I learned many years ago that satin is a fabric weave or finish, rather than a type of fabric. You can definitely have a silk satin -- or a silk georgette or silk charmeuse. You can also have polyester satin or rayon satin. It's all in the weave.

Satin is a fabric which can be made of silk, polyester or other man-made fibres. Silk is a fibre that be woven into many different fabrics - as you allude to e.g. satin, georgette, organza, velvet (rare now) etc.

Right! I wish more women knew this. If it just says “satin” it’s polyester. Price is a good indicator, too, you won’t see a silk shirt for $23.99.🙂
@kimberlyperrotis8962

Satin is actually a type of glossy weave, not a specific fiber, it can be woven out of several different fibers and blends. (All satins and were made from silk before the advent of man-made fibers). Unless specifically stated to be of genuine silk, it’s usually made from polyester, which is a plastic, so it’s not at all breathable. There are some rayon satins now, which are breathable (a manmade cellulosic fiber, not synthetic), but I haven’t found the ones from fast-fashion to iron well or look and feel as good as silk. Rayon does have a lot of silk-like properties and was made as a clothing fabric substitute for silk when all silk was needed for parachutes during WWII. Rayon quality varies a lot, it’s worth paying more for better versions of it. Most online searches for silk will offer polyester satin items that say “silky”, “silk-like” etc. in the product description, so double-check the description carefully and don’t buy if it doesn’t say 100% silk. This is a common trick on Amazon. Price is also a good guide, if it’s cheap, it isn’t genuine silk, keep looking. Quince has the lowest prices for genuine silk clothes that I’ve seen, and the fabric quality is good. Lily Silk is a step up both in quality and price, but still at fair prices, and they have a lot more variety, except in skirts. I highly recommend Quince’s silk skirts, they’re absolutely perfect and only $60 US, a steal.

I wore silk blouses for work in the 80's and 90's. Loved them. I find it amusing that a Chinese company is making silk blouses/clothing popular again with a massive advertising campaign and sponserships of so many social media influencers and personalities.

I prefer Naadam for cashmere. My problem with lilysilk is the sizing is too narrow and their fabric too transparent for my taste. I'm a 16/18US and their items are just literally too narrow. Same for Quince, which have some very nice things but really stop at 14US. LOL i do the tape thing. Get a big roll of brown packing take. Better surface area. Shoe maintenance is key. Shoddy shoes blow the whole image. You can really make any wash work but seriously, no distressing unless you are in your own home or garden. It's never classy.

I buy cashmere on sale from Land's End, Soft Surroundings, and Talbots. I prefer a longer length, and so many retailers sell sweaters that very short. I'm a size 20-22, and I don't want knits that are too tight or too short (that look like they shrank in the wash). Banana Republic, J Crew, etc. are too short. When I was a size 6 and high-waisted jeans were the norm, short was ok, but these days, short just doesn't work.

@@edennis8578 I feel you. I'm short waisted so I go for some of those retailers. Try Naadam, they run long. Talbits is just amazing. All my jackets are Talbots and they fit perfectly. (16wp)

Most of their woven silk items can be custom-sized, for free. The largest standard size they usually have is 12, my size, but I’m a bit thick-waisted, so that’s how I’ve been ordering from them in bottoms. The delivery takes longer, about three weeks vs. one where I am, but a good, comfy fit is worth the weight. This custom option doesn’t seem to apply to their knits.🙂

I was a fan of Lily Silk years before they started doing all these sponsored videos. Don’t be put off by the quantity of those, necessarily, I really love the brand and get zip-all for saying so. It’s the one brand where I can get affordable, but reliably high-quality, clothes. I’m not an influencer, just an ordinary consumer with a tight wardrobe budget. I buy better, but fewer items, and for life. Being in my 60s, I don’t want to have to keep replacing cheap items and I’m allergic to many synthetic fibers anyway, including polyester and acrylic, the most common ones. I have classic clothes and accessories that I bought in my early 20s and still love and wear them. My past fast-fashion items have mostly been donated within a year of purchase, usually because I can’t stand the fabrics or they fall apart, what a waste.

