The roll of tape might work if you get it spinning fast enough that its rotational momentum (gyroscopic effect) keeps it from tipping over sideways. Once it tips over though, the round side is no longer shaping the air flow and it's not going to float.

I have seen this exact experiment done successfully with a roll of tape. The trick is to keep it stable by blowing at it along the curve. The spinning helps keep it afloat.

I have the idea of using something like this with the paper airplane to make a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) system, although it would be more of VTO because it would need to have the launch system on the ground.

Why the Blue bowl was floating and the clear one was not. The clear one has that circular rim around the bottom to deflect the air away from the sides causing the bowl to be unstable. The blue bowl does not have this rim at the bottom. The bowl is flat and therefore the wind can come up the sides.
