Be patient, persistent... and have fun! Advice that will help: Dont have fluency as the only goal... But make every step taken towards it also a goal. It feels so rewarding when understanding a new concept, word or grammatical rule if you have them all as goals along the way. Even if fluency is far away.

I’m a new learner and I’ve spent about a month now on level 1... I’ll probably be another few weeks at least before I move on to level 2 because I figured out from my experience learning Spanish that if you don’t have a firm grasp of the basics, everything else is going to be even more difficult to really absorb and incorporate into your life. To me, you can’t really think about it as “learning” Korean until you start “LIVING” Korean, in other words... make it a point (no matter what level you’re at) to constantly ask yourself “how would I say that in Korean?”. Also, as has been pointed out a million times, surround yourself with the language. Listen to TTMIK podcasts, watch videos, listen to music. Read. Write. Do whatever you can to live the language and a point 현웃씨 made in a video a few years ago has helped me a lot. Keep a journal. Even if it’s as simple as mine currently is, write a word. Make a sentence with it. Expand on that sentence as your vocabulary grows... it really helps and my confidence is growing as my vocabulary increases also!

I don’t want to fall into the “paralysis by analysis” trap either. Like most areas of life, avoiding the edges and staying in the middle is the way to go.

When I first learned Korean I think what helped me the most was your second tip to put new words in context sentences! I just did this because it was more fun, but I think it’s why I improved much more quickly than my peers. The flashcard boxes oh my god, I used to do the same thing when i was in high school learning french. Of course now I’ve migrated to anki as well (i struggled a lot at first and almost gave up on the program but it was ultimately worth it). I’m now learning korean and chinese simultaneously and i find it really rewarding when I can remember grammar points, vocabulary or characters by reviewing just a few days later. Frustration is like poison for language learning, especially when it makes you feel like there’s something wrong with you for not being able to remember even simple things. Thank you for the advice! Repetition and revision are really the best tools if immersion is not a possibility.

All my TTMIK sample sentences (plus sentences from other places), are in Anki. Not just the words. And they are there for both sides of the card (English to Korean, and Korean to English). That way my grammar review is automatically part of my daily word and language practice. Another tip is DON'T write the English part of the card in perfect English sentences!! You don't need perfect English for this. Your native language is really just a tool to initially get meaning, as briefly as possible. In my view, from the moment you learn a new Korean word/phrase/expression, you are effectively trying to leave English behind, so to speak. Also, I find that the LITERAL meaning is MUCH more valuable than the perfect English translation. It helps you understand the grammar when you see it used in other different ways. It helps get the word order into your head. It actually helps you learn other related words because you have the literal meaning in your head instead of some very rough (and often unhelpful) English translation. For example, "그렇지만" isn't exactly "but" - it kind of means "like that even though" and if you think of it like that, it works a LOT better than thinking of it as English "but". It also then helps you understand a lot of other closely related expressions. And perhaps most importantly, Korean English order helps to get your brain away from THINKING in English - that's the goal really. Write it in Korean-English, that is, re-order the words into Korean word order, eg "그가 저보다 더 잘 해요" on my card is written "(PL) He, I than, more well do." (PL -polite informal) on the English side. The commas denote the phrasing to help me understand the meaning. If I'm unsure that I will understand the actual meaning later, I can always put a literal meaning, "He is better than me at doing that" in the comments (but I very rarely need that - the Korean English word order is perfectly understandable). It takes you away from the whole 'missing subject' thing, where a Korean sentences can very ambiguously mean several very different English sentences (particularly with pronouns), so when I read a Korean ordered English from Anki, I immediately know that it can have several meanings depending on context - context that English defines in detail and Korean does not. I also use the tags to tell me where I got the words/phrases/sentences from, EG, this one is tagged "TTMIK_Lvl2_L21" in my Anki, so not only are all the language examples for each language point for each lesson together, if I need to I can always refer back to my lesson PDFs. Sometimes I get new language phrases or pieces from KZbin or elsewhere. When I do, I simply copy and past the URL into the comments field so that I can always go back and revisit something that I may be unsure about. This is particularly handy when you learn a new word that is similar in meaning to an older word. It's important to differentiate similar words asap. I always do that immediately, so that I can ensure that I learn the meanings as close as possible to the real Korean meanings. A few times I've had to relearn a word meaning precisely because of this. New words often change your understandings of old words, because Korean has a LOT more words that are situational than English does, I think. In English we reuse old words in new ways. Korean ancestors seem to have needed new and different words for different situations, lol, eg different words for 'wash' depending upon what you are washing. So I have to constantly rethink my understood definitions of Korean words! Whew!! :-)) One note, though...The Korean add-on for Anki is now broken. :-((( It broke a few months ago. The creator disappeared and despite pleas from users, no-one else took up the mantle and updated it. We now have to manually import sound files and Hanja (download, copy and paste), and it's very time-consuming. It's really sad, because it was a great add-on. Anki is still usable, but it's nowhere near as good as it was a few months ago.... :-(((((

