it might look a bit tricky, but it is indeed really easy to perform. and i just want to appreciate one more time the fact that the DX7 was one of the very first synths that featured MIDI, making it so easy to restore all the sounds in case the internal battery had gone flat. i just love it :)

Nice to hear your voice again! I'd love to see more reviews of sampler libraries, Fairlight CMI, or a sequel review of other synths in your collection!

I still use a near 30 year old Midiman Midisport 4x4 interface with all my older synths. Still works perfectly, even with the newer Win 10/11 M-Audio drivers.

Yay! The Midisport! I have the 2x2. Haven't seen it in awhile! On Mac, Sysex Librarian always worked for me.

Incredible, my first MIDI interface was a Midiman (I still have it, the case was metal) but not USB, it was using an AppleTalk cable. Thanks for the video BTW!

One thing I did like with digital synths is that quite a few allowed you to restore factory presets from a special command (either UI option or holding button(s) while powering on).

Great video. Are there some sites where i can select my own banks insted of just loading the preset bank A? Lets say i only want all the different EPs

The site mentioned in the video has lots of banks

I have a DX7II that I converted to the FD version with a Gotek USB drive (with FlashFloppy firmware), do you know any websites with disk images ? when I search I only find .sysex files. I tried a cheap midi interface and it works just playing live, but when I try to send sysex it bombs out (I think the cheap midi interface is sending too fast for the old DX).

Midi is such a pain on the DX7 I modded mine with the Grey Matter E! board.

DX7, Korg Opsix or software, that is the question.

I'm trying to load bank to my DX7 today, I'm using a USB to MIDI cable and Bome SendSX, the SendSX software on my PC keeps freezing when I hit Send button, I tried limit the transfering speed as well as the split long sys ex option, still can't fix the problem. Any idea what may have caused this issue and how could I solve it?

As an owner of a DX7, as well as many other vintage synths, I have a related question. What's the best way to hook up multiple vintage, pre-USB-enabled synths, to a PC or Mac? I have multiple midi-to-usb cables (usb on one end, midi in + out on the other) like the Roland UM-ONE, but they are very expensive (often up to £40 each) and have wondered if there are better solutions.
@SynthManiaDotComАй бұрын
Do they have MIDI Thru? If, yes, you can just cascade them with simple/inexpensive MIDI cables. If you want more individual channel control, you could also look at older/used MIDI rack units that can control eight+ channels individually, like older MOTU, Opcode, M-Audio etc.
@BogginMashupsАй бұрын
@@SynthManiaDotCom I hadn’t actually thought of the midi thru approach, so I’ll give it a go, thanks! I’d love to see you do a video on the different approaches as well.

How about an elka-ek 44 or dx21 built in chrous.

I just saw your tutorial video to answer my question i thank you for that but when tried to transfer the sounds this (internal voice midi buffer full) message comes on. What does this mean and do i need to delete something and how do i do it?
@SynthManiaDotComАй бұрын
You probably have to slow down the transfer rate, check the MIDI buffer on your sysex app, and try to set the size to a lower output buffer amount before sending
@VarionJimmyАй бұрын
Try to change the buffer size to 32 bytes. Unfortunately I don’t remember the transfer rate, but something low like 9600 should work.
@angelperez9773Ай бұрын
@VarionJimmy i did that but still dont work can it be the cable im using ? Its a small black rectangular piece that has single usb wire for computer and other side has 2 midi wires for the keyboard
@Psychlist1972Ай бұрын
This problem is why I created the MIDI SysEx Transfer Utility, available for free in the Microsoft Store on Windows.
@VarionJimmyАй бұрын
@@angelperez9773Yes some MIDI interfaces have problem with this for some reason. For example: My TC Helicon USB audio/midi inteface does corrupts the data, but my old M-Audio Midisport 2x2 works perfect. And it might be the cable too. I’m not sure how slow data transfer the DX7 can handle, but to lower the transfer rate makes it more likely that picky interfaces and bad cables work. Edit: Are you sure the file itself is ok? The file should start with “F0 43” (just once) and end with “F7”. You should be able to see that in for example MIDI-Ox (as shown in the video).

how does the dx7 sound compared to Fm8?
@chinossynthesizer705Ай бұрын
You can try an Elka-ek 44, Dx11, or Dx21, Yamaha V2, which is the Japanese version of the Dx11. These 4 operator synths sound very good. I think elka ek-44 and dx21 have built-in chrous. Also, don't get a Dx9 because they come with problems.
