@@kachi9293I think it really depends on one's attitude towards the experiences. If you choose to see the negative, then that's what it will feel like. As humans everybody has this strange need to belong, to give everything an official label... I never understood it. I was born in Poland so I'm Polish, you're Icelandic as that's where you were born. However, that's only an answer to give when asked where we're originally from. I live in Ireland since I was a teenager, I feel more Irish than Polish, but not quite 100% that either. I studied in Turkey and felt more like myself there. I also study two more languages and hope to explore their culture as well. I personally like this mixed feeling. We don't need to be one thing or another just to satisfy somebody else's need for answers. There's nothing wrong in feeling like a mix of everything, to like one country, and a different language, to associate more with one thing than another... And yet, have this great gift of being able to speak multiple languages which also makes it possible to travel, converse, and discover more of yourself along the way. But you may need to take a look at your experience from a different perspective to notice and appreciate the positives and the opportunities you've been given, as well as the opportunities it created for your future. In this day and age I don't feel like there is a need to belong to one country or culture, it's so easy to travel, to learn and discover that I'd be happy to keep doing that for the rest of my life if I can as I find it exciting. But of course everyone has a right to feel differently. Some prefer to spread roots in one place, others not so much. The only thing I know is everyone has a choice... And that choice is to either live miserable or happy and grateful and use what life gives you to your advantage. I'm sure all those people in your life meant well, but maybe they could pay more attention to your needs. I wouldn't force my child to learn more than he's willing to himself or have any interest in it.

@@Devilishka7 I’m chiming in, if that’s ok 😊. It’s natural to feel “It’s a gift, embrace it. You can feel at home anywhere with ease because of having such an open and culturally diverse background”. Look at it with a positive mindset. That’s true but it all comes down to autonomy and self-determination. Learning new languages and immersing yourself into new cultures must be a choice. As a parent (and unfortunately this is the universal go-to approach) you project your own values, hopes and dreams onto your child. This is both conscious and subconscious and can sound like well-meant ideas like “well, this is your mom’s/dad’s ancestral language. This will benefit you.” “Play a sport. That’s healthy.” “Learn an instrument. It’s part of being a well-rounded individual.” We think we are being good parents but we are invalidating our child. Everything becomes conditional. Imposing is easier than confronting yourself with the reality which is “your child is their own person”. Why not let the child decide? Why does every Asian kid play at least one instrument? They all happen to be obsessed with violins and pianos?! Do all Korean kids in Germany happen to want to attend Saturday Korean lessons? Moving countries without consulting your child’s opinion or feedback is the epitome of selfishness, cruelty and peak invalidation! It’s letting the child know they really don’t matter and therefore have no say in it. I moved countries (across the Atlantic) and made sure my daughter was ok and equally positive about it. We made a promise that we would try it for one year and that she would get to decide if we stayed on or not. She was 8. Four years later, for health, safety and educational reasons, we had to move back to Europe. She was understanding and luckily also ready and homesick for Europe. Children don’t forget. Just like we don’t forget how our parents/people made us feel. I understand that some jobs (diplomats, missionaries etc) require families to constantly move around. However, I believe that even those moves can and should be discussed as a family with options of boarding schools or alternatives. Anything that would help empower the child. I guess what I’m trying to say is you are approaching languages from an autonomous approach, from the “parent’s” viewpoint. You choose. You are in charge. Kachi had no choice. He had no say. He associates the (unnecessary) accumulation of languages with his own disenfranchisement and his parents’ opposition to viewing him as an individual. It is deeply disturbing and breaks my heart that he had to go through that. Lastly, attitudes can and will change as you grow. I used to pride myself in being able to feel at home anywhere and everywhere. I instantly became a local and was treated like a local because I was “different” and curious. This was in the 90ies until 2010s. Now in my mid 40ies, my skin color didn’t change, my background didn’t change, my language skills didn’t change, the same places react very differently to me. The world has changed. I cannot hang out in Budapest with random locals chatting about whatever. I cannot go to Dubai (not that I would ever want to again) and be looked at as every other “tourist”. I cannot go to France shopping without security following me through the store. I cannot go to California without being mistaken for a tech worker. My desire to travel/explore has approached 0. Even the places that I always wondered about (NZ, Iceland and Singapore) are losing their appeal. Maybe I’m just getting old 😂

