It's very funny to see my mother language in a textbook, and listen how hard is it to foreign people to pronounce Hungarian words. I feel myself very lucky to already know Hungarian cause i think i never could have learnt it. Besides I am glad to see somebody trying to learn my language and culture, it's very pleasing :) And by the way your Hungarian is very nice ;-)

Cool, good to see a video like this. I lived in Hungary for 4 years and really only managed to pick up the basics, which took forever as I had no tutoring, and as you said, the language is very different from anything else you will come across. And I understood most of the dialogue that was shown. I actually met my girlfriend while I was over in Budapest, she couldn't speak English and I couldn't speak any Hungarian, but we got through it with Google Translate and a few books! Now we both live in the Uk and her English is a lot better now, Google Translate is only needed for obscure words. But we both do tend to speak 'Hunglish' (A mixture of Hungarian and English), which at times sounds funny.

Alex Rawlings Yeah sure! We regularly watch Tv shows that have subtitles, it teaches us both new words and meanings. We also tend to watch the news channels, BBC News and TV2 (TV2 is Hungarian), online documentaries and such things. And of course being in a relationship we both argue in a mixture of both languages :D As you know Yoda's language from Star Wars sounds backwards to us. But this is just like Hungarian, does he sound normal to Hungarian people? (lol)

I think in our language not the vocabulary is the hardest but the grammar. The word order, and the affixes. And there are some verbs which mean the same, and there are some verbs which have more than one meaning. For example, megver means to hit somebody, or to win in a game. And the formal version of the language. When you talk to a person, who is older than you you must use the formal language, or you will be impolite. And the synonimes are also hard, because we have a lot of words to one thing.
@TimeFliesGames
@TimeFliesGames 10 жыл бұрын
I agree that the grammar is the hardest thing about Hungarian, especially the conjugation. I don't think double meanings and formal speech are that difficult (or different) though. "Megver" can be translated as "to beat", which can be a physical beating or winning a game, the same way as in Hungarian. The polite form isn't there in English, but several, maybe even most languages do have it. And it's nowhere nearly as difficult as formal speech in Japanese, you just use "ön" instead of "te" and put every verb into 3rd person singular.
@Petymeg8105
@Petymeg8105 10 жыл бұрын
***** I don't agree. You can use ön in speech. For example "Szokott ön biciklizni?". When you're talking to an older person, you should use ön/maga.
@maddyg3208

The grammar makes the vocabulary harder for foreigners to understand because it changes the forms of words that are already hard to remember in their simple form.

Your hungarian is nice, and the last technique is something that I don't see very often, it's a good idea. Hungarian isn't a lang that easy to study. When you can't really say something in a word, like balra- lr, you can simply just leave the l out, and say it with 2 r, like "barra", just to make it easier. The video is very nice, I think it's helpful. Good job :) *just a random hungarian girl*

The second technique reminds me of the Saussure's semiotic triangle. The object, the idea and the word. Object : (A book) (I am pointing it with my finger so it is understood what I mean) Idea: What I have in mind Word: B - O - O - K

If I were a lenguage teacher, i would teach first some basic core words, and all suffixes that modify the meaning of the words, creating a kind of wordbush..... for example through the "tan" core adding suffixes we create some other words that are in logic relation with their parents...this can be followed by other cores.... One suffix can be followed an other one. But not all suffix can be used always. There are ca 100 suffixes in the hungarian legnague. tan-ul , lean tan-ul-hat, he may learn tan-ul-ni , to learn tan-ul-ó , student tan-ul-mány, study tan-ul-mány-(o)-z , he is studying. tan-ul-mány-oz-ni , to study tan-ul-gat , learn frequently, or meny times. tan-ul-ás , learning.. tan-ít , teach tan-ít-hat .he may teach.. tan-ít-(a)-ni , to teach,,, from the two samples of "ni" suffix" youcan see the rule, how to make infinitive... tan-ít-gat ,,, he teach many times. or frequently. tan-ít-ó ,teacher tan-ít-ás , teaching tan-oda . school.... a kind of school... tan-a-kodik tan-ács tan-ács-ol tan-ács-ol-hat tan-ács-ol-gat tan-ács-ol-ni tan-ít-tat. we can continue...... you can see, I used the "-ít", "-ás", "-ó", "-ni" , "-mány", "-gat", "-z" suffixes and I created some words. In these words are not in logic connection. you can find many "cores" and you can create new words, like the small children. And in time you will understand ho to use the suffixes... there are ca 2400 ancient meaning core in the hungarian lenguage. Using suffixes we create millions.

Hello. Are you still learning Hungarian? I have to say that (if you want to know my opinion) your Hungarian pronunciation is much better than my English, so don't give up. A többi baromarcú trollnak meg üzenem, hogy nem kell leszólni a nyelvi hibákért, természetes, hogy vannak, hiszen NEM EZ AZ ANYANYELVE... De hányan vannak abban az országban, akik a saját nyelvüket sem tudják normálisan!? Lásd a "de viszont", "nem bírok", és "muszály" eseteket. Próbálj meg épkézláb módon megtanulni angolul, az sem olyan hű de egyszerű... Hogy is mondjuk: "vowel", "answer" and so on... These are daily problems here.

As a native hungarian living in the UK for 5 years and learning polish at the moment gotta say your advice is really useful. I think the visual technique you recommended is very similar to what I us to remember new words. Normally I try to find words that are similar sounding and meaning or getting me close to meaning of the words, mostly using hungarian. One thing I would have left out of this video is the unfortunately well know "fact" that hungarian being a finno-ugric language, it is scientifically discredited by many linguist, it is more due to politics and history. If you interested in the language I would recommend the books of Csaba Varga (you can find it on Amazon in english). Kindest regards and good luck with hungarian, Zsolt

Did you try to remember words by reading up their parts or meaning? In my humble opinbion it would make easier to remember a lot of hungarian words. For example: Villamos - means that something is electric (beside meaning tram), and got the meaning of tram, as a shorthand for referring buses that use electricity instead of gasoline. Fényképezőgép - which means camera can be translated as lightimagingmachine

Thanks for sharing this! I find it hard to agree with people who claim to speak several languages; in my opinion one has to live in a country for quite some time in order to really be able to speak a language very well. I am German and I personally prefer to stick to "only" English and Spanish, trying to speak them as well as I can, however (even though one can still hear a slight accent sometimes when you speak other languages) in your case I would really say that you are able to speak a lot of languages :) Keep up the good work!!

I've never been in Australia, I've got no Australian roots, but when I talk to you in English, I'll sound like an Aussie. Strange isn't it? And somehow, I can't get it out of "my system". But Australian English is also English. ;)

I love your English accent. I mean I know that it's normal British accent, but yours sound so nice...Too bad that I aquired American accent. I mean it's also useful but I would like to be able to switch between the two....

This 3rd technique is very interesting, have you ever heard that "the most weird is the picture you can build in your mind, the most you'll memorize"?

Oh, yeah, sorry, what I said only applies to American accents. I do believe, although I'm not sure, that the o in obvious is the same sound. If you know IPA, it is /ɒ/, which is equivalent to the (British) /ar/ sound in "car" but with rounded lips.
