Ushma Soni I’m making some of those, too. I would use fusible interfacing that wouldn’t need to be quilted, & then do the vinyl. That way, you wouldn’t risk melting the vinyl by adding too much heat at one time/point of ironing.

When you're cutting out the iron-on vinyl, why didn't you place your fabric right up to the edge of the start of the roll? It looked like you wasted the first inch of vinyl. It looked to be in good condition, so you could've saved yourself some cutting out too. Maybe I'm more thrifty than most but can"t see the point in throwing money away.
@kimmityler5631
@kimmityler5631 7 жыл бұрын
I suspect its because it would have the tendency to curl up because that edge is often folded oddly in the box and dealing with it while trying to be fast in a tutorial isn't worth the tiny bit of vinyl saved :) I definitely find it easier to use the really curling pieces if you apply them to a big piece of fabric *then* cut.

I was thinking about doing the same thing, or using a clear vinyl table cloth. You can get that stuff pretty cheap, & even some at the dollar store! Or get end if the year clearance sale vinyl pool items! However, I think they would be easy/good to use for making something semi-waterproof, they wouldn’t be fusible, so there might be gaps in the waterproofing, like she mentioned. I don’t know if there’s anything you could use easily to actually fuse that kind of vinyl, without the expensive stuff, something that would show, or without melting the vinyl. If anyone knows a way, please fill us in!

@hotrockgoddess, right but I was just thinking of it as PUL fabric that is used to make cloth diapers, and of course what I was taught was the less holes you have to sew the better. So if you are putting a wet bathing suit in it, its not going to keep the water in the bag as well as if it didn't have holes in it. You are right about the polyester thread though.
@AloneInTheGarden
@AloneInTheGarden 7 жыл бұрын
Noodle Yes, I make cloth diapers and wetbags from PUL. PUL is not water proof, but rather water resistant. If it becomes saturated, it can leak through. Typically for something you'd be using for bathing suits, the vinyl would be on the inside anyway and not the outside. Similar to how the fabric side of a cloth diaper or wet bag shows outward, and the PUL is the inner lining. I'm sure you could definitely make these that way. Although, I wouldn't go crazy and sew a bunch of lines down the middle like she did for something I would be using for a bathing suit, but normally I don't have issues with my wetbags leaking from the seam unless something is absolutely soaked and is dripping a lot of liquid into the bag to where it's pooling. I think these bags were probably only meant to repel water/dirt etc from the outside. But they do make seam sealing tape that you can use to add extra water barrier :)
@profkanine
@profkanine 7 жыл бұрын
You can apply nail polish to the seam line to help if you need it to be more resistant. Nail Polish is very versatile

Well, yes, in theory you can do that. But you need to read the info on your particular laminate or vinyl product first. Many are not recommended to use on baby items, or things that will go in your mouth. So just research that out first. Each product can vary, so there's not an overall blanket statement on that.
@JaimeDornanLady

Easier thing to do (& very eco-friendly!) is what my mom used to do with mine. She always put my sandwiches in a Tupperware or Rubbermaid-type square sandwich container! My sandwiches never got squished between my books in my book bag, they stayed super fresh, the bread stayed soft instead of drying out, if anything leaked, it didn’t soak my sandwich, & the container is easy to REUSE & wash/disinfect in the dishwasher! You can also put hot water with a tiny amt. of bleach mixed in it now & then to disinfect it if you feel the need. I LOVED that my sandwich didn’t get squished! If your child isn’t good about remembering to bring their lunch box/bag home, that may not work for you. However, the other good thing is that those boxes can be found very inexpensive, & they even have them at the Dollar Store, sometimes in different colors and/or designs on them!

Nooo. You have to use the backing sheet for pressing to make sure it's smooth. Then you can put the press cloth on top. Pressing with just woven fabric will press the texture into the surface. You also shouldn't "quilt" the laminated fabric with a small stitch length like this because you're perforating and breaking the plastic.
@MADEEveryday
@MADEEveryday 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tips! Yes, I talk about that in the video...the quilting does perforate the plastic, so it's not "waterproof"...but the fabric is still water resistant and wipeable. The quilting is for aesthetic and to hold the layers together just a little bit better. You can omit the quilting if you'd prefer a tighter seal.

Whenever you make a mistake follow Julia Child’s example. She would say I am so glad I didn’t that now I can show you how to handle the mistake. I usually hear her voice, I’m so glad that happened. Saturday Night Live from the 70s was the best. Dan Akroid did skits on her. Ppl are concerned about a recent SNL skit about Kelly Ann, if they would look back to the 70s, they would see Chevy falling down in his skits on Gerald Ford.

Is this waterproof in the sense that you could use this fabric for cloth diapers? I haven't been impressed with the prints I've been able to find in laminated fabric and have decided I'll just make my own so my choices aren't so limited, but for this particular use, functionality is much more important than aesthetics and I need to be sure it's waterproof!

The decorative stitching sewn with neon thread defeats the "waterproof" effect of the Vinyl because the holes created by the needle allow moisture to wick thru.

You're right. Truly, the pouch is really more water *resistant* than waterproof, because even if the laminate isn't topstitched, water could still seep in through the construction seams or zipper area. But it's still nice to be able to wipe it clean! 😊

Can you use this for food pouches or is there another type of fabric to use for that? I'm thinking about making some reusable snack bags.

You need to check the info on the laminating material you use. Some laminates are not recommended for food products because it contains BPA. Do a google search and you'll find more info. - Dana

Great videos. I too never knew this stuff existed. I'm recovering the seat and back on my golf cart and this stuff will really help the beautiful fabric I bought last longer . I bought outdoor fabric but it is not water repellent so I'm definitely going to try this .Thanks alot

This is super cool! I never knew this even existed! Thanks Dana!! :) I had a question. If you laminate both sides of the fabric to make a pouch, when u attach the zipper will you still be able to iron it flat using a press cloth and how easy is it to sew?
@MADEEveryday
@MADEEveryday 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Yay! It's always fun to learn about a new gadget or technique. I didn't laminate both sides of the fabric. The zipper pouch actually has two layers of fabric---an outer fabric, and a lining fabric (you can watch that video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2KkpJmQh76fiK8) So I lined the Right side of each of the fabrics, and left the Wrong sides just normal. And I don't think I used an iron after sewing the pouch. But if you needed to press something, you could always use a press cloth (dishtowel) over the top, so your iron is not touching the laminate directly. - Dana

Do you think it would work to laminate a bag I purchased from the store?
@MADEEveryday

That might not work, unless you take apart the seams, apply the laminate, and sew the bag back together.
