This is straight up the way I have come to pass, but I have never really put it together consciously before watching this video. When I struggle its because I am getting stubborn in a direction or because my opponent is good enough to force me in a direction of their choosing (or ahead of me in addressing what direction I am trying to go). For me ... this is the best passing video I have ever seen - period.

I came to this same conclusion around purple belt years ago. Teaching this concept is one of my favorite lessons. I almost describe it the same way. IMO, understanding this concept is a fundamental principle of Jiu Jitsu. This is a very important lesson for lower belts. I really hope blue belts and purple belts are paying attention.
@bobbydavies70244 жыл бұрын
Christopher Pena important for white belts too?
@adamisforgiants67624 жыл бұрын
It in Judo also. Happo No Kuzushi, eight points of unbalancing. It's a similar idea, but for throws instead of passes and sweeps. I bet wrestlers do something similar.
@MangyBat4 жыл бұрын
Not saying you can't learn this at white belt but white belt is typically about learning to survive and defend, doing basic chokes and armlocks. Also, some simple passes usually on the knees. You can't build a house without a foundation. The passing idea Keenan presents here is more like the first floor of the house not the foundation. It's a fundamental idea in Jiu Jitsu; it just takes some time to understand. Just my opinion. Keenan could have a difference in opinion on where this belongs. It's not wrong to start to implement it as soon as you can understand it. Probably depends on skill level. For me, it was purple belt.

Jiu-jitsu, judo, aikido are about that flow, up and down, left and right, forward and backward, and combinations…… using directional lines and switching them at will once you encounter an obstacle, not ramming through them, and at the same time creating enough obstacles for your opponent so he/ she can no flow fluently while you do it…. Very good explanation from someone who clearly master the concept… this is what all successful fighters do in any combat sport, even if they don’t know it, they instinctively do it…

Brazilians love being visual in their actions, westerners enjoy the methodology. Here Keenan breaks jujitsu back down to its pure martial principles; which much like military strategy= Up/down Left/tight Forward/backward Push/pull Centreline Full/empty Most martial artists beyond “black belt” seek softer styles in search for this true meaning because their teachers in harder styles don’t understand what their teaching

awesome keenan, i love this fundamental concepts approach. there is a philosopher called ken wilber who has mapped reality into a famous model called AQAL, All Quadrants, All Lines. check it out, it shows how everything in reality has an external and an internal dimension and a collective and an individual dimension, creating four quadrants. any phenomena in reality can be shown in terms of it's holarchy, (integrated heirachy), and what it correlates with in the other other quadrants. shitty explantaion, but that's why he made AQAL. It took him 20 years to see how everything fits which saves one from having to have doctorate in 20+ disciplines to understand reality in it's complexity and wholeness

It's a cultural thing. A video of this quality (much respect to Keenan -this instructional is of Danaher's level) and I'm referring to the ability to TEACH/COMMUNICATE can only be produced by an educated mind. Most Brazilian black belts from the old school can't teach... they would just smile and tell you to practice and practice...and practice. Just repetition.. Danaher saved me years on the mats...
