Completely agree with you and I've also had this thought for quite a while about learning(esp Chinese) with songs but couldn't organize and explain it simply since I am not a content creator. Your explanation is great and very well structured. I will just recommend this video to anyone who needs it instead of explaining it myself😂

I kind of built up my interest in Chinese because of Huang xiaoyun. It was born because of Soul Land, but I still have phrases from 我们的爱 and 你的答案 in my Google translate phrasebook.

I was just searching up Chinese songs yesterday for learning lol. Mostly to familiarize myself with how Chinese sounds since I'm a complete new beginner, still can't count to ten lol. It's fun discovering great singers in Chinese! Just realized, 我们的爱 by Fir was my first ever favorite Chinese song as a young girl and the only one but I had no interest in Chinese back then 😆

I am learning Mandarin and Rain in Shanghai by Zhang Zhehan has helping me remember a lot of theme words, as you said! Like rain, wind, seasons, storm... It is so much fun to make the connection between the characters, the song and other places where I've hard them! This video is great, thank you

Any song by Li Jian 李健 is good as he has a great voice, sings great melodies, clearly, and he usually provides the characters and pinyin with his KZbin videos. 一切刚刚好 “Just Right” has all the classic ingredients of a romantic Chinese song, rain, smoke curling from kitchen chimneys, green hills, flowers, tinkling mountain streams, birds chirping …

When learning japanese i decided to sentence mine my favorite songs, putting every word I didn't know in my anki cards and it made learning vocabulary a breeze, super easy and super entertaining

The other day I made a sing-along translation of 阳光彩虹小白马 (yes, that song 😅) and I also wrote down the pinyin because I wanted to learn the song after hearing it. I remember having to say the characters a lot. When I tried to sing them, I'd forget the tones before I could write them down 😄 *Note:* I'm a black guy from the Caribbean. I just got curious after seeing it mentioned on FB, but it's such a good song once you listen to it, it's been stuck in my head all week 😂 (Not advocating for anyone to go make misunderstandings with English speakers though. Do be mindful of context 👍)

Spent the whole morning listening to chinese songs without untherstanding a word excepting. wo, ni, shi juan, yi ge ren and all those but still watching these videos religiously. Loving your new hair btw. Really looks good on you! :) P. S. the honored guest blew out my mind. Very powerful melody, amazing vocals and very moving lyrics. I can't think of a western song singing from that point of view. Really loved it. So, thanks!

Great videos, Andrew! Some of the songs I like include anything by 周深, he sings beautifully, 大鱼is the one I like the most (also because of the movie it was made for). Also some of the classics, like 慢慢喜欢你,朋友,小幸运,那些年

Also, in some songs, the intonation is ignored when they sing to make it sound better, and also because they assume that the listeners can still understand what is spoken.

If it weren't for music I would have never learned English in the first place. ;) And I'm learning Chinese just because of music again. My five cents (and I may be a little insistent on this 😬): hip hop is good for sentences, vocabulary, and tones. Phrases are really long (tell me about it), and since it's like almost speaking tones are the most closer to the real ones. Cons: too fast. :P Even with the lyrics I can't keep track of the singing. :'( But I keep reading the lyrics anyway because the music is soooo good. 😍

I learned English by listening to songs and as far as I wonder, it's a good fit for our learning process but when it comes to Mandarin Chinese. No, it's not for me, I'll pass. I'd rather do shadowing from a podcast instead of listening to songs. English was the only language that I have learned from songs. Spanish was the one that I had to do immersion in because my bf is a Spanish speaker. Hebrew is because of my parents, they are from Israel. However, whenever I tried to replicate the same strategy of listening to as many songs as I could in order to learn the ropes around the language. I failed miserably. So, for each new language, I search for a different way how to approach it, and using podcasts works like a charm.

@@CanalSDR I'm not saying I'm learning from music. I could learn English from music once I already knew enough of the language to do it, and I'm not learning too much Chinese either yet (I know very little by now). What I was trying to say is that because of music I started learning languages. It's my main motivation to do it. :) And eventually. it helps me to learn more of the language and especially the culture, which is imperative to learn in order to understand how Chinese language works.

Hello my 'pen' friend - I liked you previous review of pens and how they function with calligraphy and even bought the one you rated most highly:-) Not that I was that impressed in the end:-) The one I use normally is 'impact' - such a great name! Mostly, it feels that you are expressing the obvious, but you add some interesting content in the links you offer here - for those of us, working at translating songs:-). So, yes, you are adding value progressively. Keep up the good work but focus more on quality than quantity: your learning experience is what counts, I reckon, and helps people to relate to you and the content you are creating. You got a comment from me, which shows you are on the right track - in my humble opinion.

@@ABChinese The problem may not be with the pen but me:-) I changed the angle of the pen and noticed that it works better now. Always looking at ways to assimilate Chinese: affirmations at present:-) I'll look to see if you have covered that approach...:-)

I also love any song by velvet-voiced Zhao Peng. Try Olive Tree gǎn lǎn shù 《橄榄树》“Olive Tree” (from the 1979 film “Your Smiling Face”…..also that song, huān yán, made famous again by Zhou Shen, originally sung by Chyi Yu) Bùyào wèn wǒ cóng nǎlǐ lái 不要问我从哪里来 Don’t ask me where I’m from Wǒ de gùxiāng zài yuǎnfāng 我的故乡在远方 My homeland lies far away….

I have a question - do you mind listen to a few of A-Lin songs and could you please tell me if these are good enough to learn some "parts" of Chinese from? Cause I love her very much, I like listening to her songs and I'd like to know if they are good for learning too!! Thank you, keep doing as you do :)

The biggest problem I have with trying to learn Mandarin with songs is that the typical Chinese Pop song is rather boring to me. I'm just not a fan of the sappy ballad that is typical of Chinese Pop music. And I struggle to find anything that I find interesting.
