How to learn a language WITHOUT studying

I have a little strategy on my own that kind of correlates to this. I will listen to 1 Pimsleur lesson a day up until 10 days and then repeat the lessons all over again starting from 1. So basically 1-10, then repeat 1-10 again. Then 10-20 and then repeat 10-20 again. It helps so much going through everything again

1. have a base to understand (rickety languages) 2. listen and understand the fist time 3. listen multiple times 4. read a lot (in your level) 5.read stuff in the same subject (narrow reading)

I've been learning French for the past month and a half, about 30 to 45 min per day and have been using "comprehensible input." Essentally, it is listening to stories, but not stories full of advanced words you don't understand, but fun/funny children's stories. I tell ya, I can go through an entire 20 minute children's story and I legit understand 90% of it after two weeks. I'm remembering words, phrases, etc., and I'm not doing any flash cards, studying etc. Literally just watching/reading/listening to children's stories. I progress by listening to stories each time that are only slightly above my comprehension level. I love the comprehensible input method because it isnt complicated and it works. I'm super excited about it and I am shocking myself by how I'm retaining these words. I must say too that I am in my 40's and have no prior french experience. Anyway. Thought you all might be interested in this method (again, comprehensible input).

it's been one and a half years since I have extensively been doing this method apart from the number of years that I put into it during my school years. but I still can't understand native speakers clearly. I think repetitive listening worked best for you because you had acquired a strong baseline of the language during those school years that were inactive back then, so the method just helped you activate those stuff.

but wait a minute you speak english too as a native wow so great that means like you used to live language , Not just doing the three things you mentioned in the video, how does it take brother to be in this level ? Is that depending on how many time you spend in the three things you said ?

If I just listen to one thing then another after following this pattern it will take a hundred years to get through various recordings.

There are very very few books in beginner books in Tagalog. There are just children's books. Those who read 2000 hours in storytelling complained about the words being uncommon. Tagalog in the Philippines is a nightmare.

How many times do you listen to podcasts in total? 10-30-100 times? What is the average length of each podcast?

on the point of classes, this point is often harped on by KZbin language influencers (not you Lois) how they never remembered anything from their HS class... just as a disingenuous "comparison" to shill their own product... but it's like... take any HS kid... and any class... and ask them how motivated/excited they are really to learn... like HONESTLY... it's all just a game of passing, moving on, and forgetting what you learned. ofc you wont remember your 10th grade spanish like you don't remember anything from your 10th physics class. I think language schools pump out quite a bit of high level speakers. out of the many high level speakers i've run across in Japan, there were 1-2 outliers that got lucky with some opportunities (living from an early age or such) and an overwhelming majority that got it from language classes at language school.

Language cannot be learnt by studying however it can be obtained by using.

Thank you for the video, Lois. I am currently on rocket french level 1 and have still quite a lot of studying to do until I reach rocket languages level 3 which is your baseline to learn a language without studying. And while rocket languages are very comprehensive, I percieve them as a bit grammar heavy (5 out of 9 lessons per module are usually grammar). The grammar heavy part can be a tedious journey at times which kept me from progressing for example once I encountered module 5 with all the different pronouns. Now on module 6 there are even more. I almost stopped, kept going with my anki cards build from selected material from the course, but was soooooo tired from grammar. I wonder how to make this journey less tedious and more fun? Can learning the grammar be more fun in any way? I love the conversational parts, the interactive audio, the mocked conversations one can have ... but the grammar ... yikes! Doesn't want to enter my brain, not with ease for sure ;-) Any advice on that? Sincerely Armin

This is a painful but necessary part of learning French. Just keep in mind that the grammar that you'll learn in Rocket French will cover pretty much everything you'll ever need to know as far as French grammar. You most likely won't need to bother with it in the future.

@@loistalagrand yeah, I know ... its unavoidable 😉 I'm trying to find ways to make it less "painfull" not to lose motivation. I usually do something conversational, like the mocked conversations in the courses or in "play the part".

Hello by baseline do you mean completing all 3 levels of Rocket language (Spanish in my case) and having proficiency at the 3rd level or could the suggestions in this video work for someone closer to level one or two in Rocket Spanish? Thank you

I think Pimsleur is better in SRS / repetition….I have both Pimsleur and Rocket Spanish….Rocket is more extensive but the repetition/SRS is sub par… with Pimsleur it sticks even years after….

True. Rocket needs to be used in combination with something like Anki.

Comprehensible input is an important part of any language learning program. However, I feel like lots of influencers have been focusing on comprehensible input way too much (probably following Krashen). The truth is, there is scientific evidence in favor of other types of language learning activities, such as output, or fluency training.

It really depends on how much time you invest. 3-6 months if you're dedicated. 1-2 years if you're more casual. Some people never reach the baseline because they aren't serious about it.
