Some manhole lids should really have a separate viewing portal built in so you don’t have to lift them just to see if there’s a blockage. It feels like manhole lid design is medieval.

Excellent. I was searching google to know if a normal functioning manhole should be full with water or not. As usual google is useless to find a quick answer but I can see from this that there should be no water.

If you have no keys an easy way I found is to use a spanner in the one of the key holes. Lift one side of the cover using the spanner, insert something under the lifted end to stop it dropping back down, the attack the other side. The open end of the spanner should be used, one half in the hole with the length of the spanner away from the edge of the cover, stand behind the spanner and lift.

Thanks Al I have a cover that has the 2 indentations with bars across, but the bars have completely rusted away, so have to lift it the other way, with screwdrivers..

That drain looked like it still needed a clean when you put the cover back. If you use screwdrivers, it's easy if you use a couple of monster sized ones!

Instead of using screwdrivers, use pliers as your manhole lifting keys and then put a spade underneath to stop it falling back down.

Thanks for this video. I've got drain cover just like this, but it won't shift. It looks to have two bolts at opposite corners, as well as the key-holes. Is it safe to assume these are not decorative? What's the name of the tool I'd need to undo those?

@@dereton33 Thanks. The manhole keys are what you're demonstrating here, I have those. But there are also two recessed bolts in my drain cover at opposite corners, which I'm guessing are the reason my manhole keys won't lift it...

A couple of spanners will act as keys with rope through the ring ends. Then lift.

My drain covers were put in with the block paved driveway and any keys i have purchased have been too big. Any ideas ? The size of the key hole is 30 x 15 mm.

Only to angle grind the keys you have to fit the openings.

Every home has clear outs in the UK. We call them manholes. You should have them in America.

Is this a joke, just about every bit of this is wrong. No gas detector, should be two man lift, never lift a cover straight out you could get a blast oh CH4 or H2S and on and on, and don't start me with the screwdrivers!!

Perhaps I should also be wearing a radiation suit, an armoured jacket, a gas mask and put a 500 yard clearance order out before lifting in case the bugger blows up. JoB ( jobs worth I think.) Been lifting these for the last 50 years, nothing ever blew up, gassed me or prevented me lifting with screwdrivers. Show some common sense. If it were up your jobsworth kind, nothing would ever get done .

So are you saying lift it up partially and allow to ventilate for a couple of minutes before fully removing? I dont have a gas detector but will a canary do?