If you haven't purchased a lot of materials or if you're using online materials, you should try the laddering technique. Meaning you can learn French from Korean, if you feel comfortable enough to do so. It helps you to better your Korean and learn French at the same time, vs always utilizing your native language to learn a new language.

@MusicBoxAlsoWater11 ай бұрын
@haniyeh-hfp Yes, absolutely. I'd say a little closer between B1 and B2, so that you can kind of understand concepts a little better, but it varies person to person. I think if this person was going from French to Korean where letters/characters are totally different, they might need more of a higher intermediate, so that they don't feel defeated.

Big respect for teaching your children with so much love, dedication and discipline! They will profit so much from this education in their lives, not only through the languages but through the experience. It will boost their confidence, drive and love for life-long learning 💪 I can tell from my own experience how the hard work pays off and the process of learning and reaching a higher level can be so much fun. I earned my first foreign language at the age of 7, which ended up being my second native language and then added new languages gradually over the years. I now speak 3 languages at a native level, another 2 fluently and one at a basic conversational level. My 3-year old son is growing up speaking 3 languages and it's amazing how big his advantage already is now comparing to all the hard work you have to put in if you learn languages later in life. It takes a lot of attention and discipline from our sides though to guide him in his learning journey, but it's absolutely doable in our everyday lives. It takes years to master a language, but it enriches you in so many ways!

I can speak Korean, English, Azerbaijani, Russian, Turkish and Persian. Fluent in all of them and worked as a legal interpreter in my college years. I shared my information because due to my young age many times you encouraged me to take the next step in my personal growth, post-grad (your videos inspired me so many times while I was writingmy thesis), language skills, life updates even marrying early (got engaged!). You showed me many can done in someone's 20s, even with kids, thank you so much for that. In your previous language video and some related videos of yours, you encouraged me to study Persian more, because it is probably my most struggled language. I took a trip to Tehran a few months back to attend a seminar for giving a speech and I realised I was much more confident while speaking Persian, with the language and my body language, then I immediately remembered you and felt grateful. Thank you for always bringing good to us, thank you for being a muse to the younger generation And thank you for helping me to reach my better self! Such an inspiring video with wonderful tips! I agree with all that was said! I'm fluent in English and my family's native language, Afrikaans. In March this year, I started learning Mandarin Chinese. After studying for months, I feel as if I'm not making any progress, and this is a common stage in the journey of learning a language referred to as the "plateau". The most important thing to do when it comes to this stage is to persevere and remember: consistency is the mother of mastery. Also, if anyone needs another reason to learn another language, I’ve got to tell you that it is very healthy for your brain. Learning a language keeps one’s brain active and improves valuable skills such as creativity and memory. Learning Mandarin has improved my memory recall abilities and consequently my academic average has gone up by 10%. To start and continue to learn a language is one of the best choices one can make.

First of all, you're childrens level of language is amazing! Being able to switch languages is NOT easy, so well done to them! This is great advice! I recently started incorporating 20mins daily workouts, because 20mins doesn't seem too long mentally, but 1hour is scary. Even 1hour for 1x a week, so 20mins daily, I've been able to be consistent. I will try the same for language. I am learning Italian and whilst I can communicate with my in-laws...I can't with strangers - I feel a block like I can't even process because of anxiety surrounding my "bad Italian". Other than speaking to a native speaker and immersing yourself in that country if you can (I realised later that I was picking up words and phrases and using them correctly although I had no actual idea what they meant), another thing was reading - this helped so much with my sentence structures and learning new words, then pronouncing it correctly was a matter of practice.

