last l nearly always knit with CG (Chiaogoo = CG, HH = Hiya Hiya). l don' t know what is best for you, everyone feels different and that's great. It's only a begging: give it a try, you before can't imagine how much your knitting world will turn to better: for your joints and ankles, too! Be blessed and healthy in these times of Corona, wear masks etc… and, please, give me an answer to what l wrote to you. Thanks

Thanks for your thorough reply, I do agree with you on Chiaogoo being best followed by the Hiya Hiya. Even though those are my favourites I have an assortment of different needles in different sizes so I just use what I have, even if it isn’t perfect!

I don’t know where the idea comes from that English is slower than continental. My grandmother taught me English and if you saw her knit no one one would say it’s slower ..this idea of taking your hand completely off the needle after going through the stitch is absolute rubbish ..the movement is very slight a forward movement that in sleight of hand can be missed it’s so fast. Even the way your yarn loops over your finger is definitely continental like. It’s annoys me these tutorials