tip for anyone learning with TTMIK: there are courses for all of the essential korean levels on Memrise!! so first i listen/read the lesson on TTMIK and write down notes about the grammar introduced, and then i use Memrise to memorise (duh) the vocabulary :)

Omg! I can't tell you how glad I am that I watched this video today. It helped me so much. For a long time I fehlt stuck and I didn't really know what to do. I wasn't making any progress and I didn't know how to go on with learning korean. After I watched this video I did what you said. I downloaded a Flashcard app and put in ALL vocabulary from the "My first 500 korean words" book. I realised that It helped so much to just Spend some time with the Korean language... And making some connections between the words and similar words.. I became more and more confident. And After that day of reviewing so many words and structures I found my Motivation again and somehow I feel like I understand korean even better. I am teaching Korean on the online platform and have the most student among Korean tutors. The more I taught Korean to my students, the more I realized that most people do not 복습 on their own. Since that time, I have tried to guide my students to do 복습 on their own, and it was so much worth it! Personally, I think when you learn something, not only language but also any subjects, having the time for 복습 is way more important than learning new things. I've just started using Quizlet and just reviewing every day to solidify words that just didn't stick in my free time. I was doing paper flashcards but I slowly realized that would be too much paper. Notebooks for notes isn't as bad because I like to write down some of the key points from each book and I feel like I remember just by the action of writing it down myself especially with sample sentences. It's satisfying to recognize a phrase and make it a new sentence by changing one or more words or a grammar point I just learned!

I agree with these types! I was studying Korean for a bit and stayed at the beginner level for a while...but after I started doing these I was able to reach conversational within a year!

If I study some new vocabulary or rules I really learn it so fast. I don't know why but my brain does it in amazing way. Of course you have to be realistic and put some realistic goals in a short and long time. The most important thing is enjoy the journey, that's the way I have learned so many languages.

Extensive reading. Read books! Thousand books, newspapers, magazines. The more the better. Translate in your target language and the other way around.

My repetition is by listening to kpop songs everyday and watching kdramas more often... First with the subtitles and then without. I'll be happy when I can absorb/learn what the other person is saying so I understand even better

There's this app called tandem that's great for doing language exchange. You can practice your Korean speaking and writing skills they will correct you. You can also send recordings. Give it a go. Super helpful.

now I know why I forget a lot of what I've studied. I used to finish a lesson from TTMIK then either start the next lesson or just close my notebook and review once after finishing 5 or more lessons.

I've been hoping for a level review option on TTMIK for so long! Thanks a lot for adding this feature, it will be super helpful! Being the kind of bottomless pit for input that language learners are, I hope there will be more review quiz kind of material like this in the future, to test our comprehension of all the lessons in different exercises. I guess that would probably be so much work to make though, so it's just a 그림의 떡 for now ;) Anyway, just wanted to let you know this type of material is highly appreciated!
