My mother in law has that same type of water heater and this video was awesome. Her electric ignitor isn't working and that did the trick. Thank you

Sweet, thanks, I have a 92' Dutchmen Classic Fifth wheel and I have never turned it on yet. I bought it almost a year ago and it has been so hot here in NM that it didn't matter. All I need it is for showers and dishes.

Thanks for the video! So one thing I don’t quite understand… does the water heater shut off when it gets to a certain temp or does it just keep heating? Should I turn it off at night when going to sleep or just leave it running all night?
@fullmoonadventureclub5 ай бұрын
Once the pilot is lit It will automatically turn off and on as needed to keep your water hot. Turn the gas to the off position when you don't need hot water for a long time or storage.

so I never saw, but he is the propane switch supposed to be turned on inside the RV before doing all this? for example I've got a electricity and a propane switch for the hot water inside. does that get turned to propane before lighting this pilot or should it light independent of that switch?

I have the same suburban water heater. Only thing is the last owners did some kind of modification to make it electric. There is a AC wire that is cut they connected the ground wire back to the front of the unit. The other two wires are connected to what looks like a big thermostat and then to a toggle switch. I’m not sure why they did this but I can’t get the pilot light light even when doing exactly what you did in your video. Do you have any advice on what to do? Great video I just wish mine was that simple.

No comments on what to do if the pilot is lit but the furnace won’t fire up to heat the water. Thermocoupler?

Do you know if there is a way to install a electronic igniter on a old tank like this to help from having to use a lighter?
@fullmoonadventureclub4 жыл бұрын
I'm not aware of an electric igniter retrofit kit. He probably just going to need to replace the water heater. They require sensors and igniters and circuit boards and all kinds of stuff.

Thanks for this Jim. I’ve been so afraid to turn mine on . This past summer I finally got comfortable with the fridge being left on. Should a window be cracked or is it safe to have all windows closed while burners are on ?
@fullmoonadventureclub6 жыл бұрын
The water heater in the refrigerator should be just fine as they are vented outside. Your oven and cooktop might require a slight amount of ventilation but usually not a lot. Jim

Great video, thanks! But now that it's lit... what is the recommended use? Once the water reaches the set temperature, does the main burner turn off and just return to pilot light? Will it re-ignite the main burner automatically from the pilot when the water begins to cool below a certain point? Seems like leaving the pilot running all the time will burn up propane. Is it best to go outside and re-lite/turn off every time I need it, or how long does one typically leave it turned on once it's been lit? Any insights? Thanks!

I have exact same questions
@fullmoonadventureclub2 жыл бұрын
Yes to almost all of your questions. The only reason you will have to relight it is because of the wind and believe me it will blow out the pilot. You can try different solutions including tinfoil over partial bit of the vent but you don't want to block it because it needs air flow. it's a science. Basically, what I do is turn it off until someone wants to take a shower or perhaps do dishes and then I go out there and light it and then turn it off. The pilot uses a very negligible amount of propane but I a small amount of propane when your dry camping can add up. Light it when you need it and your main concern will be your black and gray tank levels and your water supply. Propane lasts a week but water storage and supply lasts three days depending on your usage. I hope that helps.
@fullmoonadventureclub2 жыл бұрын
It is completely automatic as long as the wind doesn't blow out the pilot. It is designed to work flawlessly under ideal conditions with no tampering. If the pilot light goes out he has safety features to shut everything down. Light it and forget it under normal operating parameters
@fullmoonadventureclub2 жыл бұрын
Every RV should also be equipped with carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Not so much for the hot water heater but because of the Furnace. Just FYI

Hello, just wondering if a water heater with the electronic ignition can be lit manually. I cannot get my G6A-8E to work. Hard to get service here so I ordered a new circuit board in case that was the issue, but that will take 5 days to get.
@fullmoonadventureclub4 жыл бұрын
It is not recommended. You could have a gas flow problem, a clogged pilot, low battery voltage, or any number of other issues that would cause it not to light. But if it's an automatic system the rule of thumb is usually just to get it serviced if everything else looks okay. You can definitely try replacing the circuit board after you've diagnosed and checked all the other possibilities. But everyone says you should not try to manually light an electronic automatic water heater. I hope that helps. Jim

@@fullmoonadventureclub Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. I will suck it up and shower cold for a week or so. Service coming next Wed.

@@fullmoonadventureclubwas going to try to manually light mine as it is electronic and gas. Why is it not recommended? Is it unsafe to do so?

Hey Jim, love the video !!!! I could do a companion video on how to burn all the hair off your arm trying to light the hot water heater 😀😀 I always seem to get a big flame at first ( Scary ) I get the bic lighter going first then depress the pilot light button. What do you think I'm doing incorrectly? Thanks for another informative video... Mike....
@fullmoonadventureclub6 жыл бұрын
I have had that flame out happen with my water heater at home with old units but never with the RV water heater. There could be a blockage in the burner tube or orifice, insects are attracted to these areas and you may get spider webs in there. Make sure everything is free of debris and then just make sure you do not hear or smell gas with the pilot light off. Make sure your knob is functioning correctly and it is not in the "ON" position when it should be in the "Pilot" position. Maybe that will help you keep whats left of your arm hair. Good luck and happy camping. Jim

What if no water comes out of the valve

It is likely that the water heater is not full of water and should not be lit. Check your water level, water pump, and water heater bypass valves.
