I’ve gotten a lot of questions asking how I store my collection of over 9,000 CDs. So this video shows how I do that but also goes through recent CD’s purchased during NYC’s 100 day lockdown to give you an idea of how I decide what to listen to.

@@BrendonSnyder my mind is blown right now. My collection is steadily growing as I love hitting yard sales where I often make a cash offer for everything and ecently picked up a large haul that I'm still going thru. I also picked up a lot of beatles solo cds 2 big under bed shoe containers for 25 bucks. I wasnt going to stop but I'm glad I did.

I usually "thin the herd" by selling off dead weight when I run out of room on my shelf.
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 3 жыл бұрын
I used to sell off “dead weight” also but over the years I’d miss certain albums and have to rebuy them so now I don’t sell any of them. Plus you get next to nothing selling CDs anymore so it’s not worth it in my opinion. Now I just move the “dead weight” to boxes that are stored out of the way. At some point I’m always really glad I hung onto them and it’s great to go dig them out.

I agree, I sold a lot of CDs when I ran out of room at my old place as I thought I was going to go minimalist. After time, I deeply regretted it and I eventually felt had to re-buy those albums once I moved to a bigger apartment. Even with less played material, I found that my tastes can change or I want to revisit music I rarely played when I first bought it.

There are albums I listen to when I first get them and that just don’t click with me. It used to be I would sell them and go buy something different. Now I just put them away and wait and revisit them later when I’m more in the mood. There are times I wonder why I didn’t like it and it becomes a new favorite. So I’ve learned not to be so quick to get rid of something. Like you said tastes change over time.

I’m the same way. I can’t immediately file new ones away. I have boxes that are dedicated to new releases by year. So that if an album came out in 2019 or 2020, I know where to go to find it. I also leave lots of new ones sit out around my stereo as I love seeing the album covers and presentations of them.

Where do you find the time to listen to 9000 cd's.... I have a problem listening to 3500 cd's and always don't know what to pick because they're all good. many I haven't listened to in decades because I always buy new ones and i focus on them.....!!!!!! TYR is my fave of the Black Sabbath albums with Tony Martin but Eternal Idol is a close second. And I’m always listening to music. It’s never not on. Even watching tv sometimes I put on subtitles and mute the tv to listen to music instead. I sleep with it on too. Plus in NYC I ride the subway so I’m always listening on my commute to the office. And if I’m not on a call, my headphones are playing music while I work. I find every conceivable way to get my listening in.

Brendon, I appreciate you showing and explaining how you store your cds. I had been looking everywhere for boxes to match the size of the ones you use. I didn't realize until now that you customize standard size boxes. Do you measure by eye or ruler using scissors to cut before assembling each box? Also, do you collect vinyl? If so, any suggestions for vinyl storage? Thanks, Rick
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 3 жыл бұрын
I measure each box with a ruler. Make a could guide points to follow. Then using a metal ruler straight edge to cut against, inline it up on my guide points so I get a straight cut and use and x-acto blade to cut the box down to side. Also I do it while the box is flat to make it easier. Then fold it later after cutting. For vinyl I do the same thing but use different boxes. Vinyl box sides are a little harder to find. So I keep an eye out at my grocery store until I see one that’s perfect and then request if I can have it.

I never got rid of my 2,000 Cd's, 1,200 albums, hundreds of cassettes, and even 8 tracks.. The value is in the physical product, and not some electronic signal on your phone.. I've only purchased digitally recordings that are not available, or are too costly, in physical formats.. Stuff like Real Life, "Heartland", LP.. Starz, "Live in Louisville ", Wall of Voodoo, "Dark Continent", Head East, "Gettin' Lucky/Head East(s/t)", Pylon, "Chomp" or "Gyrate"..(if you can find them).., and would like to find Cindy Bullens, "Desire Wire" or Topaz, "Topaz"(s/t), not available but are on you tube.. I would recommend any of those, and also Bad Boy, "Back to Back".. which I got from Rock Candy.. Credits to you for amassing such a collection..

Carl Dixon lives around the corner from us in Haliburton Ontario..we see him quite frequently in town ..great guy and great vocals ..we also have a wide assortment of cds collected over the years my husband picked up 12 pioneer Elite carousel CD player that hold 301 CDs which you can program the group name and album..he would travel all over and pick them up ..he had 2 that he bought brand new and they were quite expensive at the time now there a mere fraction of what they were worth new ! Luckily Compact disc's are not popular anymore and people got rid of these CD players cheap and they were easy to find Only thing we don't like about them is the fact that the disc covers are in storage and really miss them being out and displayed ..we definitely will change the boxes they are in to the ones you are using ..what size are they ?

Hey thanks for sharing this. Very useful, I will stop by Staples tomorrow to get some. I have probably over 1500 cds. I like a lot of the late 80’s, early 90’s, hair band stuff as well. Do you have all pristine cds when you receive them? Do you ever replace the cases? A lot of my cases have scuffs, cracked, or sticker residue. Some have been damaged due to shipping or buying from thrift stores even though cds and paperwork is good. Thought about buying some bulk new cases on eBay instead of trying to buff them. I’ve been asked about that one too. My most “rare” or “valuable” CDs. It’s really all subjective. Things I find rare or valuable may just be because the album didn’t sell and people generally consider the album bad. But that aside, I can see it would make for an interesting presentation. I’ll have to ponder on it a bit and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the suggestion, they’re always welcome.

