I have laid down many horses in my career for many reasons, definitely helps horses with respect and trust issues. I thought you handled yourself well, was very informative and had the technic down pat. There are always going to be haters don’t let that stop you from what you’re doing. You did a first class job 👍. Coming from someone who has spent a lifetime with horses.

I LOVE how relaxed she was once laid down, and how she popped up when you asked for it, and she stood up and put her attention back on you right away. Her eyes sure were blinking thoughtfully. Love! I've done this with my mare several times, namely to mount from the ground. She is used to seeing me above her in a vulnerable situation. It really came in handy when she cut her back legs open and was on laying on the ground bleeding out. She didn't panic AT ALL when I came up to survey how bad her legs had been cut. The vet came out and she severed a tendon, was stitched up, and is still riding/ driving today. This is very beneficial to train them on, so glad she knew this 5 years ago. Very great informative video!

Ty, I've been reading the comments, and I can't believe how many people are giving you hate for this. You did a fantastic job! Some people just do not realize that a horse needs a *leader*. Not just a "friend". You're a great trainer who did an amazing job making sure the horse stayed calm and was comfortable. Props to you!(:

Ty Nitti Over 40 years in the horse business, the last 25 years with cutting horses. I've seen several ways to lay down a horse, this was by far the simplest, most gentle on the horse, and the slickest I've seen! Thanks for making it and ignore those who have no concept of what a horse is truly capable of, both good and bad!

You sir, are a fine horseman. Excellent video. Thanks so much for posting this. For the naysayers, laying a horse down is sometimes the only way to get them to stop being so defensive when you need to for instance, work on their feet, which HAS to be done three or four times a year or more. OP, I'd noticed you never did anything aggressively or in anger this is a key part of laying them down. One must NEVER be in a bad mood or angry when laying a horse down because they can tell, even if you're not swearing, they can sense your anger and that will scare them all the more. You must be nice nice nice the whole time and be patient. Once they're down, all the stroking you did is exactly right. It shows the horse that even when it is in the most vulnerable position, you mean it no harm and instead pet it nicely, scratch it's itchy spots, and maybe even give it a peppermint or some other sweet. All this will help later when the horse is upright and you have to lift and hold its feet to file or trim them etc.

I actually really enjoyed this video. If those of you who are posting mean and rude comments actually understand pressure and how to use it correctly, you would see that this gentleman is doing everything correctly. There are a lot of methods in the horse world that can be considered cruel from the outside world, or those people who are uneducated, such as yourselves, about how to use pressure and understand the body language of the horse. Educate yourself before you speak rashly. I really enjoyed how calm he was the entire time, and how he was very safe from beginning to end. This isn't just a random cowboy, this is an experienced trainer offering some ideas.

This is one of the many ways-done very carefully and with experience.Yeah if u know what ur doing, its okay.My horse had some problems and we layed her down and she was so much better afterwards!!It helps if your horse isn't submitting. If you can't see the pressure in the ropes as being her reward-LOOK HARDER!!!They treat themselves the same way in the herd, and even worse. There is nothing wrong with this video,it is nice and keep it up!Whatever way works for you thats fine.Don't tear other peoples ways and horsemanship down,it won't get you anywhere. Not everyone does it the same way!If you and your horse are happy with eachother, nobody can tell you your wrong. There is diiferent trainers and different horsemanship, some don't work with others, some do.Keep it up!

Thank you for this video. I have a little welsh X mare who was rescued and is very aggressive. 3 years later and a whole lot of kindness and patience, she's not made any improvement. As a last resort I heard about laying down a horse. I followed your video and got the pony to lay down. She almost went into a comatose state, very relaxed, closed eyes and occassional lifting of her head to graze a bit of grass. It was an experience we both needed in order to move forward. Thank you.

this guy is good . thank you. You explained it well. Lots of people don't understand horsemanship... This is what you do when you want a horse as a working animal and is expected to be obedient.... it needs to submit.... animals are livestock first and for most... we can work them out easily..... he is giving us a method to help us as a last resort if the animal is difficult..... so it can survive .... in society...... what do you do when a horse becomes a problem......lay it down... it submits.... then the rest is u to you.... :)

Great Video. In the 60's bought a sale horse . Needed to show her. Tried to clip her, trim feet etc. fought me all the way. Remembered an article in an old book on how TWO men could lay a horse down. Decided to try it by myself. Took hours, she fought, reared, struck, we went all around the barn and finally went down in the hay. I clipped her, trimmed her feet, sat on her. From than on she'd let me do anything to her, but not for anyone else. My blacksmith husband couldn't even pick up a foot

I am very impressed with your approach, and also with all the warnings and caution you express. As you say, there are so many things that can go haywire with this type of action. Over the years of training, I and my farrier friend have laid down three. All three went well and made a difference for the horse. We did not use a saddle. These animals are so powerful and when they feel threatened or under attack, it can go badly for them and anyone standing nearby. So, thank you for your humane and sane approach to this topic.

