Youre probably the perfect person to ask about this. I graduated with bachelors in Computer Science and know absolutely nothing about the whole industry of Data Science. But instead of becoming a traditional software developer/ software engineer, im thinking of getting into the data science field. So as someone with 0 years of experience and wants to get my foot in the door in the field of Data Science as my first job after college, what is the most entry level job(s) that someone like me can start applying to?? I dont care about the money so if its a really entry level/ junior low paying job thats perfectly fine i just want to get a job that will be a stepping stone onto more advanced data science jobs later in life. You’ll probably want to apply to Data Analyst or Business Analyst roles. Once you land a role, get that company to pay for a masters. Also, see if you can work on some data science projects at work as well. This is coming from someone who is currently a Data Scientist with a BS in CS like yourself

The question is though, how can you learn domain knowledge to become an entry-level data scientist in that field? I heard that knowledge about the industry is important but realistically, you would have to apply to basically as many companies as possible regardless of domain/sector to acquire that entry-level role. And the most stressful thing about this process is that for an entry-level, we know nothing about each domain. We only know the technical skills and not the particular business. So to become an entry-level data scientist, how did you prepare for non-technical stuff? Like if you applied to a retail company, do you have to know about that industry (like do they ask you such questions about retail knowledge)? Or is just knowing technical things enough for entry-level? The domain aspect is really giving me a hard time because while I can learn the technical things given time, I can't learn all the finance, retail, marketing, and tech knowledge that would be extremely overwhelming. I am pretty sure that the Astrophysics major didn't help you learn those business domains so I would love to hear your advice on how the entry-level application process is like (whether they test you on domain knowledge of their industry), and how you prepared for that to get a job.

is there a way to get a data science intern role where the recruiters don't give a huge weightage to the leetcode side of things? the reason I ask this is to get me some breathing room for making projects and learning data science concepts better and gradually build leetcode competency for my full time job interviews that are coming after atleast 8 months from today

So LeetCode hasn't been a part of every interview I've done, but it does show up I'd say 50% of the time. If it's an expectation, I'd recommend just picking one or two LeetCode easy problems to work on every few days. If those are difficult, then I'd recommend really just trying to analyze the question from scratch (psuedocode the answer in English, and try to move that over to python line by line).

Hey! Thanks so much for watching. :) I actually got hired at Nielsen, which is a very large company! I was with Nielsen for 2 years, and then got hired at my current start-up. I learned a lot at a larger company regarding Machine Learning, business application, how to structure my work, etc. and that helped me a lot for my current start-up work. I'd recommend going to a start-up once you feel confident about your foundational data science skills because it's a LOT of experimental work building things from scratch, and it's more intense since many components in the Data Science team depend solely on you. At Nielsen, we had 500+ data scientists, but at Drizly, we have only 6 so we have a lot more responsibility! If you do feel confident though about going to a start-up, I'd recommend checking out AngelList! That's how I found a bunch of start-ups to apply to. :)

pretty much all data science interview experience I've seen they say that step 1 is leetcode medium problems and I'm having a hard time with easy leetcode problems itself. that combined with internship finding deadline by first week of may 2023 for me makes everything so much difficult because learning leetcode and working on projects at the same time and coursework for data science is a lot to do. any tips on that ?

I'd recommend checking out Ace the Data Science interview for help on pattern recognition for LeetCode! I'd strongly recommend brushing up on python basics prior to even attempting LeetCode since that platform is mostly about data structures and algorithms. Also, pro tip, for LeetCode, don't work on any software engineering work, just focus on Algorithms Easy LeetCode questions (those are usually very relevant to data science).

Thank you, your content is really😊Helpful, you said enough from all the buckets. What about Deep learning? PyTorch/ TensorFlow. The project that I make mostly contain Python, pandas, Data viz, Modeling(including Feature engineering, preprocessing, Tuning, DR….all of that) and demonstrating the business problem. If applying for an entry level DS, Do I need to make projects that includes just the needed Deep learning Algos and libraries cuz the minimum qualifications ask for that?

I think that if you're applying for an entry-level job, you definitely don't need to have any deep learning work. Many entry-level jobs wont have you doing complex Machine Learning work right off the bat - in my experience, there was more data analysis, data exploration, and basic regressions/classifications at least in the first few months! A company asking deep learning questions in an entry-level interview might not be the best place because deep learning isn't entry level haha

I'm a DS specialising in ML. And yes, a degree has more worth than a bootcamp. A DS degree accomplished from college or university also shows your future interviewers that you did some projects and internship(s) to get your degree. In another words, you proved yourself being a capable DS cause DS are not cheap.
