I know this is an old video. Just wanted to add that WD40 is NOT a lubricant. For the joints you should use a silicone based lubricant spray.

WD stands for water displacement. I don't understand how this product started being used as a lubricant. Those lubricant properties are only good for a couple of days.

Correct. GT85 is more appropriate, it's made by the WD40 company for lubricating.

One crucial step before doing the Gummi Pflege is to CLEAN the rubber seals of dirt. Mine actually had baked crud in some of the corners and cleaning them required gentle back and forth. Its a nice rewarding process. I also used a slightly more expensive grease, Krytox by Chemours, which works infinitely better than Gummi Pflege. I did try Gummi first but that didn't do much and applies as a liquid, where as Krytox applies as a grease that you kinda have to rub in with your fingers. Results were MUCH better with the latter.

Very helpful. Mercedes Benz sold me a tiny little bottle of lubricant for £51. This Gummi stuff is way cheaper and will save me a fortune. The rubbers on my car had never been looked at, so have gone hard and need lots of treatments.

Definitely. Use a Meguiars Interior detailer that's safe for rubber on a Microfiber wrapped around your finger.

Never use wd40 it's water based and will eventually make things rusty. Use a light lubbricating oil or krul oil is best

The consensus appears to be Gummi Pflege for door seals but Krytox for window seals due to the silicone properties of Krytox

Am just about to do the full GUMMI-PFLEGE procedure on all rubber seals/weather strips but am then going to get some White Lithium Grease for the "moving" parts of the convertible top. Is the normal WD-40 fine to use instead of the Lithium Grease?

Do not use white lithium grease on anything that comes into contact with anything made of rubber or plastic as it may degrade the material.

Is Lithium Grease or WD-40 the better way to go?
@slinkywizard
@slinkywizard 2 ай бұрын
Lithium grease product is the one. DO NOT use standard WD40, as it is a water displacer and can even work as a degreaser (so also remove what little grease you may have had left). WD do make a lithium grease spray like other companies, but your normal old original WD40 should be avoided.

I would advise not to use WD-40 for the lubrication task. You can see in your video already the amount of overspray, which is problematic. On top, WD-40 is not meant to lubricate parts that are metal to metal contact and it's too lightweight to really make much of a difference in lubrication beyond a few roof cycles. You should use a penetrating oil or white lithium grease as it is meant for metal to metal contact and would not attract dust and dirt the way WD-40 does. This is the same type of lubricant you would use on a garage door, for example.

Rubbish. I've used WD for many years for all kinds of uses. Even cleaned my engine bay on my old MX5 years back (avoiding rubber seals) despite people saying it would attract dirt. Couple of years and many miles later, never happened. I don't understand the internets hate for WD. It's almost like your comment was a straight copy and paste because it's filled with the same type of nonsense I've seen other people say about WD. Regarding this video, I use wet wipes now and then to clean the rubber seals, then I spray some silicone lubricant on a cloth and that's how I revitalise the rubber. Same goes for the window and door seals.
@REDNBLUEBROS1337
@REDNBLUEBROS1337 Жыл бұрын
@@DonPinguccio It is ok but there are much more specialised lubricants that will last longer and do a better job such as silicone spray or withe lithium. The former being much kinder to rubber seals.

WD40 on moving parts isn't great - it dries with a sticky residue so attracts dust and grime. Use a good quality silicone grease spray

wd40 is probably not the best product to lubricate the roof mechanism - it leaves a sticky residue that will attract dirt, turn it to gunge and make matters worse. it would probably be better to use a dry ptfe or silicone spray.