Ty; It's a pretty nice video.I liked it.I've done it for close to 40 years.I think you showed it well and tried to explain it to the inexperienced horse people.Good Job! The people complaining don't even understand WHY you lay a BAD horse down.It is evident that they have not ever had any broncs to start that will paw, bite, cow kick and try to eat you up or run you out of the round pen. As we breed better horses these days the round pens have changed some.Yours is tall enough & I know it is hot where you are by looking at the land behind you.But I believe I'd have another board in between your top two spaces to keep those bad ones from trying to jump through it.That's just my two cents on it.But I'm not being critical. It's your pen and you may not get those bad ones any more.I hope not any way.Good Video and keep it up.

A great video. I've seen this done so many times the wrong way where the handler was angry during the process, gave absolutely no release at any point, wouldn't let the horse get back up no matter how scared it was or how close to a fence it got, and basically violently forced the animal to the ground. If you force a horse to the ground violently, that's what a predator would do right before going in for the kill; and that's only going to result in a horse that's terrified of you, and destroys any possibility for trust between horse and handler. I've seen many self-proclaimed "cowboys" (they're not though, they're just jackasses) basically terrorize their horses. It's absolutely refreshing to see this done the right way. The horse never broke a sweat (which if she were really scared she would have), she was unsure at times but never in a panicked state, if she got scared or in a dangerous position you immediately let her back up, you were wonderful using the pressure and release method, you kept 100% calm and collected throughout the entire process. I think so many people have seen this done the wrong way that the subject has become way more controversial than it would be otherwise. Unfortunately there are too many jackasses out there making this process look horrific and barbaric because whatever the hell they're doing (whatever it is it isn't beneficial) is horrific and barbaric when it in no way needs to be.

I think this is a very helpful video. I personally have a 12 year old horse who used to be a racehorse, and I don't have much of a back story on him. All I know is that he was restarted, and said to be a lesson horse. With him overstepping his boundaries, I'm not sure how true that story is. Anyways, he is great to ride in an arena, but he is new to trails. Only problem is, he is pushy. He thinks he is the boss, and he has shown aggression, as in he will "come at you" while you lunge him. He also has a bucking issue. He doesn't like for you to be first, he thinks he is. I believe that possibly laying him down will be a good thing for him. He needs to known that I am in control. I've always heard growing up that if you can get a horse to lay down, you can get that horse to do anything for you. Although, I would like to try this without ropes, I believe a horse with his strength and energy, would need ropes. I'm not sure if you still read these comments Ty, but do you have anything to add? Or maybe another idea on how to gain his ultimate respect? I understand that I have to go back to the basics with him, and I do honestly think that after he and I really gain respect on the ground as much as possible, it would be best to try and lay him down, and go from there. I have never laid a horse down before, but I have years of experience owning and working with all different levels of horses, so I believe I have a good idea of what I'm talking about.

+Racheal Bruzgulis Hi Racheal,, In reading about your horse, i don't believe that laying him down right now is the answer, i think getting back to the basics, and schooling him on the ground would be first,, and as far as bucking? does he, do it when asked to canter? just out of no where? etc.. if its just on one thing that makes him buck, then it could be a Chiropractic issue, and laying down should be the last if all fails. I hope all works out for you and your horse,,, please keep us posted... Thank you...

+Ty Nitti I've had him checked out from head to toe, and between the vet, farrier, and dentist, they all agree that he's prefectly healthy. i didn't mean to make it sound like he's uncontrollable. he's a sweetheart really. he just needs to learn who's boss, and I've tried some different ground methods for an extended period of time, and i haven't seemed to get anywhere. thats why i was wondering if maybe this method would help. thanks.

