I want to learn Greek. At 41, I thought I was too old to start learning something that intense, but I was inspired by my brother-in-law in his mid 50s, who recently picked it up, and proved to me that you're never too old to better yourself!

Right on! I’m a year older and struggled thinking that too & only recently after losing a son & nearly passing away myself decided to step out & start investing in myself so I can put in more work for the kingdom. Haven’t started the languages yet but I plan to soon. Nice to know I’m not the only one. God bless you on your journey, brother!

I taught myself Greek at 50. It took me 3 months to learn the Grammar and am now reading the Greek New Testament. If I had known it would take me only 3 months to learn Greek, I would have done it in my twenties, but the options to self teach Greek were harder because there were no teaching videos.

You put out a review of the Koren Tanakh and showed off Exodus chapter 15 which really floored me with the beauty of that poetry. I later took an old testament surevey class which really solidified my interest in mastering Hebrew. I have been trying to learn myself with mixed success but wish to continue (so I love when you recommend self teaching resources). Thank you!

ive learned recently a few things, the verse i recall" study yourself...not one word or markings will pass" makes me think he must be talking about a physical book or scrolls , and at that time was the septuagint, why is this important? because the masoritic text differs from it, and the dead sea scrolls alligns more with the septuagint, heres the issue i myself find as im american, only one person has translated the greek to english and its no longer in circulation(print on demand is only option)i find all the rest under the masoritic text, even the vatican has switched from its latin to the masoritic text, king james, when i find the sources and the reason behind specific translations, they all differ from the LXX, now im not speakin of the french or german translations, but again, what did barclay translte from to make his greek? and why do so many label bibles as from the septuagint when there a mixture of masoritic and other non greek sources, brenton states its from the latin or vulgate, its as if all has swayed away from the one text we ought to know is "a perfect translation"the original LXX, but is it the same as what we have today ?is the question, just a thought on history, hey thank you for this video

I also speak other three languages and I totally agree with you, no matter what language you use, translation is difficult to do word for word, it’s almost impossible. I used to teach the Bible in Spanish, and also in Italian and there obviously some challenges. I also speak some Portuguese and own a Portuguese Bible too. Thank you for putting out this information. @@DiscipleDojo My kids were using that for a time. I haven’t used it for Greek, but for Spanish, they do have sentences that reflect their worldview such as a female doing something with “her wife”. Might not be a deal-breaker for adults, but Christian parents may want to be aware of that if it’s something they want to discuss with their kids.

Any thoughts on learning Koine Greek vs Classical Greek? How far apart are they? I ask, as a knowledge of some kind of ancient Greek would also help to translate Plato, Sophocles and other classics of ancient literature - which I would also find interesting... So is Koine Greek going to help you with these texts as well as biblical texts? or is Classical Greek a better starting point if you have a broader interest? Just discovered this channel and I am learning lots of interesting things... Merry Christmas!

From my understanding, Koine is somewhat simpler than Classical Greek. Perhaps similar to how British English in the 1700s compares to modern American English you'd hear at a gas station. (I'm sure that's not entirely correct and my Greek speaking viewers are welcome to correct me, but this is the stereotype I was taught.)

I am looking for good Bible studies that take a language based approach, within cultural context. “Lost in translation” by Eitan Bar is pretty good, but I’m hungry for more. He is Jewish/ Christian/ Israeli , so he has some of the cultural heritage that we are missing here in the west. Language is so closely linked to culture, so I think it’s really important to make those cultural connections, especially since now we have all the resources to do so. Just curious if you’ve stumbled across any good native Hebrew speaking Bible scholars, ideally Scholars from Israel/ Middle East? Thank you for making this channel. When you want to read New Testament in the closest you can get to the first scriptures, then you go with koine which is ancient Greek. Nowadays the most we use in our Churches is a variety of Greek called καθαρεύουσα (katharevousa) which means "cleaned" It is a mix form of modern Greek (dimotiki) and ancient Greek. The New Testament we use mostly its from Neofytos Vamvas a Greek Orthodox Priest. So if you want to go with the one almost all of our churches uses and is the closest to the first texts you go with katharevousa

FWIW, I started with the free resources. I still say that there is probably no more enjoyable way to learn Biblical Hebrew than with Aleph with Beth. That couple is awesome! Even my kids have learned from them and laughed out loud watching their skits. If you check out their website, you can find free interactive quizzes, a schedule, etc. which helps to make it a little more interactive. Biblingo is great too (I’m about 12 weeks in), but I’m glad I started with Aleph with Beth as a more gentle entry point. If you’re watching the lesson videos that Biblingo puts out, it feels more like jumping into the deep end of the pool. It’s great, but I think it helps to be prepared for what you’re getting into. If you think about how we naturally learn languages, we don’t learn formal grammar until we have been thoroughly immersed the language for a season. We learn to label what we’ve already intuitively picked up. I think that approach makes a lot of sense, personally.

I’ve heard mixed things from folks about which language is easier. My personal experience was that Hebrew was easier for me to pick up which isn’t what I was expecting. It’s a simpler language, IMO. Greek has the advantage of having a more familiar alphabet and some vocab that’s easy to assimilate since some of our words are derived from it, but it is a lot more complex. Both are quite doable, but I felt like Greek was more of an uphill battle, personally. But I’ve heard others say they found Greek easier, so it will be interesting to see what your experience is. :)

Hallo Brother. I don’t want to make you sad, but the program you use making false announcement of the words it teaches you, the word it uses its right, the way its written its right but the way how it speaks it its complete wrong.

There are 4 different pronunciation systems in Biblical Greek. The one in this video may be one you are unfamiliar with.

@@DiscipleDojo brother what unfamiliar? Im Greek and i can read and pronounce it right, and the way this program pronounced it its wrong, anyway, i think your main goal its to read it and to understand it, and there you doing a great job 👏 but when your focus is to also speak it, i would advice you to spend some time within a Greek Community, for example there are orthodox churches in the Us, there you will find people where you can speak with, specially the priests are fluent in ancient Greek.

Yes, you are referring to modern spoken Greek. Just like English sounded different 500 years ago, Greek sounded different 2,000 years ago than it does today, and the Greek in Greece was pronounced different from the Greek in Persia, Egypt, or Judea...just as English today is pronounced different in England, Liberia, Australia, and America. The program has modern Greek as an option, but also 3 other systems of pronunciation that people can choose to learn from different periods in history (one of which--Erasman--was never actually spoken by native speakers).

@@DiscipleDojo whatever, when you think you learn Greek properly with that program, then try to speak to a person what this program teaches you, literally no one will understand you or in best case will have very hard time. And this will be not because of the different pronunciation as you say, but because of this program do it in a wrong way. An native speaking Greek person would teaching you differently the same words. And stop explaining to me my language wich a grow up with my whole live, and im surrounded by it all the time. Good luck

Here's a question that no one discusses. When is Jesus Christ's REAL birthday? We know that it isn't December 25th; Constantinople chose that date to harmonize with the existing pagan traditions. I've heard that we think Jesus's real birthday is in September. What if it's on Yom Kippur? That makes sense, the holiest day of the year to the Hebrews. Any thoughts on His original birthday? Merry Christmas!
