Your method is the one I've used for over 30 years. I have been a floral designer for almost 40 years, and was hired to set up trees for business as well as individuals. After I retired and moved down to NW Arkansas, It was a joy for me to participate in the Victorian Homes Christmas Tour in Eureka Springs in 2000.

Our mothers must have gone to the same tree-lighting school or something, my mom was also VERY PICKY about everything having to do with tree decorating as well and taught me the exact same method. It wasn't until I was fifteen she let me do the lights myself, I got to fluff the tree by myself at 16, and got to help with the ornaments my last year at home! Every year thereafter I made a point of helping her when I was home for Thanksgiving, it was for me the best day of the year because Mom and I would spend the whole day together, doing something we both loved doing with someone we loved. Sadly, she passed away when I was 28 years old. I'm now 58, and every year for the past 30 years I still put up the tree just like my mom did, and I even had a little helper myself for a precious time. Nowadays my home is quiet and dark for most of the year, just me and my memories. For those I'm deeply grateful, every day. And come Thanksgiving Day I'll brighten my home just like always, it's time well spent and for which I'm always thankful. Merry Christmas, Y'all. Now go spend some time with the ones you love.

I also do my tree like this and if I might add another tip I’ve used the last 3 years and absolutely love it is to add one string of twinkle lights first deep in the tree. Since it’s in the middle near the trunk it’s not obnoxious but just the right amount of twinkle along with the regular lights.

Let me add a few tips: if you can fold each row at a time, bottom row up, it's helpful to do one row at a time while the other higher rows stay folded up out of the way. Also, It's perfectly okay to cut corners on the bottom and middle rows of the sides that are against a wall not easily visable. On those rows, instead of going all the way up and down each branch, you can loosely go up one branch, and loosely go down the next. Just be mindful of which sides will be viewed from an observers vantage point. I promise, it is completely unnoticeable from the face sides. And, it not only saves time and effort, but also cuts out unnecessary light strings that cost money and can fail.

Great first tip 😊However, I have a rotating tree stand so the second one is out for me🤣 I’m so extra so I don’t mind the extra work.😊this year I’m adding 8 rotating ornaments and I have a black Christmas tree. So since you can’t use led string lights with the rotating motors and I wanted cool white. I brought iridescent string lights just for the rotating ornaments. So, I had to spray paint the string lights black so they don’t interfere with my cool white lights. Do you know anything about that? Or an easier way I could have done that?

Thanks for confirming what I was thinking. I have a Balsam Hill tree that came with red cords to tie up each section. Usually, I release each section as I insert it into the main pole but, watching this video, I realized that I can string the lights one section at a time, while keeping the other sections neat, tied up and out of the way. Can't wait to add my lights this year!

I've been doing it this way since I was young, but with one variation: I weave the lights under and over each frond as I go in and out of the tree, so as to better hide the cord. It is still easy to take them out, (although maybe not quite as easy) and they stay where they're supposed to. :)

I had a pre-lit tree and ended up removing all of the lights when they started going out. That was a crazy amount of work. I bought a prelit tree and it lasted a few years before half the tree lights went out. I removed the lights and instead of stringing the way this video shows I used the icecicle lights (that people use on the outside of their houses) spread on the branches much easier. Another tip a saw was to put large ornamnets close to the trunk that lets the lights bounce off of them. This will be the first time I try this trick.

I'm a professional decorator. I been decorating tress for 23 years. So, when I put lights on a tress. That, I do. I start on the back. I lay and only wrap the tips of each of the branches. This give a fuller and well lighted light effect. Doing it, this way. It makes it easier to remove the lights. If a set goes out or stops working. I also put the plugs in the back of the trunk and do each level with a set of 100 or 300 light string. Doing it this way also cut out the number of sets needed and it covers half the level with 4 set or less depending on the width of the tree and height. So a 8 foot tree. When im done the tree has over 1,000 or 1,500 lights.

I’ve done this method twice: the first time was WONDERFUL. Last year, the lights kept blowing a fuse and killing the lights. What kind of extended cords/power strips are recommended to avoid shortages? And do you connect in Christmas lights in bundles of 3 or less? I prefer the look of traditional colored lights that aren’t LED.

