You don't need to be in neutral to engage the center diff. You can lock it up to 30-40mph with your foot off the gas and going straight. The CPU won't let it lock at a certain speed. You can also definitely drive in the snow with the center diff locked. I can't tell you how many times I've had to lock the center diff while driving in the mountains and the roads turn bad. Locking the center diff in a GX470 and 460 also turns off VSC, which makes driving in the snow (and off-road) much easier. I've been driving 4x4s in the north east since the mid 90s and I currently own a '19 460. 4lo on the other hand, you need to be in neutral unless you want to destroy your transfer case.

@@alphawolfadventures1470 Yes. Same process when activating center diff lock in 4Lo. Can be done on-the-fly. 4Lo can be turned on regardless of the status of the center diff lock. To activate 4Lo - stop the vehicle, shift to Neutral, flip 4Lo switch.

yes if you are off-road only... because if you're in road and hit dry pavement suddenly with the center locked you may bind the driveline... but in general any offroading trail/condionon.. lock the center differential.

It's interesting how a 60% rear bias wont hurt the drivetrain on-road, but switch that to 50% and it could damage the drivetrain. Wonder if that applies to all vehicles meaning there are no vehicles that are 50/50 split naturally? Also interesting and nice how that 10% traction is so crucial to the GX design that it warrants that center diff lock feature. Would you use it in 4H? Seems primarily useful for 4L activities over rough incline terrain. Great content btw! Subbed

There’s a limited slip in the transfer case. That allows slippage. When it’s locked there is no slippage and the drivetrain can bind up on hard surfaces.

when unlocked the differential allows for different speeds. When locked it doesn't allow for different speeds, hence offroad only

I've definitely hit that button with my knee going down the highway once or twice. I turned it off pretty quickly each time. I've replaced all differential oils since then. Think i should be worried?

@@nickb1690 Correct. You don't need to be in neutral OR stopped to engage the center diff lock. You should try to be driving in a straight line and ideally foot off gas, but it will still engage regardless while moving.

​@@Shawn-ky2tw Fair enough. I'm just pointing out that it is not true that you need to be stopped and/or in neutral to activate the center diff lock as the video implies. There are many scenarios where it would be detrimental to the vehicle's forward progress and even dangerous (inclement weather/traffic/etc.) if you were to come to a complete stop and shift to neutral prior to activating the center diff lock. The owner's manual and card in driver's side sun visor provide step by step instructions to properly activate the diff lock.

Love your videos very helpful. Got scared when you say put in neutral before engaging center lock driff. Here is what I found from manual: Center differential lock/unlock switch Lock the center differential when your vehicle’s wheels get stuck in a ditch Lock the center differential when your vehicle’s wheels get stuck in a ditch or when driving on a slippery or bumpy surface. The center differential lock indi- cator will come on. Unlock the center differential after the wheels have been freed, or after moving to a flat, non-slippery surface. To unlock the center differential, push the switch again. I always lock center diff when driving on dirt while shifter is in D. Is it gonna damage or bend my axel? Much appreciated

That's a great question. Put it in reverse and just let it crawl backwards about 2". Then put it in neutral and try to unlock the center differential again. That should do it. ✌️ But if you never locked the center diff the flashing light may indicate a malfunction

In default the center differential is allowed to create different speeds front/rear to prevent driveline binding. When you lock the center it's like not having a differential. On pavement this will cause binding and damage. Offroad the wheels will allow for slip preventing damage.

Because in that case it would bind on asphalt, but if it's just setting permanent diff split it could still have forgiving measures to prevent damage... I can't find the information and there are plenty crossovers with center locking "clutches", not true lockers
