Hi Henry,love all your videos. Question is I de-orange peeled my van last year with denim pads after watching your vids,great results but I never dared go right to the edge of panels for fear of burning thru. Or like in this vid where you stopped about 1/2 inch short of the door handle scoop raised edge,have you got any tips on how to get right to the edges,raised edges etc ?? would you use the tilt the rotary technique,or tape the edges to within a couple millimetres ?? would love to be able to get rid of 100 percent of the orange peel..... thanks,keep up the great work and more vids please !! I probably watch more detailing vids than is healthy but gotta say I love your no nonsense,to the point explanations and for someone with such obvious skills you seem a really humble guy,keep up the great work !!

Hi Don, thank you for watching our videos! Glad you liked it :) If the paint type is soft, it is possible to level orange peel without sanding via a Dual Action Polisher. There's leveling pads for DA and the same compound is used. However we don't have data on paint types out of Malaysia, but generally if it's sticky soft paint, it's soft and easy to level with the DA

Wouldn't it be quicker to knock the peaks down first with 1500 and then 2500, then use the polish? Isn't that the desired end results to flatten orange peel no matter which method u use?

Hi Wino Kitty! There’s a lot pros and cons to levelling OP via sanding as well as via the rotary denim pad. it’s true that ultimately what matters is flatness, so user habits are to each their own. Maybe you can give the denim pad and our compound a go and see if you like it? :)

@OSRENOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
Hi David Behr, thank you for watching our videos! Polsihing and Waxing are two different category, both equally important but polishing is way more technical and waxing is pretty straight forward (not so much on technique but more on the product itself). But yea, maybe I should do a video on waxing. Hehe The products i feature in this video does not contain wax or silicones. So ideally better to top up a wax/sealant/coating after. Our products are not available in the US at the moment but we can ship internationally. Feel free to send us a product inquiry through our web. www,osren.com

good formative show. I do have a question though. other than using DA polisher what kind of technique you utilize? Or is DA itself a secret problem solving machine? If the DA was secret a wapon, why is that?
@OSRENOfficial
@OSRENOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jongkeun Lee, other than the DA, for this paintwork, it's also possible to finish with the rotary polisher but easier with the DA. To put it simply, the DA polishes the surface with less heat. Unlike the rotary polisher that rotates in a single axis, the DA works in a orbital movement hence less heat build up on a single spot. Heat is required if you want cutting. But for finishing, sometimes you want less heat and so the DA does the job.

@OSRENOfficial
@OSRENOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Spock! If orange peel is an issue and you would like to rectify by spraying another layer of clear, you would still need to sand the current layer to even it, and create “groves” for the fresh clear to sit on. However with a wrong spraying technique, you’ll potentially get more orange peel. 😬
@callmebackfriday2
@callmebackfriday2 2 жыл бұрын
@@OSRENOfficial You are right on. My first coat of spray max 2k seems to be better compare to second coat/attempt. I am so upset that the 2nd one worst than the first. (I should wait for your reply). After the first coat with some orange peel, I decided to sand it all off and re-do again with another coat of spray max 2k. Since I have to go through 2nd time, I decided to use some base coat (silver metallic) on the roof top peel area but the result is now I have tiger strip plus slightly orange peel. After reviewed the result, I should not touch it the second time. I think tiger strip is worst than orange peel. Anyway, thanks so much for your input and information. Not going to try 3rd time. In California, we have a drought; therefore, no car wash and I will use the dirt to cover the roof imperfection. LOL Thanks again for your advises. 👍

Can you use this pad on metallic paint job after painting it in the first 24 hours.
@OSRENOfficial
@OSRENOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Zanaga1, yes you may use this combo after the first 24 hours. However like all paints, full cure is 30 days. So after 30 days, the paint will shrink a little bit and a somewhat OP like texture will resurface. Of course it won’t be as (assuming you have bad OP after painting) bad after levelling after the 24 hours. After 30 days, you may need buff again. Also do check with the paint supplier on the specifications of the paint you use. They could give you more insights

Hi Radhwan, thanks for watching! We have a 5.5" flat jeans pad for DA. However the design is for DA, but leveling orange peel with a DA is only limited to softer/stiicky paintwork. For most repainted or harder paintworks, the DA is not powerful enough to level without sanding. www.osren.com/product/other-pads--backing-plates/all/140mm-foam-disc-2000 Link to the product I just mentioned ^

Would the jeans pad be safe to use with a da? My only machine at this time is the PC7424xp. Have a newer '17 A5 with slight orange peel (30-40%) of what this panel had... thanks
@OSRENOfficial
@OSRENOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
On "softer" paint, it's possible to level with a DA. But on "harder" paints, it's near impossible as the DA tool itself doesn't generate enough heat on a particular spot to work in the compounds to level the paint. ("soft" and "hard" paint are categorized based on the ease of correction, you can also say soft is brittle vs hard is elastic)