I run a cord halfway up the back of the tree so the top strings can connect to that. Usually 3-4 strings connected, and I also do not particularly care for the LED :)

Yes, I agree those pre-lite trees are not worth a penny. I had one in my basement and the first Christmas it worked out in a pinch, looked pretty good. Second Christmas not so much, only the top section worked. So naturally, I attempted to locate the bad connection and after about 2 hrs got frustrated and threw it in the trash. Great video by the way, that is how my parents put their lights on the tree and it does make for less dizziness and a bit of eaze when it comes to take the tree down. Have a great holiday, Merry Christmas 🎄

Great tip, do you start the process of l putting the lights on the tree from the bottom of the tree to the top of the tree?
@LostFoundDecor
@LostFoundDecor Жыл бұрын
Usually from the bottom :) That way it gets easier and a little faster as you go.

Yea I got a pre lit tree and the 2nd year the lights didn’t work. It took me roughly 6 hours to cut them out. Now I can use any lights I want.

My mom used to do the Martha method every year and the tree was gorgeous! But it was so much work. She passed away almost 3 years ago and I miss her tree decorating help immensely. I believe your way will give me the “mom tree” look without the headache. Thank you for sharing!

A lot :) But every tree is different. You may just need to buy some extra and then return what you don't end up using.

This is how I do it too! I actually bought a prelit tree and when the lights went out I cut them all off. Omg that took forever. But it’s so much better stringing my own!!

Yep, you have to cut them off, no other way around it! It's a beast of a project, but if the tree is nice, I think it's worth it! I think in 30-ish years we will all look back at when pre-lit trees came on the scene and realize we were had, lol

0:27 Yeah same. My dad used to do that when I was a kid and he didn't completely cover the the whole tree. I looked up online about how much Christmas lights should be put on a 7 foot tree it's about 600 lights. Three years ago I began covering up the tree with lights.

New Sub here! That's an awesome tree and I'm with you, I wouldn't get rid of it for a pre lit tree. I have a $1,400 17 foot pre- lit monster and although I have a light fixer, it now has issues with those lights so..... I'm putting lights on it this year, but really my point is....I agree, a pre lit tree isn't all that lol. I was tempted to get a new one when I saw all the new fancy amazing trees at home depot and thought nope! I have this perfectly beautiful tree, so this year I'm just going to add lights and maybe fix it next year or take the old pre lit lights off all together. I'm glad you made this video because there are lots of young people with their first time "living on their own" trees and it's helpful to both young and people who want to learn a new way! Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the Sub! I'm sorry about your tree :( Be sure to bring a pair of scissors and/or wire cutters when you go to remove the lights--they are almost impossible to get off without cutting!

Thank you!! I never thought to light my tree this way, and I LOVE IT! How tall is your tree? Also how long is your lights? I’m having a hard time deciding how many or how much length I need my string of lights should be to light my 9.5 ft tree. If anyone can help me out, I’d greatly appreciate it ☺️☺️

This is the problem I’ve just found out tonight….my string of lights is far too short to do this. I’d LOVE a rough guesstimate of the sort of lengths your going to need for your tree. I put a second set of lights on and it looked great….till I realised the colours are different shades of white!!! Yikes😳😱
@LostFoundDecor

You can estimate roughly 100 lights per foot of tree. I tend to use about 10 strands of 100 lights

@natyrosa what did you end up doing? I’m trying to calculate for a 9.5ft tree as well. I just ordered 2 305ft strands of 1000 leds each. This method must use quite a bit! They arrive Weds 🤞🏻

@@natyrosaI ended up using only one of the strands and it was actually 328ft. We had a few feet left at the end we worked back down the tree. Next time I won’t be so skimpy on the bottom layers.

@LostFoundDecor
@LostFoundDecor 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I didn’t share that specifically in the video, bc I honestly lose count 😂 I would say in use between 8-10 strands on my tree, but it depends on how long of strands you get. I run and extension cord up the back side of the tree and plug the top half of lights into that, so they don’t short out. I know every year I wind up running to the store to grab one or two more strands to finish up 😂
