How to light up your Christmas Village

My mother started my village back in the early 90's. It's the Bristol village by Pacific Rim. It was discontinued the year she passed away. I only have 15 buildings, but I have learned a lot from your videos. Every year I expand the landscape with the help of your videos. Thank you so much.

Thank you Miriam! This video was very much needed and helpful. I have been studying my layout and lighting for some time now. I loved how you hid certain lights in the trees/shrubs. I appreciate you running down the different types of light systems, will be getting the field lights soon. I now have a different perspective on what to do with my village. Yes! Batteries were a drag in my very first & second village. After a while I stopped turning it on or stopped buying batteries. The adaptors were game changing! This will be my 4th year building. Most of my village is displayed in the cabinets on either side of our TV. They are behind glass doors and each unit had 3 glass shelves. I do leave it up all year, but don't turn the lights on except Thanksgiving through January. I will look for the 6 light strings. That would greatly reduce the number of cords.

Hi Miriam! You are 100% right your village will grow. I have used the spotlights & field lights. Love the idea of hiding the spots in the trees. After 1 year I switched to the Lemax A/C adapters. One problem with the C7 bulbs is heat, so I would not put them under snow blankets. I also use a timer for my power strips it is scheduled to go on at about 4 pm and goes off at 10 pm. However, I am changing to a remote plug that you showed in one of your videos from last year. Keep these great tips coming. Thank You!!!!

Hi Miriam , I set up a little Christmas village each year which seems to get larger and larger every year. The advice about using six bulb strands is a great idea. I use a lot of Lemax buildings that come with I think 7 watt bulbs. That is a lot of wattage on my 2 outlets. What I did was swap out my bulbs for led bulbs which I got from Amazon. They're not quite as bright depending on which bulbs you use yellow or bright. I like yellow its a softer light coming out of the buildings. I use a ton of power strips. You go from seven watts to less than 1.1 The game changer for me was that I started using Kasa smart plugs on my lay out. I linked plugs to my wi fi and now run most my stuff on my phone. The plugs alow you to set on off schedules which allows the village to turn on automaticly. My three trains run and turn on and off every hour. Get a couple plugs and try it. You will love it. Ms Brown your question for our "Christmas Queen of Villages" was a fantastic question to ask! I have many dark areas of my villages and tried to add more light to those areas. Miriam's suggestions are the tops!!! I do use the Lemax Spot Lights, Field Lights and a variety of street lights all from LEMAX at ehobbytools or Michaels Craft store (at discounted prices after the holidays). Here suggestions for hiding the lights in trees or snow blankets...went over my head! Never gave it a thought!! AC power an absolutely MUST, if I purchase a house or piece for my village that only runs on batteries, it is returned or immediately goes to Ebay. It's a big pain to change those batteries already in your village when their power begins to fade..OH, THE PAIN!! Multiply lights with one plug a must (Walmart , buy early that go fast around Halloween)! This video is in my personal TOP 10 videos from Miriam. VERY WELL DONE, from my favorite Christmas Queen!

Miriam, don't feel bad about still having your village up this late in the year. I once left mine up for two years! I removed the "Christmas touches" and left it as a village. It required a lot of careful dusting but as I had hand painted every building, animal and person I wanted to enjoy it, and I did. I am a battery girl when it comes to candles and other Christmas decorations (on timers of course) but everyone needs to listen to you regarding the lighting of the village. Power is the only way to go. One flip of a switch and you have magic! Thank you for sharing your tips. I love the spotlights and will have to get some..

I have several comments for this tutorial - but I will limit them :) First of all I don't use the single cords either, I use several Dept 56 20 and/or 6 light cord sets all over my village. Wherever I have a broader space to light we just put a 'dead' bulb in the socket at the gap and everything still works. Second, I am constantly teased because YES your village will grow! I started many years ago with 3 Christmas Carol houses for the top of an antique radio and by the next year we had moved it to a card table and now - four 6' tables that span 2 rooms! Miriam doesn't lie! The only reason I don't have more houses is I don't have any more ROOM. Two words for new villagers especially ADAPTERS and REMOTES!!! One other thing - we bought a wireless remote socket control that plugs into the wall that will turn on all the village at once, or in zones. We have four zones - two in one room and two in the other. As always Miriam - you have given me another idea!

14:40 Dept. 56 makes a multi cord with 20 lights. It is a little more expensive but it save me a bunch of extension cords!

You can also make rock shapes with styrofoam, aluminum foil or clay. You make your own customized covers for your spotlights.🎄

I have a specific lighting question - I ordered 2 of the Lemax Field Lights to help light the sunroom side of my village. I need some suggestions for how to disquise the tops of the light poles. I am going to use shaper sheet to cover the base and a long, round styrofoam 'tube' to make a tree trunk to cover the pole, but since I don't use foliage for any trees, I'm not sure what to do with the top. Perhaps twigs stuffed into the styrofoam tree trunk with the light pole? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for all of the tips! I have a non-lighting question. I’m putting my village on a table that’s about 5 ft long by 17 inches deep. Do you know if any train sets could be set up in an oval shape to work on my table? The ones I’ve looked at appear to have train tracks that are too wide

Try smaller scale train like HO, the O gauge trains require a lot more room

You are very welcome Diana! I have an HO scale and I don’t think it is even small enough to run 17” wide. I think when I tried it out the thinnest could get the track was 22” wide. A “N scale” is even smaller than and HO scale however, the engines and boxcars are very small and it really wouldn’t be to scale with the village figurines and buildings. I will pull my tracks out later and let you know the smallest width I am able to create.

Hey Diana, I put my track together and it is actually about 3 feet wide. Have you considered a trolly system instead? It runs in a straight line. You can also buy additional track for it if you want to run the trolly longer. You are hilarious. We all have the same problem. :-). If you aren't already, try adding layers to your display to incorporate more houses into your space. I have gotten to the point where I don't display all my christmas village houses every year.

But I just googled "Walmart Christmas village string of lights c7 and and I can't find that 6 string from Walmart. A super easy way is to add fairy lights to your village. You can add them to your evergreen trees and they will light up a space nicely. You can also string them on dowel rods and have them look like Christmas lights.