I have over 16,000 CDs including several hundred box sets of various sizes all in one room and all on display with easy access to every title. Everything is in alphabetical order. I also organize each artist in order of original release date oldest to newest within the alphabetical order. Every spine is viewable. I custom built standard CD jewel case size shelving along each wall from floor to 10’ ceiling with the reachable top shelves deeper that are deep enough to hold any oversize box set. The box sets follow alphabetically by artist the standard jewel case CDs below them - all the way around the room. I added controllable lighting in eight sets around the room so that every title is lit and easily readable. The room is large enough to include on one end a top end audio system with 18 different playback and recording formats that are controlled in a central mix system. My 8,000 vinyl albums and 45’s are housed in this floor to ceiling system cabinet. At the other end of the room a current vintage large widescreen offers glorious video with awesome surround sound. My many music videos flank the big screen TV. The head in the system sends audio to all rooms of my three story home as well as to all sides of the exterior of my home so that I can hear audio anywhere in my yard and garden. I have a custom German handmade 9.2 surround system in this studio room as well as stereo or surround in all of the rooms of my home. Been collecting since I was five starting in 1964 with “Introducing The Beatles”. May sound like a brag. Not my intention. I am a music nut like the rest of you and I assembled this piece by piece over these many years and I chose a profession in the pro audio industry that gave me the contacts and the means for assembling what I have today. I haven’t many years left but I will enjoy what is to come. Thank you for reading this.

Thank you for the tip on cd storage! With the standard Staple boxes, the handles provide extra support to keep the boxes secured. If possible, could you demonstrate step by step with video when you are ready to prepare a new box? Have a great day!!!

Do you get full albums because you like every song? Or do you get full albums because you like a couple of songs on some? For the second question, is it because you want to keep the full CD quality audio. Btw, I would so do both. I like listening to full albums like "loose" by Nelly furtado and some other albums that I only listen to some tunes from. Reason why I do this is because I want to get the most out of my audio, even iv I just like afew songs. But yeh sometimes if my friends have an album then I don't need to buy it. I could actually rip/ copy the disc and keep the songs I want, then I burn them to a seperate CDR at 1x speed on cdburnerxp.

Yea you can take them on a plane. If you’re checking the luggage then they have to be protected as good as if you were mailing them. If you’re taking them to your seat on the plane then not special packaging is needed.

I’m sure hiding many of your CDs in boxes is a small price to pay for being able to live in such a great city. Of course nothing beats having your music collection on full display in a massive library. Do you keep your discs in alphabetical order? Not too long ago I took the time to alphabetize my music, going A-Z by category (classic rock, blues, jazz, country and so forth). However, the one major nuisance is having to adjust pretty much your whole collection in order to put new discs in their proper places.
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 3 жыл бұрын
I do keep them alphabetical but just grouped by letter so it’s a bit easier to insert a new album. However I hold out new releases in separate boxes. Like o have a box that is holding all of the 2020 releases and another for 2019. I don’t usually file away at the time that I get them. Generally I only do a major refilling one a year. It’s a full day process and sometimes longer. But I’d never give any of them up.

@@qdaveq6597 My collection has about 500 to 600 discs, and I store them on a shelving unit alphabetically by artist. If I buy a new CD I make room for it by moving one disc down a shelf all the way down the unit. It must be much more complicated for a 9000 disc collection!
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 3 жыл бұрын
It is alphabetical. But it’s just all of one letter grouped together so I can place an artist of the same letter in at any point. But the organization is broken down by genera like Rock, Hair Bands, Heavy Metal, and Alternative. As new one come in I gather them up like you saw in the video as newest arrives they got their own box and will stay like that for 6 months to a year before I try to incorporate them into the overall collection. That part is an all day process with lots of reorganization. Accessing them is not too bad. I have them broken down enough to know right where to go to access what I’m looking for. But also I keep my top albums out on the rack of 800 that you see behind me.

Hello. Thank you for this informative and interesting video. I found your video because I am doing some research regarding moving a large music library. Eventually, I will be moving from upstate New York to Springfield, Illinois. I am a volunteer radio DJ with approximately 6,000 CDs. Currently, most of them are in CD racks/shelving units. But I obviously can't move them that way. So I have been trying to determine the best way to safely move my collection approximately 800 miles in a U-haul truck/trailer. In your opinion, would the type of boxes you are using now be suitable for storing the CDs for a long haul move? If not, what would you suggest? Any advice from you and others reading this comment would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again. Best, Jason
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, yes the boxes would be great as long as they are packed tight so that CD’s can’t slide around inside. The lids would need to be taped on. Then it’s just up to the people moving you to understand that what’s inside is fragile and the boxes while sturdy can not be thrown around. I’ve moved with my collection like this before and only ended up with a few cracked cases. It’s how I plan to do it in the future when I move again.

Now where’d I Put that Greg Lake solo album . . . That’s gotta suck when you get a musical craving for an artist that’s on one of the bottom rows. Or when you have to add a new purchase to an existing full box. You need to put your architectural skills to work and build a custom shelving unit, making them easily accessible. Not to mention the effect all the weight of 11 boxes are going to have of the poor 12th box in each row. I restricted my collecting to only top priority favorite bands years ago. Being a family man with 4 kids, luckily Spotify came along. So I indulge through Spotify, KZbin and other online streaming. Saves space and money, a lot easier to satisfy a spur of the moment musical craving too. It was tough to over come the gratification of having the physical media but had to learn to go without when records where phased out. It’s a sacrifice that I had to make with cd collecting, family or music collection basically.
@BrendonSnyder

I’ll never give up music collecting or the physical format. I do stream in order to have access to music as soon as it’s released and stuff I don’t want to buy but want to hear. But I won’t limit myself in what I collect. And surprisingly it’s not had to access or find what I’m looking for. Sure if I had the space and all the money in the world I’d build something but that’s not an option. So boxes and continued collecting it is....oh there’s that Greg Lake solo album!!
