In Poland we have something similar to your potato pancakes. We call them "potato cakes" (placki ziemniaczane). To make them we rasp potatoes very very finely (or blend for that matter) with a bit of onion. We drain excess water, add an egg, a bit of flour (to make the dough more sticky which you achieved by adding the rice), salt and pepper, and fry small but thick pancakes (ca. 10 cm diameter). They're crunchy on the outside but soft inside. We eat them with sour cream and/or sugar or plane. If we happen to fry them as big as you then we call them "cake a la Hungarian" (placek po węgiersku) and eat them with an aromatic meaty slightly spicy goulash :) Mmmmm. Yammy!

you could try the egg banana & ground chic peas together to make some pancakes, that way it'd be less omlety. Also you should try baking a whole potato, half it, scoop out the innards leaving the jacket intact & mash it together with something like your mayo, then place the mixture back in the jacket & put it under a grill for 5 mins. once its done just add a topping of your choice like coleslaw, cheese or sour cream to name a few. Its dirt cheep & really good mixture of different flavours & textures.

Hey, really enjoying these videos. I just had to let you know that in Latvia (most probably other of our neighbouring countries) potato pancakes are a thing, they consist of just potato, grated as fine as possible, eggs and salt. I like to squeeze out the excess moisture out of the grated potatoes before adding the egg, just to help along with the binding, shaping and frying. I know they don't sound like much, but they are really good! They go along with both savoury and sweet condiments too!!

Potato pancakes are a pretty big part of Lithuanian cuisine. We simply squeeze out as much water from that same batter you just made (just without rice) and add an egg and little bit of flour to the mixture for some bonding. Some add minced meat as a filling, which is done in some regions and most Lithuanians love it

Lol I don't think taking condiments is stealing. I work at a Carl's Jr and if someone came in and asked me for 10 ranch cups and 10 BBQ cups I'd give it to them haha
They cost money to make and transport and whatnot, but quite honestly if you're taking them to use them (which is safe to assume if you're living on a budget) then it's literally no problem. I worked at a little restaurant on a college campus, and there'd be people who take handfuls of condiment packets and often left with them. I didn't mind at all so long as I didn't see half of them abandoned on a table when I did my cleaning rounds after the rush ended.

Koreans have a dish very similar to your potato pancake. The process of making it is quite similar too but you wouldn't blend it. Just finely chop it because back in the days, there wasn't such a thing as an electric blender. It's super delicious if you can make it slightly crunchy. Soft inside, crunchy outside.
@AquaFurs7 жыл бұрын
No problem taking a few condiment squeeze packs. Stores all want to increase traffic and are happy to lure you in with little freebees. Besides, sooner or later you'll buy something there if you haven't already, and it all equals out. Don't think the stores don't know what's going on ... they figure its worth it. Just don't fill your backpack :0)

Somewhere some chef is using this series to make a menu of 10,000% profit dishes but we'll see those prices and be like "nah, I seent my dude make that meal for $1.37 and some stolen condiment packets." but I'll cave in and buy some $12 crab cakes anyways because I'm a morbidly obese man with little self control trapped in a borderline obese dude's body.

@mfcyeahyouknowme9 жыл бұрын
Arriss3 No matter HOW MUCH one person can save on food, it wouldn't equate to having a humongous penthouse in the most expensive to live place in the entire US next to San Francisco... You have to be VERY WEALTHY to live where he lives, I know from personal experience. (From being in NYC, not being rich! LOL) I understand what you're saying, but this is not his actual situation. He has a very very high paying career, he merely chooses to try being thrifty to experience what it is like in those other, poorer countries (where $3 a day is their actually food budget). He did this awesome $3 budget meal plan to experience what it is like for people in that country. Very cool, right? But Still, he is very well off and no amount of saving on groceries could do that alone (or else I'd be wealthy too!! LOL) He said those reasons I just mentioned in the first video if you want to check). Have a nice night friend. :)

Your meals are very creative! I got sweet potatoes at Target for a $1.29 each. I got them for a party of 10 so it was pricy. Lots of rural areas don’t have that many grocery stores around. 8 cents sounds like a very cheap price. You got to have the time to cook every day and keep it interesting. It’s a great challenge though and even if a regular person can’t cook 3 times a day, it’s worth a try!

I'm a full-time educator, so restricting my choices week-to-week makes it so I eat very well and cook delicious things, but I don't get overwhelmed by OMG SO MANY CHOICES. This week's foods are tofu, a red onion, red bell peppers, kale, jasmine rice, couscous, red lentils, chickpeas (from the freezer, I batch-cooked TONS last month), dried cranberries, peanut butter, sweet potatoes, two cans of fire roasted tomatoes, a package of bagels from a local bakery, coconut milk yogurt, berbere spice mix, flax meal, cacao nibs, maple syrup, soy sauce, and some frozen vegan gyoza. On the menu I have berbere spiced lentils, Moroccan couscous/chickpea salad, marinated baked tofu, roasted sweet potatoes with leftover marinade, sauteed kale and tofu stir fry, yogurt with flax and cacao nibs, toasted bagels with peanut butter, tomato/chickpea/red pepper soup, and of course the gyoza for the night when I'm stuck at work until 7. Cost me about $50 and I'm feeding two people.

I love these $3 a day videos! I'm pretty much broke all the time after bills are paid, and I get pretty creative with my food, but I also love seeing other people do it too. I wanted to be a chef when I was a teenager, and I cooked for my parents all the time from the age of nine. My mum actually trusted me to make dinners by myself at an early age, and surprisingly I never injured myself too badly aside from maybe a little burn here and there. I never cut myself either. My mum is also a great cook, and she rarely used recipes. So, I learned how to be creative, and just make shite up on the fly. Anyway, please make more food that is cheap, but delicious! I've gotten a lot of ideas from you.. Although, a lot of what you make, I've actually made too. I'm going to be making cheap kimchi soon. I love kimchi fried rice, or putting kimchi on a veggie burger. I'm vegetarian, so I can't really make your meat "recipes", but I do buy soy crumbles. There's a discount store near me that I buy food from frequently, and I bought some Quorn meatless crumbles, and I also bought some Chick'n strips from morning star farms. So, I can replace the chicken in your recipes for the Chick'n strips I have. I know you made these videos a little over a year ago, but I'd still love to see some new food on the cheap from you.. Have a great day! またね!☆〜(ゝ。∂)♪

Blended potato pancakes are commonly called kartoffelpfannkuchen, or just Kartoffel (in my house.) :P The right blend with onions is AMAZING with sour cream and molasses on top.

I grew up on potato pancakes, but it was what my mom would make out of leftover mashed potatoes :) Didn't have a latke until I was in my 20s.

Potato pancakes here in sweden are called "Raggmunk" and is a traditional dish here served together with lingonberry jam, "Onionsauce" (wich is a sauce made from cream and fried onions.) and Pork bacon. It's delicious!

I love these videos. it inspired me to take the $3.00 a day challenge. I waste a lot of food letting it go bad but money restriction prevents that while forcing me to pick smarter and healthier options.

Anyone else hate the sound of someone eating? I don't know why, but I can't stand it. 7:24 is cringe central.

hey, hotdog! I missed you in the gathering last Wednesday. It's actually a very wide source of cringe for many people. I broke up with a girl because she was an open mouth smacker like this guy is. Just close your mouth and eat like a human. We have lips for a reason...
