One should lock the helm with the rudders straight. You then have both hands to control the morse controls, or throttles. We normally tie a fender horizontal on the bow in line with the dock. Engaging one motor forward and one backward, you push against the dock with your fendered bow. Once the wind is straight on your stern you engage both motors astern and move slowly away from the dock. The less lines you use the better. If a slip line gets tangled on the dock it gets tricky :)

Or heaven forbid you have a new deckhand who drops a line in the water, and fouls a prop.

In simpler terms, use the engines like driving a tracked vehicle like a tank.

getting away is the easy part, it's the getting back that gets you.

Would have been nice to have a close up of the controls while manoeuvring the cat.

"Reverse the sailboat out of the slip like you stole it." Words from an old timer, never had a problem since.

Looks easier with 3 people. Why use the cross tie, the advantages were not explained. Thanks for the vid.

if you need a video to show you how to maneuver a twin screw boat with props more than sixteen feet apart, maybe you should think about hiring a captain.

+saildale Not so easy, if you look at 2:14, no one on board is paying attention to the port rear and these pros could have easily brushed their neighbor. There wasn't much wind in the video, but I've been pasted to a concrete pier by a 30 knot cross wind in Bora Bora, was not easy to get off at all without buggering up the bow. Twin screws don't let you go sideways (especially twin saildrives that rotate in the same direction) I think they would have been better off using the dock cleat at the center of the boat tied to the bow, that would reduce resistance to the pivot and reduce motion of the bow so it moved less on their fender/dock. The video didn't really show his maneuvers with the engines which would be helpful for the newbies.

Mark Long wow do you still consider sailing fun, to a novice like myself it's sounding to much like a ball ache

Absolutely, it's fun, but it is also a challenge. There is always something to test your skills and challenge you to develop new ones. It's all about taking measured risks and being ok w/ mistakes as long as they don't put someone in danger. Then again, there are many who have bought a boat and sailed off w/ little to no experience and they had a great time.

Thanks Mark I guess we all take calculated risks daily. I've just completed a solo 120 km sail (not including tacks) in a Hobie Adventure Island up the western side of Fraser island QLD. Thunderstorms, poor wind and strong currents. Made it a huge challenge which dented my enthusiasm for further adventure (for the time being)
