@@JesseSpec Thanks! :D I was all in on getting a K engine over a 2ZZ, then I saw the prices plus all the extra parts you need lol. The 2ZZ is a great engine but the power gain are not that big for the money, around 160HP to the wheels I believe. So I'm thinking about boosting the 1ZZ instead, a lot less complicated and you can get quite a bit of HP from it. I would get the piston rods and bearings if you want to go over 220HP though but considering how light weight the Spyder is 220 should be a good number to shoot for.

Great comparison. Appreciate you taking your time and showing us dyno sheets of modded vs stock 2zz and k20. And vise versa. No one else ever did that before. There is great potential in those engines. One is definitely more affordable and easy to work on then the other. But the extra work that the k20 brings, of course brings way more powaa and VTEC! This also gives the 2zz a whole new respect and limelight. In reality kswap will be the best swap if you want to modify heavy and raw but it's more expensive and more work. A 2zz is easier to swap, the numbers aren't insane but when modified some it's a solid swap and passing that 200hp is possible In the end the mr-s is a super light car and both swaps will be worth it . people need to realize this is a 1.8l and k20 is 2.0. and they're producing similar numbers until k20 is fully modded and tuned. Makes me imagine if the 2zz was only 2.0L?? :O I'll go 2zz swap for the simplicity sake. Toyota reliability. And keeping the mr-s Toyota. In the end you can always turbo mr-s 2zz and maybe still will be cheaper then k20 😂
@JesseSpec
@JesseSpec 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! You Exactly understand my point in regards to the 2zz. As a street car, the 2zz is awesome and probably the better choice for price and ease of the work. As a true racecar, you need to do the same mods on both engines to make them reliable, so I guess going K20 is my choice.

A few points to this, if you go the k20 route there is a lot of custom fab work that needs done, engine mount, intake, manifold and exhaust, wiring loom, i'm assuming you would also need custom length drive shafts also, this adds a lot of cost on. Probably the same amount it would cost to add a decent turbo kit and ecu to the 2zz, so your going to get more power for your money going with a 2zz as it's pretty much a straight swap for the mr-s, no extra fab work or costs and you can spend that money on improving the engine instead. If it was going to be a drag strip or 1 mile car i would spend the extra to swap the k20 as down the line you can get more power, if i was going to use it mainly for track and b roads and to have fun, 2zz all the way, these engines can still happily push 700+hp with the right parts which is way to much power for a track car anyway, spend most your time spinning tires than actually going fast. For something the size and weight of the mr-s, you are better off with around 350-400hp on a nicely tuned engine with a wide power range, instead of something with huge power where you only get lag or full boost and 0 traction. And just looking at engine costs for replacement, because the k20 is a popular swap for a lot of different cars the price of them is around 3-4 times more than a 2zz engine. K20 is only going to start getting cheaper when you hit that 1000hp mark where all the extra r&d that has been done on the k20 will pull ahead and you can buy off the shelf parts to hit that mark, your going to need a good engine builder and some unknown parts to push a 2zz that high. But it all comes down to what you want to use the car for, drag strip, 1 mile events, top speed runs you want the k20, for track, street, canyon, uphill events, best bang for buck 2zz all the way.

The 2zz is also quite plentiful in junkyards appearing in the Vibe GT, Matrix XRS, Corolla XRS, and Celica GTS. These are often overlooked by DIY auto enthusiasts as opposed to Honda engines making cheap 2zz and components plentiful and cheap. While Honda engines are superior in tuning capability the 2zz has proven to be capable of making well over 500hp (although the reliability is a valid concern). If you Toyota fellas want more 2zz content check out the Jamaican drag racing scene, a good channel on KZbin is motorsportsja showcasing 2zz swapped starlets and Corollas making impressive passes.

One thing I’d like to mention as far as advantages of using the k20 vs the 2zz is once installed, you now have the option to swap blocks out for the 2.4 liter. Many people build these “Frankenstein” motors as I’m sure you are aware of with k20 heads on k24 blocks. If you ever decided to, you could increase your displacement even more whereas with the 2zz you wouldn’t be able to. Also, aftermarket support is just better for the Honda engine. I’m currently in the process of dropping a k24 in my sw20. It is costly though.

