How To Put Lights On A Christmas Tree Video - Christmas Tree Decorating Tips

Here is a quick video showing how to light a Christmas tree! Light amount is a preference, so if you like more subtle lighting, weave the lights closer to the edge to use less. If you want more, weave a little further into the tree. This balsam fir is lit with incandescent string lights. We used about 850 light count on this 7.8 ft tree. 150 of those are twinkle lights that were mixed in (after the regular lights) to give the tree a sparkling look!

Great video! Placing the Christmas tree stand on "Husky Movers" (if you have carpet) allowed us to walk around the tree with the lights, like you demonstrate. Then easily slide the tree back in place.

Hi Marie! Yes you could. The only reason I use smaller strands is because if something happens to a larger strand, the entire strand is unusable but if you have 3 - 100 light strands and one stops working, you still can use the other two :)

I always started the lights at the top of the tree. With the plug at the top, my lighted angel is simply plugged in. I make sure I put lights on the inside of the tree first, then bring them to the outside. I put them on in a way that will make it easier to remove them when I take the tree down.

I was hoping to see what to do with any excessive lights at the top of the tree if the stand is to long or I miscalculated

Hi Marj, If you reach the top of the tree with lights left over, and the tree is against a wall or in a corner (where you don't see the back), you can run the excess lights up and down the back of the tree evenly until the lights are used up. This will also make more lights sparkling through too! :) If all sides of the tree will be viewed, spiral the lights back down the tree over the existing lights as evenly as possible & shuffle around the existing lights up or down in places that look like there are too many lights if necessary. Usually this is unnoticeable - especially once the tree is decorated. I hope this was helpful! :) - Christopher

Thanks Linda! I'm only stringing one strand at a time. These strands are fresh out of the box and the lights are closer together because they are still "accordion" from being tied in the box. I usually don't stretch the strands straight and just let that accordion look work into the tree :) -Christopher

I wonder why not start at the top of the tree? That way if at the end you find you have way too many lights left over from the last strand you can distribute it through more volume of tree on the bottom vs the smaller area on top which would look more obvious.

Could barely see, but the lot was close to my home. When I put it "up," it was about two feet taller than my ceiling. Made a nice L shape. So much for trees on sale.

If you were putting 2 different colors on the tree, how would you do that? Blue and white lights.

Hi Harry! To get an even look with two colors, I would add all of one light color evenly first, and then add the next over top of the first. Because you would be adding double the lights, I would try using half as much of each color, meaning you wouldn’t weave much into the tree with the lights, but rather evenly spiral the lights (one color at a time) up the tree. I decorate trees outside with white and red lights and that is how I get an even look :)
