Love Billy Sheehan. Thank you Scott for mentioning him in this video. As an LA (local 47) Trombonist (mostly Jazz) I have been fortunate to have gigged with some great bassists (Carol Kaye, Brian Bromnerg etc) and went to school with Jay Anderson. As well as many bassists that are lesser known but extremely talented musicians. I want to thank you Scott as you have kept the "spark" alive in all of your lessons. After a stroke at 59 years old I basically had to start learning to play over again. Sort of like Sisyphus rolling the rock up the hill again. My bass studies fom you Roy Vogt Billy sheehan ) has kept me going. Thanks again. Hope someday to meet you and thank you in person. Take care And keep the faith ! Rick

Great tips! Just thought that I'd add that while scales are all good and well, the MOST important thing to learn in my opinion is arpeggios. I say this from 20+ years of playing music on and off, having played a variety of instruments, having played in various bands, having written and recorded a lot of my own music, and ultimately having embraced the bass guitar as the instrument I'm most passionate about. # 1 - Arpeggios are actually fun to play! By combining different arpeggios you actually make music as you practice, rather than just doing boring scale exercises. Thus, you stay more motivated. # 2 - Learning arpeggios on bass is the equivalent of knowing every existing chord on guitar. Minors, majors, diminished, augmented, 7ths, 1st inversions, 2nd inversions, different types of fingering, different patterns, and understanding how they all correlate together. Once you learn all these patterns in one key, you automatically know them in every key. Music is made up of chords, not scales. Thus, it's much more practical. # 3 - Once you've mastered arpeggios you'll know which extra notes fit in when needed, even if you've never formally studied scales. In other words, by becoming proficient with arpeggios you'll understand scales - but by being proficient with scales you won't understand arpeggios.

Dan Avi sed "... *combining different arpeggios you actually make music as you practice, rather than just doing boring scale exercises* ." MUSIC being the take-home. ^ ^, This is immensley powerful and can cut years off ones' odyssey on the way to bass god. I have a video clip of Jaco P. ~uncharistically thoughful~ when asked what he'd suggest first/foremost to ANY bassist wanting to break out of he mold...he was quiet...and then said `I'd say definitely learn and play melody `. This is why, in the YTbe series I"m almost ready to spring on the world, I call what you're referring to: "ExerSongs". Those ol' boring scales, we don't call 'exercises' [your Mind-Body is quick to experience N.N.B Syndrome., 'neural net boredom'] ! Instead refer to them as..."Practice Routines". N.N. will lo-v-v-e you. And hey, very astute of you !

! ! In addition, at 03:26, not THIS ^ ^ page...but here folks >> kzbin.info/www/bejne/naKsh5SYaZt-jJo Just stumbled on it *after* my abv post. Wow & LOL. (Is there an echo ?) Next...once you can make it thru a solid go-round, go back and learn to SING it while playing it. AND get it *DOWN COLD* [so you can talk to your significant other while...well, not singing, but playing it thru flawlessly]. & if you have to slow it down to do this, so what! Instead, just be thinking abt how many minds you'll blow when you speed it up again. This general technique hugely helps collapse the "delay factor in advancing quickly" btw.
@gbarrmusic6 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, learn your major scale inside out and understand why it and its degrees exist, and then learn all your arpeggios as "removals." For example, if you know your C Major up and down two octaves and all around the fret board, and then one day you say "Ok, so for a maj 7 arpeggio I need to do 1 3 5 ^7," and you learn how to shred that in the same context, and then dom 7, then min 7, then dom b7 etc., and then your modes, you will be a way better player. I call it "arpeggio by removal." It will make a lot more sense than just learning all those things independently from one another.

I saw Billy Sheehan with The Winery Dogs in Columbus, OH in November of 2013. Wow, what an amazing show! Mr. Sheehan is phenomenal, and I find it hard to describe how fast he can play. From my experience, seeing him on KZbin is one thing, but being in the second row and watching him play those amazing baselines was almost a magical experience. It is one of the top 5 concerts of my life, and I am truly grateful that I got see him live once in my lifetime. Thank you Scott for all that you do, and thank you for another wonderful lesson. Most of mr.Sheehan haters are yelling - "his shredding a lot! That's not what a real bass player should do" or " I hate his tone!". Billy Sheehan can really do those thing you calling - real bassist work - in much better way then most good solid bass players can. He can record a session in one take, with the tone that fits a song and it will be perfect, and it will be way much interesting than you could expect from a good solid bassist.

The note E can mean something just by itself. I love the lowest F note, how deep it sounds and vibrates, and the tension on that fret. Sometimes i just hit that single note and let it sustain and listen. Sound comes before melody, physics in music comes before mathematics.

Saw Rush and Mr.Big in concert ... Geddy and Billy did a thump off that was unreal. Billy was amazing, I thought Geddy took it just because I'm a huge Geddy fan 😊
@pryzmcat6 жыл бұрын
I saw them as well, but didn't get to see Billy and Geddy have a duel, now that would be cool to see. I know that Billy is probably hands down way more efficient at technique and pyro technics, ( and he is not a fan of Geddy's flemenco technique) and Billy probably has a way better understanding of theory. But, Geddy just has this Geddy mojo. He developed his skills differentyl than Billy, he approached bass playing in the context of being a singer( try playing a few Rush tunes and singing it, I mean really try to play the correct bass line to say..'Vital Signs" and then sing it..good luck with that.") If you listen to Rush from about 'A Farewell to Kings" onward, you will hear how he changed, still so formidable, but really more tonally and harmonically brilliant. Oh then add in some keys and some foot pedal synths...but man, when to comes to tasty AND technical..Stanley and Victor..( we all know where Jaco is..he's got his own plane of existance..)

You know Scott, I might not be the *hugest* Billy Sheehan fan (wait, keep reading!), but I have two positive things to say about the man - or in your case, The Man. First, I LOVE how unabashedly ebullient you are about him! You are simply unrepentant about having a positive opinion on the subject. I like that. Your enthusiasm is contagious, makes me want to look up a Sheehan video right now. And secondly... Billy Sheehan gives great clinic! His personality is not at all what I expected from a Metal God. He is lucid, learned, unassuming and genuinely interested the "how" of music, as opposed to showmanship he is known for. I was stunned, but in a positive way. I love his lessons, could watch/listen to the man (talk about music) all day long. You asked for a 'like' and a comment, there you have it. Keep up the excellent work, and thank you.

Billy did a clinic in our local music store not too long ago, and yeah he rocks and has great tone (from small amps!) but what blew me away more than his playing was what a supremely nice and gracious guy he is. Just positive and encouraging and a pleasure to be around. PS his unique technique stems from his youth, using his bass to fill in the keyboard parts on cover songs because his band couldn't afford a keyboard or another member! Necessity, right? Cheers Scott!
