Hi great video, very helpful. Two question about all the thousands of words you have acquired from this method. Having all these words in your arsenal, do you find it easy to use them in a conversation instantly without having to really think to remember them? Like the words literally just come out of your mouth without even thinking. I am learning spanish and I am quite advanced in terms of speaking and I notice a lot of words just come out instantly in a convo without me thinking or translating and then some words words do not. My second question is have you noticed improvements in listening comprehension from learning vocab through this method? Thanks
@devonrd4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no! Some words came to me very easily after distilling them from my lists. The words that I had more difficulty with, were often the ones I didn't know the proper uses of. The solution then was to write sentences with these words, assisted by a native speaker. And the point regarding the listening comprehension, definitely! Knowing the word by heart takes up less working memory for our brain, leaving more working memory open for unknown words :)

Thanks for your comment! Yes this does work with phrases, although they need to be short (max. 6 words I suppose). Do youbfind the gold list method more effective and faster than any other method?
@devonrd4 жыл бұрын
Maybe not faster, but more effective in the long run. It makes it nearly impossible for words to not get into your long term memory, and if they won't after 4 distillations, you can leave those be. The method forces you to be pickier in the vocabulary you want to learn, which is a big advantage in my opinion. Secondly, you can learn organically and more personally this way, because You are creating the lists. I will make a video in the future on why I think the method is more effective than others. It's for sure worth the try!

@devonrd4 жыл бұрын
@@sertiverinacov4003 Yes, for example: you can make two new headlist (of 25 words each) per day, this would result in 1500 words in one month. Two weeks after having made the first one, the workload will increase though, because if you want to still add 50 words per day, you have to create 2 headlists per day + distill the 2 headlists from two weeks ago. This is why in the beginning you can make a lot of headlists, but as time passes you might want to slow down a bit to actually 'Consolidate' all the words from previous weeks. I hope this answers your question :)

Of course! The idea is that your original list (called 'headlist') is distilled into shorter and shorter lists with each practice session. Each time you practice, you seek to remove about 20% of the words on the list. That way the list keeps getting shorter

Hello Devon, I have a question. I have been moving a lot so I speak some languages already and for me the route to speaking it was always first understanding it completely and after that happened I automatically started to speak and it all worked out fine within 2 to 2,5 years. Do you think it is okay for me to use this method the other way around? So I can check wether I understand the meaning of a word/sentence and move on. I am asking because for my next move I would like to start off right now learning the new language, that is, learning to understand it first since I know this has been the route for me until now. Will it be as effective? Hope I got my point over clearly...Thanks for this nice video! I left a sub :-) Kind regards and good luck from Germany. (ik ben eigenlijk ook Nederlandse maar dat is alleen maar mijn nationaliteit verder heeft het niet zoveel betekenis voor mij haha!)
@devonrd4 жыл бұрын
Wow, so you abstained from practicing speaking for such a long time? I think using this method is helpful in all stages of learning a language, but most of all the middle stage (B1 and beyond), because here is where contextual vocabulary becomes very important, and having a system like this is very helpful, because you can take words from the material you consume (whether that be reading, listening or watching) and practice them :). If you are starting out on a completely new journey, I would suggest prioritising simply consuming as much comprehensible input as possible, and learning some grammar here and there. As for speaking, I think it's very beneficial to start to make your first sounds in a language already in the first months. And I say sounds because that is where we start out!
@marvelenia67024 жыл бұрын
@@devonrd Thanks for replying! Yes I abstained from speaking until I understood everyday language, hearing it and reading it. But maybe it is a knot in my brainwiring because I did not speak my mother tongue until I was 6 years old. My parents and everybody else though I was mentally retarded or even deaf but no....I guess I am just wired differently. But I will give this method a try. If it makes me feel uncomfortable I will go back to just absorbing for the time being. Thanks for your time and effort and good luck with german, my third language and actually my best at this moment.

well, I'm going to give this a try, but I am not so sure about it tbh XD But just to get this straight, I write a list of words, then their translations, and just forget about it for two weeks. Once the two weeks have passed, I revise and write the ones I forgot? Also, is it advisable to do this while still learning the grammar? or only after attaining a good level of grammatical understanding?
@devonrd4 жыл бұрын
Yeah give it a try! You can start doing this method at any point in your language journey, and a grammatical understanding is definitely not necessary! You can have this method as your main vocab method, and practice grammar seperately. Verb conjugations that I find difficult I write in the headlists as well, so I practice those more :) As for revision: make sure you don't simply look at the answers, but try to really 'produce' the translation. (even better if you say it out loud, this has been studied) This ensures that the actual answer (if wrong) sticks better! All the best with your practice

You might opt for a different approach in that case. I'm not very experienced with this, but I could imagine that there are flashcards apps that prompt you with sounds, and where you can respond by saying you knew the answer, in which case the word will not return quickly, or respond by saying that you didn't know the answer, in which case the word will come back to practice it again. If I come by a good solution I will tell you!

I'm shocked this method works for people. You slightly modified it from the method I saw on KZbin years ago - the video I saw doesn't recommend memorizing the words at all just writing them down and reading them over a couple of times. But basically you have to cut the list every two weeks regardless of whether you remember enough words or not and this is where the method failed me. Aside from the first distill, where did remember a few words, probably because they were coming up elsewhere, I forgot everything. Weirdly, I was thinking about this method recently and I'm trying out 2 week intervals instead of 1 day intervals with Anki. I am just starting this out so I don't know how well it will work. I imagine it will work quite well with any vocabulary I've been reviewing for a while but still fail sometimes. I have no idea how it will work for completely new vocabulary though. The author of this method chose two weeks because if you test yourself too soon you're just testing your short term memory, when all you care about is your long term memory. In theory if you test something after two weeks you're testing your long term memory making this interval more efficient. It assumes of course that reviewing something every few days (short term memory) doesn't do much to push something into your long term memory. From using Anki for years and years my subjective view is that it doesn't do a whole lot to push it into your long term memory although who knows for sure. So testing something every two weeks instead seems like it could be much more efficient and makes sense but if you forget everything after two weeks then what? I would argue you need to test all the words again in two more weeks unless you think these words are all too hard for you thus you're better off never reviewing them again. If you use Anki to test yourself every two weeks it shouldn't be so time consuming. In theory. There's a lot of words to learn and if they're never sticking and you're always failing then it probably will add up after a while.
@devonrd3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@devonrd3 ай бұрын
The method is definitely not very effective in the short term. Looking back on this method I feel that it is effective for those who want to have some form of vocabulary practice that involves getting cozy with a notebook. Then again, the no. of words I can review per minute with Anki is orders of magnitude higher; you only need to know the 1-2-3-4 hotkeys, and off you go. 10 cards per minute is easily done. But then Anki might feel 'unromantic' or not the kind of experience people were looking for when thinking about learning a language, and from my experience that emotional side becomes very important long term for people to keep up their practice 😊😊