You presented the video in a very good way, one thing you did not mention is when prey animals are taken down by a preditor/or human, there is a reflex to stop them from experiencincing fear and pain (from preditorial attack). Your video does not qualtify the horse being aggressive (I'm Ok with that, but the horse doe appear to be tranquilized) even still, you did a good job w/video, I'd be interested to know who you have trained with and provide info. Laying a horse down can break through to some or merely cause them to become catatonic and when they do wake up...watch out. I trained for many years at the track and was always a little "ouuta the box". I cross trained off track with some and had some "half psychos" my horses ran well and they were physically well cared for...some/many neeeded to be in "other jobs" pleased to say I moved many on early "even before they were tried" I love my TB's and and OTTB's....they are not for everyone. They are bred to be sensitive, honest, and giving...(not to the point of all giving) currently retired from race training...mostly light and classical dressage now.

Good demonstration. This is a safe technique to use for any horse. I've been laying down horses for over 40 years and I have never had anything but excellent results. The US Calvary used this technique as well as trainers well respected trainers like John Rarey and Jesse Berry. It could be dangerous and it is not something that most people can handle, so get an experienced professional trainer to do it for you.

So take the video for what it's worth. Use it, or don't. I know the arguments will never stop, and there are decent points on both sides, but seriously...this is an FYI video, not a video advocating laying every horse on the planet down so we can ride them. Sheesh!

This man quite obviously loves horses and is ONLY looking out for the horses best interests. What most folks don't stop to realize is that a horse can do a lot of damage to themselves and to the handler if proper horse handling isn't practiced, and Ty is giving an example of expert horse handling to reduce risk of injury and gain the confidence and trust of this animal.

That's was brilliantly done. I spent many years with a Gaucho who occasionally had to lay a horse down because of aggressive behaviour. To do it you really do need a very high degree of skill and ability and I would 100% agree with all of the personal safety aspects and techniques. I've seen a number of aggressive horses helped by very similar methods. If you don't know or understand the significance of what you are doing ... get an expert. Don't forget.. not every aggressive horse can be turned round..

@WachdByBigBrother, thanks for your support. @Cholan1972 is actually the man speaking & handling the horse in the video; I was the one behind the camera. You're very correct in everything you've said, and your thoughts are a welcome sight. Just like you said: it's not advocating lying every horse down, just the ones where no lesser means have worked. It's a training tool in the toolbox, not one you should use on every horse. Glad you learned something from the video. Thanks again!

Best vid I have seen on the sugject. Good, solid, clear, wise info all along. If only I could have seen it before trying it out on one of mine this Summer I would have gone faster and straighter to it. In the end I found it easier to have the lead coming in from the opposite side of his face and over his neck to my hand. Pulling gently but continuously he went down and lied down all in one move. As with everything else, depends on the horse. More vids?Thank you, good luck!

I appreciate the aspect of not doing it unless it is a severe situation. Had a colt born on the farm and not allowed to develop any bad habits. Unfortunately his adolescent games were not severe enough to justify this understanding. .

Well done video. The mare was smart little lady and thought out what was going on, which made the instructional easier. However the patience of the trainer was great in a way as I can see transfering it to a more spastic horse.

look people are saying this is nasty, but its not! this is how i lie my horse down, i only did it becuase my horse was getting nasty, and i have done it before! i have tried several ways of lying a horse down and i stand by this guy, if you know what your doing then you are being safe, its people that think they know what there doing that hurt a horse, my horse and I have a great bond and i got him at 16 with trust issues, because of lying him down hes soo much better, and i think this is great no matter what you all say becuase if you have a very nervous horse this is the easiest way of doing it! :) xx

You don't need any ropes to lay down a horse. And it can be a friendly and loving act. It does not have to be an issue of submission, it has to be an issue of friendly coercion. If your horse is fighting you you are doing something very wrong.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I was amazed at how well the mare responded after her attitude adjustment. This is common in NH circles, but I didn't understand the benefit for aggressive animals. Will it work on donkeys? It is second nature for them to go down.

Hi DanD for the record I have had horses my whole life and I currently own 12. I also rescue horses and train horses and I don't follow 'trends'. Also watch the movie My Friend Flicka from the 60s, the father talked about ideas of natural horsemanship, its been a round for a long time. Take a look at the likes & dislikes in this video, a lot of people dislike it. I agree that the technique being used is correct, I just don't agree that you need to do this to an aggressive horse.

Never seen a horse laid down like that before! Nicely done and don't listen to the people knocking you! Everyone has their own way of doin things and this works for you. One more thing-- If the horse was 'scared' and 'terrified' why would she follow him afterward? Do some research before you start bashing methods.
