Having an insulated 4th layer limits flexibility - having a 2nd insulation layer under her down jacket and a non-insulated hard shell as a 5th layer will give her more options, if e.g. it rains on warmer days or if she’s working really hard in rain. This will need her to buy a larger size down jacket. As noted by others, her clothes are too tight especially her 4th layer, which will compress her down jacket when zipped up, reducing its insulating properties. With her 4-layer system, her 4th layer needs to be larger than the one she’s chosen.

@Indiahikes2 жыл бұрын
Hi Avinash, If you are going any time when there is snow, you’ll need gloves to grip something or to steady yourself in snow. You also want the gloves to keep you warm. Get synthetic hand gloves that have waterproofing on the outside and a padded lining on the inside. If you find the combination difficult to get (not likely), wear a tight fitting fleece hand glove inside a synthetic hand glove. Hand gloves are mandatory on any Himalayan trek.

Ouch, you lost me at 1.25 when you said the "job of base layer is to keep you warm". Correct me if I'm wrong, base layers are for wicking sweat. Proving warmth is a secondary feature that can be derived from a thicker base layer.

Swathi!! Just let me know if this list of layers would suffice for a trek to Kedarkantha in MARCH. 1. A pair of thermal shirts and pants 2. 3 tshirts and 2 trek pants (including what I'll wear) 3. 1 tights for comfy purposes 4. 1 fleece and down jacket (without hood) 5. 1 wind jacket (is this mandatory?)
@swathichatrapathy93478 жыл бұрын
Hi Lekha those layers will be enough. And a wind-proof jacket is a must. The wind chill factor plays a huge role in making you feel much colder than it actually is. An insulated wind-proof jacket will definitely help.
@KingKsEDC5 жыл бұрын
Wait...ok base layer, then a mid layer aka insulation aka her fleece, then down jacket aka another insulating layer, then her outer layer which isnt just a shell, its an insulating jacket. Im no expert but is something wrong with this? Again maybe its just me being very new to this stuff, but she has 3 insulating layers? Isnt the point of the fleece and down to eliminate the need for a insulated outer layer?

Hi Swathi Please let me know if this list of layers would suffice for Goecha la Trek in late Sep early Oct. 1. A pair of thermal shirts and pants 2. A woolen sweater 4. 1 fleece 5. 1 wind jacket Do you think a Down Jacket is necessary ??
@swathichatrapathy93477 жыл бұрын
Hi Surjayan, these layers should suffice. You won't need a down jacket and a wind-proof jacket. I hope the wind-proof jacket is thick enough though! If it isn't insulated and thick, then take a down jacket. Also, make sure you carry gloves, a woollen cap and a balaclava to cover your neck. :)

Hi Tanvi if you have a good backpack cover, water-proof jacket and also water proof pants, you don't need a poncho. You can make do without it. But if you don't have any of these, take a poncho.
@ThanashyamRaj8 жыл бұрын
Would the other way around make good sense? I have a good Down jacket and a Poncho. Would I be needing the additional windproof jacket? Going for Sandakphu in Jan
@trippyturns8 жыл бұрын
Besides waterproofing, it must be remembered that cold winds are colder than a windless day and the former is to be found aplenty in the Upper Himalayas. A windproof jacket will keep you much insulated.
@swathichatrapathy93478 жыл бұрын
Hi Thanashyam you will still need a layer over the down jacket because you need something wind proof. Ponchos are not comfortable to trek with, so use them only if it is raining. When it isn't raining, you'll need a wind-proof jacket.
@IshaniMehta8 жыл бұрын

The only major difference from personal experience would be with the choice of base layer. For trekking, where I know during the day I'm actively moving, I want my base layer to not just be warm but also help keep me dry. So material that absorbs and quickly helps evaporate the sweat is ideal. Whereas if I'm just a student in canada, I wouldnt necessarily need material like merino wool there as I dont have to worry about a lot of sweating when I'm just walking to the subway or bus stand perhaps

Hi Akhil, Chadar is very very cold in February, with temperatures dropping to - 25 degrees. You'll need at least 7 layers to tackle this kind of cold. Double up on sleeping bags. Double up on gloves, you could use two pairs of gloves -- woollen and synthetic gloves. Scarf, woollen cap, woollen socks, all of these are a must.

Actually 10-15°C is not that cold while trekking as your body heats up and you will even sweat to some extent especially on your back as the backpack provides good insulation to your back. What you need to actually take care of, is you your "extremities"; the hands, the legs your nose and your ears. Wear a woollen cap or balaclava that covers your ears and wear warm woolen socks and woollen or synthetic gloves. Also cover your nose with the balaclava or monkey cap. Breathing cold mountain air could land you in trouble. Keep your chest warm by wearing 2-3 layers of warm clothes as mentioned in this video. Insulate yourself. Avoid cotton as it saps body heat and in turn your energy.
