This is interesting because I info dump the move/skill of the day almost immediately after we break out into drilling. I can only ever remember what move I want to do.

jiujitsu is unlike any other martial art. you don't get a blackbelt in shotokan karate if you know 99% of shotokan karate; you must know it all. in jiujitsu, nobody "knows it all", no one is expected to, and those that claim to are generally mistaken. the secret to jiujitsu is focus you training on the techniques that work best for YOU. not all moves are ideal for all ages, body types, or level of flexibility. find what works for you & hone it to perfection.

Great perspective! Love hearing it. Unpopular opinion: I feel as though belts are given prematurely and stripes should have more significance (ex. purple 1 stripe should be clearly less good than purple 2 stripe). Also, too many black belts. (Humble white belt talking here, haha). Whats your take on this?
@DennisHaydenJr3 жыл бұрын
What would determine a purple 2 stripe vs 1. A tournament? A test? Who would be the gate keeper for the stripe? Do we have a purple 3 stripe on stand by to test everyone? I am not sure how you would enforce stripes when the act of even getting to purple is so rare.

@@DennisHaydenJr I used purple as an example, but as with any other belt promotion, the black belt thats promoting would ideally have a more kean sense of the slight progressions being made. In terms of what determines progression, ideally competition and judges would help that categorization, but since were not there yet, at least having a more precise curriculum similar to schooling would be more effective. (again this is just a theory im interested in exploring. Idk much im just a 3stripe white belt, what ever that means)

In my gym it's two mind sets if the person your with is a white belt let them drill, but the blues and purples always go off else where and work on "secret Jiu-Jitsu s***"

Open mats are a good setting. I like Renzo Gracie’s mindset where he lets his students try moves as long as they’re effective.
