Nice video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you tried - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (do a google search)? It is a great one of a kind guide for learning piano fast without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend Sam finally got cool results with it.

I am actually of the second group (want to challenge myself). I can listen to absolutely anything and like it. Jazz is the only form music that I don't understand at all. Like abstract art pieces. People can spend hours talking about it, all I see is someone who had a heart attack with a paint brush.

I feel a bit less alone now, because I feel like I am tone deaf when I'm trying to understand jazz. Although I listen to and enjoy so many other musical genres. Same as you, I want to get out of my comfort zone. Did you improve your understanding since that comment?

@@HaricotPointu try Snarky Puppy. They’re the ones that got me into jazz

This is really inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing your perspective. Almost any and everything that I’ve learnt about jazz so far is from your channel. If I’m stuck somewhere I always refer to your meticulously organized videos and I find something that helps me out every single time. Thank you so much once again.

would really love it if you can analyze a jazz song so we can see what each member actually did

I loved that!!! Today, for the first time, I listened to jazz. I started by listening SEVERAL times to Giant Steps, by John Coltrane. It was EXTREMELY confusing, i didn’t understand anything at all. I will listen again and pay more attention to the soloist and the conversations... but as you said, perhaps I should start with something lighter

Hey man, really great stuff here. Did you ever do a Harmonic Minor modes video the way you did for Melodic Minor? You went through MM chords, as well as what's actually seen in practice. I'd love a round 2 but for HM!

I've felt lost my feeling of sublime as I learn more about music in recent years. I didn't find any idea or cure about my feeling. Do you know any resource about this feeling? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion. You're one of my favorite youtubers.

I think listening to more "advanced" things, or more challenging music will help with it. I know friends who are very well versed in music theory etc that listen to more challenging stuff and they're like reborn again.

My biggest problem with art, and jazz specifically, is that art or music shouldn't rely on the observer's experience with previous styles and context. It should stand on its own. If you have to force yourself to enjoy a piece of art, music, or literature, than what's the point?
@georgethebugeater79503 жыл бұрын
Humans naturally like what’s presented to them. Things they grew up on and understand. In order to enjoy other cultures and arts, you have to have the ability to want to learn to love things. Some things take a certain understanding to enjoy (that any one can grasp if they try). Humans have to learn to enjoy things that they aren’t used to. Some things take a deeper understanding to enjoy and that’s why jazz is seen almost as an underground movement these days, whereas in the 20s people listened to jazz everyday; children listened to jazz. Everyone had their interest at the end of the day. I like a good fast food burger, but the same way an accomplished musician would say that certain music is lazy and uncreative; a Chef would say the same about eating at a fast food joint. Most people don’t care, but I’m not going to argue with the chef if he says it’s not high quality.

okay, so i think i got it. it goes something like this: 1. be a life-long professional musician 2. something something something tap your leg am i doing it rite?

Is a common fear, that if you "know" then you can't be original or appreciate the art, but to me, is only a fear, never happens in real life. I never met anyone that say "since I learn harmony or how to read notation, I can't enjoy it anymore", but met lot of musicians or aficionado that bare with that fear.

can anyone tell me why you need to listen for II V I's? I'm learning a piano, and my teacher hi lights the II V I's (I ran out of of money so can't ask her now). Is this because its like a device, you know something new is coming?

Any art and music in particular is to trigger emotions, excite, boost energy. If you need a masters degree to understamd and appreciate music through its complexity, then there is something fundamentally wrong with this music. If someone appreciates a music through its complexity and by breaking the harmony down to pieces, the person is just a snob. You should feel the music not have to understand it.
