In this video I show you the 3 special techniques I use to knit toe up socks - Judy's Magic Cast On, Increasing for the Toe, and How to Knit a Short Row Heel. These are the exact techniques I used for the socks in my new sock collection "Look at Those Legs!", which you can find at www.girlyknits.com or on my blog here: knittingisaweso...
Enjoy!
My favorite sock yarn to knit with (used for the animal sock featured in the demo): shrsl.com/2edim

I love your socks, but can’t handle DPNs. You said this can be done with magic loop. Could you please do another video showing how it’s done with ML? Please don’t short cut your technique. Knit the whole sock on the video. I know it’s a lot to ask, but your socks are some of the cutest I’ve seen and I’m just beginning sock knitting. Thanks so much.

I love the no seam part an they are pretty easy, I only wish I knew personally how to make them not so "edged"?? And the heal not so deep. My mom loves them! But the heel is too deep for her. Everywhere else is fine. Thank you for making this comprehensive and easy to follow tutorial free to the public.

Hailey Good hi! If you want a more shallow heel, you would just not do as many short rows :)

do you have a written pattern available too? after the first set of increases I am coming up with 7 stitches on both needles.
@Voniquaz
@Voniquaz 8 жыл бұрын
+Mykala McIntyre same here! If I have 5 stitches on each needle and I'm adding a stitch on both ends...7 stitches makes sense, no? I have no clue how she only has 6 haha
@bethlovespunk007
@bethlovespunk007 8 жыл бұрын
+Voniquaz Anyone figure this out? I'm lost. Started out with 5 stitches on each needle. You add 2 stitches per increase on each needle. 5+2=7... but she clearly has seven stitches on one needle and 6 on the other when she splits it up after the first set of increases... I am so confused as to where that stitch went!

+Voniquaz I'm so sorry, I made a mistake and didn't realize it! You should have 7 sts on each needle after the first increase rnd. Sorry about that!

+Mykala McIntyre That is correct! I'm so sorry, I made a mistake and didn't realize it until after filming this video! All of my patterns are much more detailed with instructions, this was just to provide a visual of the techniques :)

+BethLovesPunk007 I made a mistake, I'm sorry! 7 sts on each needle after the first increase round in correct :) When you split them up there will be 3 sts on one needle and 4 on the other.

You do such a nice job of explaining techniques. Thank you! I really like how the heel is formed in your tutorial. When I first tried doing socks with a heel method using M1s and contrasting color, I was changing thread so often but your method of making heels with wrapping the stitches makes it much easier for changing color. When I did try the M1 method, I liked how the heel was gently curved. If you change the number of stitches left unwrapped in your method, does that affect the curving of the heel? For example, you leave 5 stitches unwrapped in the center of the heel. If I changed that to a larger number, would that make the heel less of a right angle? Thank you!
@laurenriker7532
@laurenriker7532 8 жыл бұрын
+Janet Lanier Hi Janet! I believe that's correct - more stitches left unwrapped, less of an angle. Glad you enjoyed the tutorial!

I have knitted 3 pairs of toe up socks now. I think I have the knitting of the sock down and understand the construction. My problem is the the sock fits perfectly except for the area just before the heel and right after the heel like around the bottom of my ankle is very tight. How to I fix that?

Hi Kathleen! It depends on what pattern you are using / what yarn weight. Here are my sock patterns - they have the needle sizes listed, as you will see they vary: girlyknits.com/patterns/sock-designs/ . I was using size 4's in the video because I was using a sport weight yarn, but if you were using a fingering weight yarn which is more common you would probably be using a smaller needle like a 2. Hope that helps!

What weight exactly? Like fingering? You definitely can, you just want to make sure you are casting on the proper number of stitches to fit you - it will be easiest to use a pattern using the weight of yarn that you want to use and it will have that info!
