The didgeridoo is essentially a large brass instrument. What you are doing to find your drone is essentially tightening or loosening your lips, making various different notes, until you find the one your didgeridoo resonates with, which causes a significant amplification of the sound.
@SoundAdventurer Жыл бұрын
Yep. And then you realize that brass instruments are all just tubes. They're all tubes! There's also very limited evidence that the material of the tube even matters--it's more likely the texture is what makes an instrument's sound. Or at least 95% of it.

Sometimes I'm vocalizing or even singing through the didgeridoo as I'm playing and that adds some crazy harmonics. other than that, any other harmonics come from the shape and interior of the instrument. the more uneven and chaotic on the inside of the didge the more harmonics.

I got a 6 ft bamboo stake from ace hardware for $2.50 and nocked out all the inner rings I think I’m getting the drone there’s definitely a pitch that seems different then the rest. Would you recommend cutting the bamboo shorter? Would the ridges from the inner rings cause problems would it be better if it was entirely smooth inside?
@SoundAdventurer16 күн бұрын
I wouldn't cut it shorter unless the didgeridoo is too difficult to play, since a longer didgeridoo has more "backpressure". Or, if you don't like the pitch. If you want it to be higher, than you would need to cut it shorter. It's actually completely fine for there to be ridges, grooves, and bumps inside a traditional didgeridoo, in fact many say this makes the sound of the instrument more interesting and complex. If you want to hear what it sounds like to be completely smooth, you can try playing an ABS pipe or something similar. The sound is very uniform, but it is up to your own personal taste.
@kickasscorm2 жыл бұрын
I have been playing for a while. Not brilliant. I actually do the horse sound and it does give a deeper sound, which is 1 style I've heard indigenous doing. However, i absolutely agree with all you've said and I will practice doing this better lip tension. Amazing

Thank you so much for sharing this instructional video!!! I have come to it by way of a sleep study as I suffer from UARS (Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome). It is not quite apnea, but a disturbance in my night time breathing which causes many awakenings and a lot of daytime fatigue as a result. Right now I am using a 17" vacuum cleaner tube as my 'instrument.' I can get a 'sick moose' drone and make a lot of different sounds, but because I have such allergies, circular breathing is eluding me. I just read about the Orange Swirl PVC instrument and hope it would be a good choice as I am a very small person with a small mouth. Do you think that is a good choice? Any other recommendations? So far I'm having fun, am noticing an improvement in my sleep (and really irritating my partner). Thanks again for posting this!
@SoundAdventurer3 жыл бұрын
I've not tried the orange swirl PVC instrument but I have researched them and I think it's a fantastic choice. If you need to modify the mouthpiece to fit your mouth you can use beeswax (or some people use a PVC to rubber grommet attachment). A longer instrument than 17" will make a tremendous difference and make it easier to do the circular breathing.

Hello I have piercings and would it bother to play? And also when I try to play my lips stop bouncing
@SoundAdventurer Жыл бұрын
Great question! I haven't tried it with piercings so you might have to tell me how that goes! If your lips stop vibrating, you might be putting on too much pressure. You want just enough pressure for there to be a firm seal with your lips (air shouldn't be escaping around the mouthpiece, only through the didgeridoo) After that, you might have to put more air pressure through your lips, themselves. Like you're making that horse sneeze sound. Good luck!

I can't get the circular breathing down for the lofe of me. I can blow on it just fine but i can't keep it going constantly.
@SoundAdventurerАй бұрын
Practice with blowing through a straw in water. If you can consistently do that for several days, it will help you on your didgeridoo. One thing I've found is if you have a a didgeridoo that's very wide and has very little back pressure (that's the resistance you can feel while blowing into it), that it's VERY hard to circular breathe. So... you can try this on a 3/4 inch PVC pipe and see if it's easier to get down.
@ilikebirbs33812 жыл бұрын
i am on a larger didgeridoo and my mouth is small-ish as well, so some of this was hard, if you have tips for people in my predicament, that would be awesome!