I can speak 4 languages: Polish as my native (which let me understand a large portion of your conversation in Russian), English at an almost native level, as well as Japanese and French on a quite advanced level. I can also pick up some bits of other languages, mostly Norwegian and German. For me that initial spark is crucial, but motivation to keep learning isn't always there, so it's just as important to be consistent and practice as naturally as if it were another inseparable part of your daily life. Also, I must say I love the way you included your children in the video - very respectful of both your and their privacy. 😊 Cheers!

Such an inspiring video!💓 I wish i learned French at school instead of Latin😅 however, i grew up multilingual too, speaking German and Croatian at home and learning English and Spanish at school. I love to learn languages! It’s so fun and helpful when traveling. It’s a way easier to connect and communicate with people.

I am the opposite. I would have reduced my studying for Spanish, French and German if I learned Latin first or at the same time.

Dear Jamila! Thank you so much for the video. I’m raising multilingual kids too (4 and 2 now). I have stuck to one parent - one language framework, as that’s the recommended strategy when the kids are only learning to speak. I will expand to speaking other languages with my older one. If you could talk more specifically about your kids language journey (with what worked/didn’t work). That would be great!

I speak 3 languages, but that's mainly because they are my native languages and it took me 20 years to become very fluent (as you said, it's never perfect). But seeing your young children speak 4 languages so well has given me the will to learn new things, thank you.

Thank you. I wish I had been exposed to other languages at a young age. While I minored in Spanish in the ‘70’s, I had little opportunity to speak the language after that. Having the opportunity to practice speaking is indeed critical. Great video -thank you.

Hello and so happy to have found your video! As a fellow polyglot mother, I'm interested in understanding your arrangement (if any) for speaking one language or the other with your kids on a daily basis. So far, the main challenge that I'm facing with my own kids is to make them speak their third language, because they know we understand them in their first and second languages, so they don't see the need to make the effort to speak their third language. Many thanks and you got yourself a new follower from Spain 😊

This is my favorite video of you Jamila! I truly enjoyed listening and watching you and your children interactions speaking different languages. It’s quite inspiring to learn a new one specially watching them. I’ve noticed when you switch to different language I can tell that your daughter changed her voice and her hand gestures/ nonverbal . Your cute little boy is doing good. By the way your daughter have a beautiful hair. Thank you for sharing this video Jamila, that is very kind of you, to let your children participate doing this video. You are so gentle and very loving to them, when they speak your eyes gleaming and smiling. You are very blessed and happy! Good for you Jamila! Take care ❤

This video is an aspiring polyglot's delight! I speak Indonesian as a native. Being a 90's chinese indonesian baby, I was also exposed to English and Mandarin quite early in life (Mandarin got less practice then, but at least there's the foundation for handwriting). English was polished to near fluency in international school and the latter elevated into functional proficiency during my Masters in Taiwan. Mandarin is the one I have to actively maintain now that I'm back in my home country

Haha, I love this. It is lovely to be proud of your children, but it is 100 times better to listen to them. Your attention is captive. I am a few years younger than you but I am yet to have my children. I hope I do them the same service. I long to be the mother that you are. To be a parent is to be the ultimate guru. I only hope I get the chance and that I am worthy enough to make children as impressive as yours. Thank you for being a parental inspiration.

I want to mention something about your 2nd tip: It's important to recognize your learning style (audio, visual, hands-on, etc.) But, reading/writing uses a different part of the brain as listening/speaking I went to university for Linguistics. I'm a visual + hands-on learner. 10yr of using language apps/computer programs, + class homework couldn't get me to a good level but, singing KZbin language lessons in middle school have stuck with me forever & listening to Pimsleur audio lessons were immediately valuable. To be fluent, you have to have both listening/speaking & reading/writing pairs. They're paired for a reason, as those are modes of communication. TLDR: Find 2 solid methods (1) audio/oral lessons & (2) read/write lessons ✨️