In new zealand you can get a JDM spec 2zz celica for about 7k or corolla 2zz for about 5-6k. While type R spec B18cs are worth well over 12-15k and type r spec k20s are in the 20s, 2zz is great value for money considering you get 190HP for well under 10k with a k20 you get a bit over 200hp for 3x as much. not good value for money considering you can just buy a celica and drop stage 2 cams exhaust and intake and gain 15hp without a tune as shown on the fourms before needing an aftermarket ecu. only let down is the gearbox. this is coming from someone that owns a 2zz jdm spec celica with LSD and i admit the k20 is 100% the better engine but value for money wise its janked up because of how sought after they are therefore making it not a great value for money even though a k20 has way better after market support. Im happy with my 2zzge celica the lift kicks in harder than a k20a2 and the only thing left to do on my celica is stage 2 cams and il be really happy.

Hi, Thanks for your very comprehensive comment and the time you took for writing it. As you can see in my video (and you can probably guess it), I am 100% agreeing with you. I love the 2zz. Its one of my favorite engines ever. However, it let me down and broke (take a look at my playlist of my 20+ 2zz swap episodes, including the race footage when I broke it). So for me, reliability is the only element I've been let down on. I actually was disappointed in the k20 (euro spec in stock form). But, if you have some extra time, take a look at the swap series I am doing right now for the K20. Its just coming to an end now and the engine has a few nice bits on it and I will see what sort of power I can make. 2ZZ has an interesting niche, at least here in Poland where I live. In a lot of amature racing leagues there are different classifications based upon stuff like engine displacement and stuff. 2ZZ and K20 would fall under the same class, but most of them make an exception for K series and classify it like a much larger displacement engine or one with forced induction, bc even NA they can make a LOT more power than pretty much any other engine, so those classes under 2.0 liters of displacement would be all just K series races and competition of "who can throw more money to squeeze a few more horsepower from their K20" and that's not fun and would quickly kill interest in the league. So for a lot of motorsport leagues it makes sense to tune up a 2ZZ since it has a lot of the same characteristics that make K20 so good but it isn't targeted by rules. Plus in the case of MR2 specifically it's basically the easies swap in the world and is barely any more difficult than putting in stock engine.

@@spyderzetta3391 hi! Good info, thanks for sharing. I am afraid 25lbs (11kg) on the ensemble of power trains in difference can be compensated by a lighweight battery. I honestly think the weight distribution argument doesn’t seem to be significant enough to a point it would upset the balance (if your numbers are accurate). Corner balancing will really make the difference very minor I think. Don’t You think?
@spyderzetta3391
@spyderzetta3391 2 жыл бұрын
@@JesseSpec I believe fully assembled engine+transmissions+accessories it was closer to 50LB difference. So if we are talking stock for stock, sure lots of things can be done to offset some weight. Lighter weight headers, exhaust, intake, battery, etc. This can be done on any of these engine to further reduce their overall weight. But yeah the point is that the 2zzge the lighter engine. And any weight that is reduced or added on any car needs to be taken into consideration when setting up optimal car balance. Like you said, corner balancing is a good example. Or changing spring rates, etc. Also I think the K20 is a taller motor (I think..) so center of gravity in the mid rear will be a little higher which can affect overall balance. Once again, something that can be fixed with different chassis and suspension tuning. You now have a k20 and a 2zzge in your garage. Would be great if you could do a comparison. I own a 2002 spyder and was already planning a K20 swap. But 2zzge is a very good option as well.

Coming from my old Honda Civic EM1 with the B16a2 and recently a SIR EP3 K20A3...I found I really missed the high strung, high revving nature of the EM1...mind you the lack of torque was really noticeable down low. That being said, from 111ft/lbs of tq to 132 ft/lbs...with peak torque coming on sooner than even the Type R....the base EP3 felt like a torque monster lol. Enter my recently acquired sleeper Corolla XRS lol... I'm so happy to be back in a high revving engine again. Having the 2ZZ and 6spd is the perfect blend of both worlds... essentially a larger B16 engine but with torque lol. I will say i feel lift engagement is a rouch high on the stock ecu in the Corolla at 6800rpm though. But on the other hand....it keeps you out of trouble a bit because you have to be really deliberate with your gear selection and to rev it to the moon..because getting to lift takes noticeably longer than VTEC engagement lol. I will say a lot of people go out of their way to get around that grocery getter Corolla hogging the fast lane and are surprised when they're not getting any closer to me 🤣🤣 What do you recommend for a daily driver who does occasional autocross as an ecu solution? Was thinking of picking up an '03 Matrix ECU with factory 6200rpm lift engagement but no one really re-pins those anymore i don't rhink. What confuses me is how did the Toyota Matrix XRS and Corolla XRS consistently beat the 7th/8th Gen Honda Civic Si and Acura RSX Type S in highway roll races on KZbin despite the 1.8L 2ZZ being an on average weaker engine with less hp than the 2.0L K20? This is because the Toyota engine’s torque curve is actually higher than the Honda’s eh? To top it off apparently the K20 can stay in VTEC thresholds while shifting while according to period Car and Driver reviews, the 2ZZ usually falls out of VVTi?

