This was the best thing ever. Followed all the steps and I ended up with 2 fantastic displays. Just have to pair the remote(s) to see if I can use just one, otherwise I'll have to use 2. Thank you so much!!

nice, thanks. Most other videos go with cheap amazon LED strips with cutting/soldering etc. Something a bit more straightforwards like this is very accessible

I would not discount being able to achieve a similar effect with strip lights and angled brackets, but I definitely prefer the ease of use from Ikea. The diffusion of the lights is also nice.

That’s good to IKEA has a lighting system for this shelf. I have a BILLY used for model supplies and could see adapting another one or two like this. Good easy to follow video.

Thanks! I tried to include as much of my process as made sense and I know I didn't record some of the steps near the end because I was just so excited to get it lit up. I also decided to make this video because they used to have another lighting system that could be used with the Billy, but they discontinued it and I thought this was the next best thing.

I was afraid the Översidian wouldnt fit the Billy after learning that the the successor to my current lights (which would be Norrfly) is also out of stock again. Guess that's what you get for waiting too long. Video was on point and assured me I can use the Översidian lights, thanks a lot.

Thanks for making this video, very helpful. I had a question about wiring. Assuming that there's a shelf with 5 lights, how are you powering them? Are you plugging all 5 lights to a spike buster that then connects to the wall socket? Or do the wires connect with each other to create a single wall socket connection?

The strips all plug into a power hub with slots for 10 I believe which acts as an AC adapter into the wall.

Hi! First of all, thanks for the vid! I just did build exactly your setup for my miniatures but i forgot to buy the controller ... My question is, if the lights are at 100% light when i use them without the controller/dimmer, or are they cabable of going lighter when i use the controler? In case they are at 100% without using it and the controller only works for dimming it down, i would consider not to buy it cause for that i can just use another device. Thanks again for your video!!! I was searching for weeks for a good solution. Greetings from germany!

I hope you like the shelf setup as much as I do and I'm glad to hear my video was helpful! I believe the lights are at 100% if you turn them on and off without the controller. To be honest, I do not use the dimming feature with the controller so if you are happy with it, I would not bother with the controller.

@@orville424 I found the cable you are referring to. It is a very curious case to say the least. It should be providing enough power that the color temperature of the lights would not be affected. Did you buy the oversidan lights?
@HaohmaruHL
@HaohmaruHL Жыл бұрын
Just built mine and I like how easy it was but I wish Oversidan weren't so thicc and didn't take as much vertical space. Feels like shelves are much narrower than they should. For example if you are going to put some figures/statues especially on the lower shelves the Oversidans will cut off their heads from your view if not looking at the Billy from afar. Wonder if there's a less noticeable subtle led solution I could use. Especially with good diffusion effect? I've browsed some amazon ones but they are full of mixed reviews. For some reason my local ikea doesn't have that fancy wireless controller and instead we only have the simple on/off one. Also, any good tips on cabling in case you would want to adjust shelf height in the future? Wouldn't want to be left with a hole right in the middle.
@leoalpha7
@leoalpha7 Жыл бұрын
One option may be to drill holes vertically in the back of the shelves and route all the cables up or down and out the back of the Billy. Alternatively, you could just run the cables out of the front of the Billy and around the side, but they would be more visible.

@leoalpha7
@leoalpha7 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it is either really. Ikea did a nice job of getting a pretty neutral white almost like daylight, but obviously not as bright. I definitely prefer the look over explicitly warm or cool lights.

How many light bars can the 30W power supply support? Would you need 2 to light up 2 Billy's? It looks like it only supports 9 connections. Would you mind posting a pic of the light connection setup?
@leoalpha7
@leoalpha7 Жыл бұрын
Each wireless power supply has a connector that supports 9 light bars. I'm not sure if they sell larger hubs, but with only 9 connections you would need at least two to fully light two Billy bookshelves using this method. If there is something specific you would like a picture of, please let me know and I can make a community post.

@@leoalpha7 So you had to buy two power supplies to setup two Billy's? In the video description I thought you mentioned one would work for two Billy's. I've got two I'd like to set up myself and what you used is perfect and the best option I've seen so far. I'd been thinking about LED strips but I neveriked how they'd look Mind sharing Ikea links to the items you purchased and quantities needed for two? I don't have an Ikea that close to me so I want to make sure I order the right stuff or make one two hour drive count...lol As for a pic, I was curious how all the connections were handled. The lights to the power supplies and all that fun stuff. I'm new to this stuff so I want to make sure I get it right.

@@michaelwooddell9001 I apologize if I incorrectly stated how many Billy bookshelves I have. At the moment I only have one Billy bookshelf with one lightstrip per shelf, one 30W power adapter with 9 connectors, and a tradfri remote that is wireless, but doesn't function with the app. You just have to pair it to the power adapter independently. I'm away from my setup at the moment, but I'll try to update the description with links and make a community post as soon as I can. Each lightstrip consumes 3.5 watts max since they use LEDs so the power consumption is actually pretty reasonable. It helps to not have the lights on constantly.

For smaller sized Billy’s, what lighting would you recommend?
@leoalpha7
@leoalpha7 Жыл бұрын
If you still want to buy from IKEA, the MITTLED kitchen light and STOTTA cabinet light are the only ones that are short enough to fit in the small Billy. The downside is that the lights shine straight down rather than backwards on an angle. Unfortunately, I do not have any other recommendations for the small Billy unless you want to buy lights from somewhere else. You could also buy puck lights which are pretty popular with some collectors. There is a MITTLED puck light available from IKEA.

Do you think that this would also work with their Hemnes bookshelves
@leoalpha7
@leoalpha7 Жыл бұрын
This will likely work with the Hemnes bookshelves. However, the shelves are 3.5" longer than the Billy bookshelves, so be careful if you buy the Oversidan. It looks like the 28" lights are the largest you can fit from the Oversidan collection. There may be longer light sets, but just make sure they fit your shelves.

Yes, I apologize for that. As the project neared it's completion, I skipped showing a few steps as I was more excited to see it completed. I assure you that the 3/8" hole drilled in the back of the shelf allows for just enough clearance to thread the plug through the back of the shelf.