Hi Imran Omar, IPA is short for Isopropyl Alcohol. Basically I used that to clear up any polishing oils on the surface to check and see if the defects I'm trying to remove is removed and not just covered up. Water may not be strong enough to clean. As for pressure on polishing/compounding it's really hard to explain by words and scientific figures. For this you really gotta try different amount of pressure to see what works for you

Good question Nikos. Based on one of the detailer's finding, difference is negligible on hard paint You may read it here : www.google.com/amp/s/wetshine.net/2012/08/22/analysis-sanding-vs-velvet-pad-compounding-to-reduce-orange-peel-which-removes-more-paint/amp/ Do note that he tried out perfect 40 which is the former formulation. You will remove more clear coat by polishing. I worked for the specialist part of a prestige brand and when we offered flattened paint it was always sanded and then polished. To remove orange peel you only need to remove the high points and this can only be done with sanding with no foam layer (i.e. by hand or by machine with no foam layer). With polishing you are removing the peaks and also getting into the valleys. I wet-sanded my L200 by hand and removed about 1 micron of clear coat according to my paint meter. It then removed more to clear out the scratches and I think it was about 4 microns total. I did a small area on my wife’s car by only using compound and hard pads then refining and in total removed about 15 microns!

This is a very confusing topic. So many experienced technicians have differing opinions. I think most say do NOT sand or polish the base coat. Just apply clear coat on top and polish the clear coat. But, if the orange peel is in the base coat then how does polishing/sanding the clear coat diminish the orange peel? Do they mean that if you have orange peel in the base coat that you should just apply one more base coat over the top of the orange peel and hope it comes out level and then clear coat it? Then there are other techs who say that you CAN level out the orange peel in the base coat before applying the clear coat. What did you do in this video? Did the paint job have a clear coat or were you polishing the base coat?
@OSRENOfficial
@OSRENOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes the car Henry levelled is with clear coat. levelling the color coat before applying clear coat will help improve with a better angle of reflection as reflection happens when light bounces off on the color coat. If you do have the equipments to paint and have the time, by all means, go ahead. (It's similar to preparing a levelled surface by sanding and even out putty on bare metal before painting anything) However, if the car is painted beforehand and delivered to us, and that one does not have any resources to perform painting, then levelling the clear coat is the best one could go for. it's all about producing the best result given the resources at hand.

What do you do when the denim pad is caked with compound? Do you just leave it there?
@OSRENOfficial
@OSRENOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Hey John, Denim and velvet pads are not absorbent like other regular pads. The dried polish and residues would actually accumulate and cake on the surface of the pad, you may just scrape it off with a brush. (similar to how we use a duospur on wool pad) The residues and dried polish would also be flung out during the polishing process, so do expect it to be a little messier than usual.

@OSRENOfficial
@OSRENOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, you can actually level down with dual action polisher with our denim/velvet pad designed for dual action polisher as well. For 1200 to 1500 grit, even on hard paints, it might still leave some sanding lines if we were to inspect closely with floodlights at certain angles. I recommend refining it to 2000 and if possible, 3000 before hitting it with a dual action polisher for best of results. Usually, 2000 would be good enough if you use a sanding block.

Great stuff, but it seems like a lot of buffer work.

Hey, yes, indeed. All good things come to those who wait. This was many years ago and now with the new formulation of Nao leveler 56, most medium to hard paint can be done in 2 steps. Paint leveling followed by paint correction. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ-xaaJunsd8Zsk Do check it out when you have the time

I feel like I could have wet sanded that area, with equal or greater results, in the time it took me to watch this video. Let alone, the time it took you to do it. Looks good though.

Careful with this method as it may generate a lot of unnecessary heat that could be avoided with sanding. Uneven temp on painted surfaces could cause failure of one of the paint stages. If your compound isn't strong enough to level paint in a few passes, ditch it for wet sanding. What's with the arm swinging lmao that's why the results are so uneven

Practice makes perfect! Ideally you want to have the clear coat flatten before starting the paint correction process. Once it's levelled to your liking, start correcting. We use straight lightings as visual guideline, it helps.

Hi Steve Morley, Thank you for watching our videos and for your kind words! It encourages us to make more videos :) As for your question, I would use the "tilt the rotary" technique but at a lower rev, say 800 - 1000rpm max. I would also apply the compound manually on the edge on where I want to hit. But you still have to be careful as not to over tilt the machine. Taping would be safe but it would also mean you'll never gonna get the extra millimeter. Hahaha. There is another pad which you can consider to hit the edge. It's a 83mm flat denim (not beveled ). More info on the link below www.osren.com/product/other-pads--backing-plates/all/83mm-foam-disc-2000
