Launching your kite alone is a great skill, and using a rope anchor, means you can come back in and land your kite using the same rope anchor.
Personally, know 4 ways to self land, and 2 to self launch. The more ways you understand to do things on your own, the more of an independent kiteboarder you will be.
using an anchor to launch is one of the best and safest ways, due to the fact that you are not connected to the kite. it gives you a little more time to think and check your kite and gear

Good to hook the safety as well on the anchor so if something goes wrong, you can activate the safety without loosing the kite.

Yes, absolutely :) Some people even attach the safety leash to a separate anchor as a back up.

I also use a sand anchor and usually keep a long leash, (even though I'm not doing handle passes) and can use the lease in a pinch instead of the rope trick.

Yeah nice. I used to do that too with the leash :) That said, theses days i prefer a short front attached leash. If its sandy I just like to use the drag method, Just made a new video for it actually if interested kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXi3k5-ircl2hLc and if i come in and haven't set up an anchor that I need to land, I just fire the safety. :)

You could improvise a closed carabiner with clipping the carabiner into the rope and put a short strong rubberband on the button right above the rope ;) Thanks for this good tutorial :)

Kites designed for big air, Orbit, XR, XS, Rebel, Edge and the like will have very little wingtip area and are not as stable for this. I have seen how I parked my Dice on an anchor chain and it just happily stood there while my friends Orbit really didn't want to stay on it's wingtip. Just something to keep in mind that kites with bigger wing tips will be much more stable at this.

Yeah some do stand better than others for sure, but all kite shapes will stand up fine in good wind. It's only in the lighter wind ive found different shapes might roll over :)

Hey, thats no good! Im actually wearing an impact vest. If you get a good one that fits you well, then it would also provide a bit of support, but mainly its for direct impacts and flotation. I dislocated my left shoulder in the past, and while i was recovering i actually wore a shoulder strap that goes across your chest. I coupled that with a good wetsuit (thicker than needed for the conditions) and also a impact vest. I found that all 3 compressions really helped to support it. (that may or may not relate to a collarbone) I also made sure to always let that had go of the bar before any crashes, so it was never extended for impact. Hope that helps.

Watching lots of your videos as I’m just about a year into kiting and finally riding some despite the rough surf that comes w our wind in St Augustine Beach, Florida. Your totally right about not kiting when the wind is off shore :) In this video however the wind is cross-shore, the kite IS pointing out to sea, but in cross shore wind- the video thumbnail illustrates this, kite at the edge of the wind window ready to launch. Cross shore wind is ideal for kiting, It is Important to check for any hazards down wind of you, a good idea is to give yourself a practice zone with a downwind Exit Point. - Exit at 'that landmark' , walk back up the beach to entry point, and continue.. It's great that your analyzing the conditions, Keep it up :)

Which line did you connect the safety line to when walking back to the anchor point after the kite had settled on its wingtip? Was that the lower wingtip line or the central line?

NEVER hook to a "lower wingtip line"/steering line. The kite would loop if gets picked up with tension on the steering line! He hooked to a frontline.

Yeah it is, thats actually how i do it these days. just use a smaller carabiner and place it just above the quick release.

In gusty conditions would it help to put one or two handfuls of sand on the end that is sitting on the ground or would that make it too difficult to launch?

Hey Joseph, I have never tried that, it would be interesting to see. In some of the old tutorials for self launching there was sand placed on the wingtip, however, I never found this helped, so don't do it. With an anchor launch like this, even in gusty conditions, the kite seems to move forward and back ok by itself,. With sand on the tip, it might behave differently (perhaps better or perhaps worse) My hesitation would be that you set the kite position when the wind is stronger, and then the wind backs off, and instead of the kite sliding back in the window to where it wants to be, the bottom is "stuck" on the sand (with weight on it) and it causes the kite to roll back. This would be a major issue if it did play out like that If you want to test it out, start in smooth wind conditions and slowly progress to gusty. It would work fine to launch in smooth conditions :)

Kite Control Question please: I was always told that we have better control over the kite the closer to the centre of the bar the hand(s) is/are. Is that really true though ? Mathematics would prove exactly the reverse: What I mean is this: if you draw a circle around the end of the bar around the red and blue ends, if you turn the bar up just a few degrees, say 5 degrees from very close to the centre, it will move Sin(5) * R up on the edge of the circle/bar, and the longer the bar the more drastic the effect will be, but a lot less near the centre. This means that it is easier to make bigger angle moves the closer to the centre of the circle the hand is (control bar) so one would think that in order to make smaller and more precise/controlled angle moves the further away from the centre the better ? Instead of using the angle the bar is turned, we can easily think of the distance it goes up/down, small changes near the centre but much bigger near the outside ? It's a bit like having a bicycle and saying don't put your hands on the handles but try to control your bike by putting your hands the closest possible to the centre, good luck with that one...And the higher the speed the more dangerous that proposition is ? This is what worries me, the unplanned looping kite! I personally feel a lot more in control when my hand(s) are at least half way through the bar on each side of the centre ?

If you have a small and fast kite (lika a 6m), holding the bar close to the center will give to you stability because you will need more "strenght" to properly steer. Its like trying to open a door near the hinge, its not as easy as near the lockset.

Great point :) and you're totally right in most cases! We've made this video to cover you for those tricky launch areas that just aren't possible to run your lines downwind.. for example Rocky beaches (haha like exact opposite of the beach in this vid) as your lines get snagged walking around to launch position.
