Wow! What a great variety of beautiful cacti and some of them look really big. Must have taken years to grow. I'm really envious here. Hope mine will look as wonderful as yours in the years to come. Here in Malaysia cactuses are expensive and the bigger and rarer they are, the more expensive they get. But I love your cacti and enthusiasm for them, it's infectious 😶😶😶

I took care of the job cacti a couple of weeks ago, it was two november cacti, or thanksgiving cacti, as they call them in the US. I took them home to have a look, and I gave them new soil and a slightly bigger pot. One of the two was yellowing badly, but it's already greened up quite a bit. :)

Suprisingly some plants can stay in the same pots for decades. I was recently speaking to a old collector the longest he left a cactus in a pot was for over 45 years. The cactus was healthy and bloomed twice a year.
@desertplantsofavalon2 жыл бұрын
WOW at being in the same pot for 45 years :-D and I always think that as long as cacti are fertilised they are best to stay in the same pot for as long as they can be haha, thanks so much Zcoan for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Sunday XXXX

Awwww thank you so very much Paul :-D yes haha repotting the spiny guys is always a dilemma, I use pieces of newspaper or thin cardboard wrapped around my hands to handle the very spiny ones that like to 'bite' LOL! :-D I find gloves are not that good as the spines can go straight through them 'ouch' but the newspaper and cardboard works well, thanks so much Paul for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Wednesday XXXX

Hi Lyn thanks for all your lovely and helpful videos, I just wondered if you could help with a problem I have experienced, I purchased a Myrtillocactus geometrizans in a 8 cm pot around 3-4 years ago but 1 of them dried up and eventually I broke it off now the other one seems to be shrivelling up too, do you know what could be the cause of this at all, they're not in direct sunlight and I don't water it too often, maybe 2-3 times a month.
@desertplantsofavalon7 жыл бұрын
Hi there :-) so sorry to hear about ypour cactus, there could be a number of reasons but the most common cause could be down to the roots being damaged either by bugs that live in the soil or the roots especially root mealies or the soil is not the right type, the best thing to do is to remove the plant from the pot and thoroughly check over the root system to check for any signs of bugs that could be taking the moisture from the roots, if everything looks ok then it may be a good idea to still completely re pot the plant into fresh soil, and then let the cactus recover in a bright spot but away from very strong sunshine for a couple of weeks to allow the plant to settle into the new pot and do not water for the first two weeks :-) then after 2 weeks you can move the plant into direct sunlight as Myrtillocactus love as much sunshine as possible and less sun can envourage spindly growth which can cause stem die back, good luck with your cactus and let me know how you get on :-) thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happiness and plant power from right across the Emerald Isle for a terrific Thursday today XXXX

I bought a succulent arrangement from Home Depot and I love them it's a large variety and different types that I noticed every time I water them they dry right out in the bottom leaves keep drying up and falling off and it takes it a minute to start soaking in the water and it becomes like sawdust when it gets wet but it takes it a minute at least a good 10 minutes of me using a syringe putting drops in there before it starts fluff and up I need to know if this is the soil you're talking about that I need to change it so then I really need to know I'm going to do it anyways but if that's why there are shriveling up that's great news for me because I'm going to meet Lee change them as soon as I get to the store thank you for your great video
@desertplantsofavalon7 жыл бұрын
Hi Lea :-) thats so wonderful that you bought an arrangement from Home depot and I bet its beautiful :-) Yes it sounds to me like you definitely have the soil in the pot that is the peat that dries up too fast, and it is always so difficult to re wet the soil again with the peat based soils :-) I am almost sure that this is why your leaves are drying up and because your plants are not getting enough chance to take up water the leaves are falling off, thats brilliant news that you are going to be changing the soil and if you can get a soil that is loam based instead of peat based this will make a massive improvement to your plants as loam based soils retain water for longer and are much easier to get wet :-) I like to use a loam based soil with added grit or perlite and a bit of horticultural sand, but you can also use 50% loam based soil and 50 % perlite or small grit :-) here is a link to a video I have made on How i make my own cactus and succulent soil : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqSce6RtpseZd5I thanks so much for watching Lea and sending you lots of love and happy growing from Ireland and have a fantastic Wednesday today XXXX

can I grow desert cactus in only sand with a little soil in bottom of pot??
@desertplantsofavalon8 жыл бұрын
Hi Saurav :-) I wouldn't recommend growing desert cacti in mostly sand because there wouldn't be any nutrients in the sand, it would be better if you mixed the sand with the soil, Desert cacti would survive in mostly sand if you was able to fertilize them regularly with a good plant food, but it would be much better if you could pot them into a mostly soil mix, you can use 50 % sand and 50% soil and i like to use this mix myself a lot and it works very well :-) Hope this helps :-) thanks so much for watching and sending you much love and happy growing from Ireland XXXX

Would it be a good idea to use artificial light on my cacti/succulents?
@desertplantsofavalon8 жыл бұрын
Hi Pablo :-) if you keep your plants in a sunny position then there is no need for artificial lighting, but if you keep your plant in a window that receives very little or no sunshine then artificial lighting can be a help to provide the extra light these plants require, but I don't give them any artificial light and I live in Ireland that is not the sunniest spot to live, but my plants do really well, you only need to use artificial light if you grow your plants in a sunless or windowless position :-) thanks so much for watching and have a fantastic week ahead XXXX

How long did it take your Pencil Cactus to get that big? I just got some little ones last month, and every time I water them they grow! I was concerned at first, because the new growth was white. But over a few days it goes yellow then a healthy spring green. Does your plant do the same?

@desertplantsofavalon3 жыл бұрын
