In the last 18 years of my work life, I worked as an assistant to the General Manager in IT, but I totally disliked the job as such. The only thing that gave me pleasure was designing web pages and creating online forms for our company intranet. When I first came to the company I was advised by a co-worker to find something I enjoy and make it mine. I had dabbled with HTML at home before joining the company and further built up my knowledge base by learning CSS, JavaScript and PHP autodidact. I’m since long retired, but I still have all the books I bought myself to learn.

I'm starting to apply now with no responses yet. I know applying from another country is fine, but I can understand it being definitely a factor. You say having a degree in CS is good. I don't know how well my degree fits a CS degree, but I like to believe it does. I have a math degree with a bunch of the important CS classes in America. I also have experience doing DevOps, database development, and web development for the US government. I've also received recognition for my work. I hope this is enough.

a lot of FCC courses are a bit outdated, JavaScript for example, so you can pick it up as a starter course but don't expect to get efficient using FCC alone. Also Wes Bos is amazing, super comprehensive course.

Jen, this is inspiring! I'll come working on projects and ideas, although I'm not a Dev myself, not yet. I have been a little disappointed in my surrounding, but that's Ok. I spent a year learning front end and landed a job in a high hosting company. The work was good, everything was fine for a while. I lost my girl while working for SG. Since then I have stopped learning or proceeding with Dev. I had Front End, I was excited to get to do things, I was learning... and she left me. I left my belief and my ideas for some time. That is my biggest mistake . Thank you!

@@simplegermany Exactly! Well, I find that your recipe to owning such thing entirely new and really massive as coding, is very similar to mine, just learned it differently. First decide to change carreer path and skills. Also first, have the right person beside you. Second, have patience to see if this is really your thing and go for it at full. 🙂So who knows, it's not off the table, it might actually re-start for me sooner than I think.

U forgot to mention Ausbildung in IT, which is maybe the best option currently on German market. U get payed, u get experience, u network, u learn about newest tehnology at work. Opportunities after finishing are as good as someone who has degree, maybe even higher depending how much u invested time in learning - u have more freedom to choose in what to specialize, and not stuck with bunch of subjects that are outdated, dry, boring and unecessary. Uni and even bootcamps cant keep up with their programs with current IT Industry.

Another thing that can help with getting your foot in the door - if you don’t have the built in networks from university or bootcamp, it also really helps to go to some of the various tech meetups in your area or even online. Mintbean has some really great online mini-hackathons that are awesome for building more portfolio projects and meeting some peers and mentors.

The other network piece is to not keep your goals to yourself in your social circles broadly. Your friends, random acquaintances, and non-tech colleagues can still be a huge asset & help you get your toe in the door, but only if you tell them what you’re looking for.

Such a great video. Could you please guys make a video about how we can find a job in Dusseldorf in IT? which websites are better or which kind of trick should we use, etc ..? I know you made some different videos about some parts of this stuff, but you never made a video about how we should apply as a web developer or how we should negotiate as a web developer. I know you always try to make videos for the bigger part of your followers but I think it would be so awesome if you make some individual videos about IT sometimes.

Just to add one "not-so-hip" programming language that has a certain possibility to get you into a job is ABAP. It offers a procedural as well as an object oriented approach. It's the language you write custom programs and enhancements in to the magic 3 letters: SAP. Most companies using SAP sooner or later will either work on a contract base with an ABAP programmer or they will even hire one as in-house developer.

In my experience, I've never had a technical interview outside of Big Tech application processes. That does not mean that smaller companies won't do it. It depends on the company you're applying for.

You actually do know that there is still another way to study in Germany? As a Fachinformatiker you'd work at a company and at the same time get a three years training. You also earn some money, I guess around 1000€ a month. So if you do not want to pay AND to get a allround education.

As a software developer graduate from a University, it's extremely hard for someone that doesn't speak german to find a job in germany as someone living outside EU. But I'm learning german currently.

If you are interested in mobile development, JS,/React Native is NOT sufficient. You really must know Java/Kotlin and/or Swift, as well as SQL and XML. A good understanding of AWS, or something similar, is also very helpful.

Funny enough, I've been a Software Developer for 11 years now and I get turned down even for Junior jobs in Germany because I don't speak German yet or I don't live there. Otherwise, the situation is as you described with jobs chasing me but only for Bulgaria(the country where I currently live). I hope some day to have some German company take a risk with me otherwise I'll be forced to lie on LinkedIn that I live in Germany just so that they start chasing me :)

I studied by my own and i have been working as frontend developer by one year. I heared that in germany if you don't have a degree but have 3 years of experience and also know b1 en german, is posibble get a IT Specialist Visa to live in German. But i have a question, if i get other kind of visa ( in uruguay we have the posibility of get Working holidays visa for a whole year in Germany, in this case would be a posibilty get a job as developer in this time and start to live there permantly ? ( My native language is spanish but i have b2 in english and also i started to learn german). P.d I follow your channel for a long time i didn't expect this video :)

If your visa allows you to work in Germany, there shouldn’t be any issue in you getting a developer job. I only had 1.5 years of experience when I was hired for a developer job in Germany. So don’t be shy and apply to the jobs you would like to have. :)

Small correction regarding 10:50, CS50x (the free version of CS50 as you'd find it on edX) does not start at specific dates, you can start any time. The course receives updates every year on January 1st (new recordings from the recent fall semester, mostly small adjustments to assignments), with most submission progress being migrated into the next year (though migrated progress is not qualified for another migration).

I have masters degree in software engineering, 6 years of experience overall, almost 2 of them on a Web developer position and I can’t find any relevant positions in the Berlin. They are looking for different skills and senior level. I’m still looking for a job. Think twice before spending a lot of money for the boot camps etc. because it might be no right job for you after all.

I am a Physicist with long academic career. I wanted to do career transition, therefore did a bootcamp in Data Scientist from Sept-Dec. 2022. I am on work visa that expires in mid-April 2023. I also did a project in it and also developed another project for my portfolio. However, I am simply getting rejections just on the basis of my application, not even a single interview call (career services of bootcamp helped me to prepare my CV). Even for a junior data scientist position, recruiters are asking for 2-3 years experience, and most of the times there are more than 200 applicants even for a junior position. How to get a job in such a scenario? I want to stay in Germany, and I need a job to stay here, but I am not getting any job in Data Science. What should I do?

@@manishNep123 Not too much, I’m afraid. The IT company I worked for didn’t accept dual study. All I can say is that part of the time you would be in the company, learning your trade in an actual work environment and the other part would be spent at college/uni in a pure study-based environment. The advantage is that you would have a Bachelor’s degree as well as a certificate from the relevant chamber responsible for the Ausbildung of your choice. The disadvantage might be the stress of having to study for both educational systems.

You should definitely have an active GitHub profile and once you’re done with some projects your proud of, you should create your personal website showcasing them.