Hey Jesse, great work as always :) I was wondering what kind of downpipe you were using on the 2zz? I saw you used the MWR manifold and I was unsure if it would get decent power figures compared to the stock or PPE manifold/downpipe combo, but appearently it does. I know the 1zz stock downpipe chokes the 2zz but I think mainly becouse of the restrictions in the flex pipes, so my hope is that with the removal of those and the MWR manifold I could still get decent power when I use that one. Which makes the swap more easy and also I want to keep the exhaust becouse of noise levels as stock as possible (I will accept that it will make less power than with a complete free flowing exhaust, but atleast keep the loss as low as possible). Did you order the manifold from MWR directly btw or another source in europe?

Hi, Thanks for your comment! The Downpipe is an Ebay spec one. Isn't the best, but for getting the whole care ready quickly and at a good price, this is what I wanted to do. Good points, but the other issue with the 2ZZ is poor durability of the C series transmission. Much better options with the K series. Second, while PEAK power of your tuned 2ZZ is similar to the K20, another adage is, “area under the curve”. The horsepower comes on much earlier and stronger with the K20 once lift engages. I have a 2ZZ, and that is it’s biggest weakness for me…a very narrow, peaky powerband that is barely usable, even with a 6 speed.
@absolutezero7344
@absolutezero7344 2 жыл бұрын
While true, I think that is actually where the fun comes from. It gives the engine character because the 2ZZ is just so eager to deliver performance yet it makes you work for it instead of serving it to you on a silver platter, which in turn forces you a be better driver to compensate and maximize that powerband. If you want area under the curve just get a big lazy V8 and call it a day.
@JesseSpec

Don’t worry, i know the concept of area under the curve. And this video actually shows that the 2zz, suprisingly, isn’t that far away at all than the k20. The trick is lowering lift stock 2zz ecus lift point is anywhere from 6200-6800rpm depending on the ecu that’s why the power curve isn’t as good a k20. My lift is set at 5800rpm with redline at 8600rpm and the power curve is very different crazy with just a few rpm difference in lift engagement can do. Every time I shift I land in lift always in the powerband.

@@JesseSpec I watched the video before commenting. The K20 has much more power below where the lift kicks in on the 2ZZ (based on the dyno curves that you posted). @@absolutezero7344 I have a Spyder with a 2ZZ. A V8 is a tough fit in a Spyder (essentially impossible) and also doesn’t do much for gas mileage on a car that is driven daily in addition to being driven occasionally on the track or autocross events. The 2ZZ is eager to deliver performance, but only after you hit lift above 6000 rpm. It is a good match for the Spyder as it is an easy and inexpensive swap. It is also rather gutless and delivers essentially the same performance as the 1ZZ unless you rev it to the moon.

Thanks for the input. Honestly I don’t think this is as easy as an option in Europe or Switzerland, they aren’t popular here. @@JesseSpec to me maybe? Lmfao. It's a fact dude. In fact it's a fact based off YOUR criteria. You complain about people saying the k20 is better by saying the 1.8 Toyota engine can actually "do better" so you compare the weakest k20. The k20 that in the Honda community isn't even considered to have legit vtec. The ep3/base RSX basically have economy vtec that's more like vvti on a Toyota. The TYPE S And TSX and Accord euro R use the "real" vtec " that actually switches over to the more aggressive cam later in the rpm. And you ain't make 300-350whp naturally aspirated from a zz motor. Absolutely not. Totally possible with a Kseries. And I'm a Toyota fan more so than Honda so there's no bias in favor of Honda, it just is what it is. Your comparison compares the worst Kseries.
