How to Link Two 12 Volt Batteries - Double the Power!

This video is a quick video on how to connect two 12 volt batteries. Connecting two batteries will double the life of a battery when in use. For my trolling motor, I can troll for 5 hours.
I have created this page to share information with the hopes of helping you become a better fisherman and catch more fish. I do this with the heart of a teacher in mind while trying to make it simple and fun for anyone!

Thanks for the video. You saved my ass.. Last night I hooked up 2 12v = 24v (accidentally) and blew my truck battery up. Well actually what it did was blew the covers off the truck battery. This was in an RV.

Good video .Explained clearly and simple .A pal gave me two 12v 24amp/hour batteries .I want to join them like this to give 48 amps .....When I want to charge them with my house 240v car battery charger do I connect the positive lead to one and the negative to the other battery to charge the 2 linked together batteries evenly at the same time ?

I have a 12v Terrova riptide and I was wondering can I still hook up 2 12v batteries to it or is that going to ruin it??? With the supply chain being so bad they didn't offer the 24v so I got the 12 v and I want to be able to go away somewhere and spend a weekend on the water without having to recharge the battery... thanks!

Yes you can hook them up together and run your 12v trolling motor off of it.

Hey there, great video. Does the weaker battery drain the stronger one? Also, would it make a difference if on the second battery, I grounded the negative to the frame, and then connected the positive to the other battery?

Yes, they will draw on each other if they have different capacities or even if the same capacity but one have a bad cell. Don't use your new one with some crappy old one that you kept in the garage for the last 5 years, keep them the same if possible for longer life.

Good Stuff, been looking into buying another battery to double the time out on the water. Question though, Will I still be able to charge them while they are both connected like this or would i have to charge them individualy? And would I connect the charger cables just like connecting the trolling motor cables to the battery or would it be different?

Keep everything connected....Just hook the charger to one battery and both will charge.

Hi, if I add another new barter and run it parallel, each battery is 100amp hours. I know my voltage will remain a 12v and my amp hours doubles to 200amp hours. Will this hurt my 200hp boat engine with the extra amp hours??? I've been told yes and told no. I'm confused. Thank you

This will sound crazy: I’m putting a little inflatable catamaran setup together for near shore blue crabbing. Not only am I a weak old guy, but my launching logistics are not trailer to ramp. I’ll be dragging the boat in. Because of this, I want to use those smaller half size batteries they sell for kayaks and such, because they’re so much lighter. Anyway to put THREE in tandem? If not, I would go to a 2 and 2 system with 4 batteries total, if I think I really need it.

The Fishing Educator Thanks for the fast reply! I haven’t really researched which type yet, but now that I think about it, it’s really no big deal for me to hook to a third battery if the two ever die. Doubtful anyway because of how much amps I’ll be drawing; I’ll be going slow and not long distances. My main concern is hauling a full size battery. (I’m at that age and over.) Plus, with the smaller batteries, on an inflatable, being able to split up the battery weight can’t hurt. I was thinking about a Torqeedo as my best solution, but the prices are just crazy. And I’ll be mostly saltwater.

The Fishing Educator I might go with two sets of these because they’re so small. No rush, since I’m waiting for the boat to come in stock. You're doubling the capacity but the voltage still stays the same thats called a paralel connection.
