I use songs to learn Spanish. I use a audio editing software called Audacity. I record a song from KZbin at 0.5 playback speed and it's easier. I listen to it piece by piece. I do about a minute of song run time per day. This takes a little over an hour to practice. It's fun. I'm learning Vico C--Aquel Que Habia Muerto. That's an old one from the 90s. By the way I'm Black American.

Marc Anthony's Vivir Mi Vida was my first Spanish pop song. I learned it while I taught it to kids in 5th grade music class. Some were fluent, some could understand what they heard, but could not speak, and others we English only, por favor! If 10-year-olds can do it, in some cases against their will, anyone can. My experience says go for a song you love (either you find it, or it finds you!), definitely make sure you understand the meaning of the song (word for word is part of the work, but there must be room for play only - just like for children!). Lyrics translation sites are super helpful. I'm very particular about how I write everything down both on paper and in a document, so just by formatting I end up learning a lot. It's a long bleeping process, and I'm always ready to be finished with it before the last lyric, but this is where motivation and discipline meet passion. If it's passion that fuels me, I wring that out for everything it can give. Discipline gets me to the finish line. Talent - well, that's a huge variable. If you're good with picking up melodies, then singing what you hear first (like children do, right?) is a perfect start. Since it's my job to bring experiences of success and satisfaction to kids, I'm used to breaking it down in lots and lots of ways. I can honestly say, though, I've never required myself or my students to speak the lyrics using "perfect" Spanish in addition to the Spanish that's in the song. Idahossa Ness breaks everything down to the most basic sounds of the language. He calls it the Mimic Method. It's similar to Stephen Krashen's method he calls "shadowing". What I personally do not find helpful is listening to playlists at random. I think that makes me quite different than most people, but it's an occupational hazard after a life-time of academic music training and teaching. I love the way language and music go together. There's always a story, always culture. Some of us are led by our thoughts, others more with the heart. I go with my flow, but continue to listen to advice from others. I would personally modify Rocky's sequence of learning, but I'm pretty sure that it doesn't matter how you learn it, as long as you learn it. Here is where I ask - when do I know I have learned something? At what point am I satisfied with the experience, but then move on (definitely to revisit again and again)?

Great idea. This is perfect for me because I know a lot of words when I see them in print, but struggle a lot with listening comprehension. I'm going to Leon, Guatajuato this week. I hope i can talk to my fiance's family a little better now. Just a thought though, i know if you were learning English, you might need to be careful with rap. Most of us in US would be offended by the language rappers use. Also most older people don't know the slang young people use.

Definitely clicked on this as soon as I seen the title. My girlfriend is from Peru, while I’m from Hawai’i and I thought the only way I (personally the way I can comprehend things) can understand Spanish is through music and so she put me into reggaeton (mostly bad bunny but I also listen to jhayco) and so I use their songs, look at the lyrics while listening and see what I understand and whatever I don’t I look it up ONLY if I hear a lot in other songs too. This video helped add to what I already do. Thanks my brotha 💙

I usually don't make comments, but wanted to thank you for turning me on to this genre of music. I'm more of a old school rap 80's 90's and R&B. I like a lot of Cuzzu's songs and stuff she's featured on like Toda, Pa Mi and so on. I really like the beat and flow on many of the songs. Trying to do emersion of the language is a little tough if you don't enjoy the content. Now i can make my own playlist with songs I enjoy. I see in many learning videos disfrutas, disfrutas disfrutas what you're learning 😉 and this helps. Thanks again!