I agree with you about quality over quantity. Like you, I’m also in my 60’s and have learned it’s worth it to pay more for clothes I can wear for years. I have a Lilysilk blouse and it’s very nice. Ravella is another brand for silk. Their blouses are truly lovely. I have two I’ve worn for several years and they look brand new.

Why are so many KZbinrs using the word 'expensive' referring to a person? It implies the woman wants to have a price tag on her: high! Don't you mean classy, elegant, well dressed? Many expensively dressed people can look very ordinary if the lack good taste or style.

Silk is produced by silk-worms feeding on mulberry-trees until they will be thrown alive into boiling water. Satin can be produced as cotton-Satin, for example. Satin is not a Fibre but a way of weaving. Hermine, Austria

Lilysilk - it seems to be everywhere and in every country🤔 What is the difference between normal silk and mulberry silk?
@kimberlyperrotis8962
@kimberlyperrotis8962 Жыл бұрын
Nothing, genuine silk is always made by silkworms who feed on mulberry trees. It’s just a marketing ploy, Lily Silk makes it sound like silk is made from the trees themselves, it isn’t. The worms manufacture their cocoons with the silk filaments they excrete (like spiders make their web filaments), then are killed, often boiled alive, and the silk fibers extracted. I know they feel pain, I’ve dissected worms and they have a central nervous system just like we do. (When I learned that this animal cruelty is involved, it took a lot the pleasure out of wearing silk for me but being allergic to synthetics, it’s the only soft fabric that I can wear). Lily Silk is trying to obscure this fact, just as fast-fashion brands are trying to make their polluting plastic fabrics sound “eco-friendly”). Everyone is using marketing tricks about something, it seems. But if you are ok with wearing silk, I do recommend the brand, it’s more affordable than most and reliably high quality. It’s a very personal choice, like wearing leather, and I don’t criticize anyone’s position on these things, life is a matter of making compromises. I decided that I can wear leather if it’s from animals killed for food, but not just raised for their skins or fur, for example. Great question!🙂

I don't go too many places. I go to the market and I eat out on Friday nights. And I tend to want to hold on to what I used to wear when I was younger. That won't stop. The only other place I might go is Puerto Rico now and again where my in-laws live. But it would be a touristy look alot of the times. Being a little larger than I want does not help my efforts either. Haircut - keeping my hair as long as I can while I can. I prefer it longer. Accessories - I wear what is comfortable. I don't get dressed up very often. I carry one purse - black in color - it goes with everything. Jewelry - Not a jewelry person. I try to find styles I can wear everyday. I only coordinate if I dress up. Denim - I choose dark denim for one reason - to hide my flaws.

I like your fashion advice, but I haven’t subscribed because I just can’t relate to your colorful, tropical, super coordinated-print and -color style at all (everything from Lily Pulitzer), you just don’t have anything in your wardrobe that I would wear. Sorry, I’m just trying to give helpful feedback. My style is very classic, elegant, mostly cool-toned light neutrals and basic colors like blues, greens, etc., and I prefer high-quality natural fiber fabrics like silk. I get most of my wardrobe from LilySilk, Quince, Theory, Equipment, Restoration, J.Crew, etc. YT is a highly visual medium, I need to see clothes and accessories that I like, or I don’t get much value from a fashion channel. (San Francisco area, age 62). 🙂

...... Thank you. I was thinking that as well, I just hadn't commented on it as yet. All the " Lily Pulitzer " and I saw barely anything in her wardrobe I'd actually wear. I am 68 years young, I've worn classic, classy clothing since High School, with a few " fun , edgey pieces " to mix in. Gemma at " What to Wear " Channel has classic styles, and mixes up a little " edgey " pieces every so often. I haven't subscribed to this particular Channel here, I watch every so often to see if she's changing things up . ...however, apparently not. Lol.
