I agree with the turning while landing for more control plus it feels like a parallel turn stop in skiing where you kick up some snow. I do feel both aileron and elev as well as throttle allow more finesse on landings than a straight line like an airliner.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 8 жыл бұрын
+MicroRCFiend I had the same thought. Like a skidding stop on ice skates is what I thought of. I think another reason it's helpful is that the more sideways you are turned, the more your up-tilt turns into back-tilt. Think about it. So effectively, by yawing and rolling sideways of your direction of motion, you are reducing the up-tilt of the camera. Of course, you can't see where you're going any more, but if you've established that you're clear in that direction, it's no big deal. Also, as I mentioned, the camera is wider than it is tall, even with 4:3 standard-def, so you get a bit more view of the ground by rolling to the side.

I played a lot of Arma 3 and flew a lot of choppers with joystick. The concept is the same as you're suggestion of turning. It just makes sense, in terms of visibility and 'spotting' your landing, but it also allows you to kill your speed way more quickly thanks simply moving forward.

Thanks for the tips Josh! I just upped my flight cam and runcam to a 35 degree tilt. I have been quite literally doing circles on my landing areas to insure a smooth landing. I have been using a fixed point like you suggest for landing reference but still find myself giving it more throttle when I'm close the the ground. Its like im not trusting the height of the quad or something. But again I just went from a 20 degree tilt " I could see the ground" to this 3 flights ago and its something im definitely going to take your advice on. Thanks again for all the great vids bro keep em coming!

If you are very sensitive, you may be able to notice when the copter enters ground effect as a sign that you're near the ground.
@BruceLuckcuck
@BruceLuckcuck 8 жыл бұрын
On my copters with lots of camera tilt I like to use angle mode to land (assuming I don't have the accelerometer disabled!). At the end of the flight simply click it into angle mode and baby it back into the landing area. The advantage is that it reduces your workload and makes it easier to attain a zero velocity hover and then you simply descend slowly to the ground. Really helpful in windy conditions as well.

Joshua Bardwell Boo all you want! All I know is that I always make smooth, right-side-up landings and the rest of flying group tends to make… how to say it nicely… "interesting" landings! :) Note that I only use angle mode for landing on quads with lots of camera tilt. I always take off and fly in rate mode.

Love using a 2.1mm lens, you can definitely see more of the ground, and you also need less tilt on the cam to reach high speed without only seeing the ground. Not to mention the wider FOV also gives you more spacial awareness.

I think it's time they put the FPV cam on a tilting servo connected to the turning knob channel on your TX so you can manually adjust the camera angle on the fly and reduce for take off/landing and increase for fast flying exactly as you need..
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
It has been done. A servo is far too fragile IMO to put on a mini quad.

Joshua Bardwell yeah. seen the pan and tilt cameras in action in long range fixed wing FPV platforms.. great with those had tracking FPV goggles.. just tilt alone in the FPV quad cam with head tilt tracking would be cool.. maybe inside some kind of protective cage..

going to a 1.8mm lens will let you land with a 50 degree cam angle and fairly easy. I personally LOVE 1.8mm lens and I fly hard freestyle with 1.8mm and when in shooting thru race gates then I will use a 2.1mm lens.. once you fly 1.8mm lens and get used to it flying anything else just doesn't feel good.. it also makes wall climbs and dives very much easier to get setup.. I fly 35 to 40 degrees of tilt when racing and I fly 50 to 55 degrees when freestyle flying with that much uptilt it does become a challenge to land and not mess up props.. another way to do it, come in and yaw 180 degrees around and put it down the second you see movement almost stop, that takes a lot of practice to get the timing right and being at the right height as you come in.. most times that's how I do it, but it took a lot of take off, come in and lands to get it where I could do it 95% of the time perfectly.. once you have it right you can sit the copter down as gently as you can if you was flying zero tilt, it just takes time to learn it, going with a 1.8mm lens and you don't have to worry about it unless you fly stupid amounts of tilt, 1.8mm lens and 40 degrees of tilt you will be able to land without any thought because you can see so much. I loveeee my Swifts with 1.8mm lens on them, almost as much as I love My Eagle 2's.. ain't gonna lie tho, when flying in tight structure going from a normal 2.5mm lens to a 1.8mm lens is gonna take some getting used to if you have been flying a while and getting decent... but once you get to liking the 1.8s you will not wanna fly anything else.

Thanks for this video, very helpful, I have just fitted a 2.1mm lens to hopefully help with landings as was one of the many solutions you suggested on a previous video but have yet to fly with it. The picture does look pretty distorted and objects appear much further away (dead ahead) than they actually are, I just hope my brain can adjust to it. I can still see the ground however which was the aim.

+LeakyMeat i love 2.1mm... 2.8mm makes me feel like i have blinders on. not only can you see the ground below, you can see more to the sides which is nice proximity flying.

+prOkrEAt sweet, im looking forward to trying it, i experimented in the Hotprops sim putting the fov to it highest setting and i must admit it felt much easier to see for making turns and flips also (which i struggle with), seemed like the horizon was out of view for less time.

I struggled with this early on when I first started tilting my camera's...first noticed it on my Alien when I built it with the camera at max tilt and having never flown with that much tilt, I burned several minutes trying to land) What I do now is just assign angle mode to my flight switch and flip into angle mode when I land. from that point I just use the throttle and let the copter level itself. Takes some getting used to just like anything but works very well IMO

I've had an idea floating around in my head for a while. I build lots of foamie fixed wing and have a bunch of servos laying around. Some quad receivers have the ability to add a couple accessories through an AUX port. I'm considering attaching the camera to a servo on a two or three way switch. Have a set angle for flight, and an angle for landing at the flip of a switch. What do you think? If anything, it would be fun to try.

+seth davenport What about the change in light. You'll be blinded for a second when you take those goggles off. I've done that before trying to save a landing. Most of the time I just disarm flat above the ground and let it land on the bottom a foot or so off the ground.

+Joshua Bardwell lol you're a better pilot than me, sir. I normally opt for a 1-2ft disarm drop landing. flat on its belly in the grass never broke anything. also my multirotor likes to bounce and flip over if I touch down kinda hard which has broke props in the past. It sucks to fly 3 or 4 packs on a set of props and lose some to a landing haha.
