I really enjoy your channel, Deirdre! I try to take your ideas and do them on the cheap. I do a LOT of resale/thrift store shopping. So I'm looking for silk, linen, merino wool, wool and cashmere for that "expensive look" on the cheap. My go-to for elegance is black with an accent, say a scarf. I NEVER spend big bucks on purses. i try to find good purses on the cheap. And if I can, the same with shoes. I never skimp on underwear or socks. Wearing earrings as yo have nicely finishes an outft and takes it up a notch! I'm a professional singer so for me to look chic and elegant, I might wear black pants, a solid, darker color top (royal, purple, red, erc.) and one piece of statement jewelry which people IMMEDIATELY notice and say how eleagnt I look. For my niece's wedding I wore black head to toe with fascinator hat and a fuschia duster. I gottons of comliments; even my brother said how elegant I looked.

Oh, I am a pointed toe shoe girl and have been for years!! Nowadays flat due to neuropathy in my feet but they completely elevate the look of all types of jeans and pants. I have so many pairs of them and will always wear them as they just look so smart, even with casual pants.

Good advice Deirdre. Monochrome outfits always look very expensive to me. It's true about patterns making you look cheaper. I use to wear patterns often, in fact, looking back at older vacation pictures I wonder "omg what was I wearing" and I cringe. Now that I only wear stripes or polka dot prints I look much classier and expensive. The tips about the minimal jewelry and sunglasses are ones I abide by also. Keep the good content coming.

Dear Deirdre, great video, I loved all your tips! You're absolutely right - monochromatic looks, neutral solid colors and sunglasses can do wonders. I wear glasses but I can't wear contact lenses. Two years ago I finally decided to buy a pair of classic-looking prescription sunglasses. They weren't cheap but the made me look and feel fantastic! I always have them for outdoors, originally to reduce glare when working outside as part of my career (geologist). But, in our very shiny, reflective cities I found that I need them most of the days anyway, here in sunny California. They double my Rx vision costs, but are so worth it, I feel more, not only comfortable, but more confident in them than my clear glasses. My last pair cost $800, ouch! And also as much again for the clear ones.🙂

Oh my gosh - we are SO on the same page! Your style is PERFECT! There’s just one thing you advise that I can’t do but love - the pointy toe with a feminine heel. My toes need space, and I walk with my feet out (it’s a hip/femur thing I’ve always had). On your taupe boots, to me, they’re perfect with those pants, but just need to be paired with a chunkier sweater for balance. 🙂

I love your tips here. What I love about the “dressing expensively” look is the intentionality of it. This intentionality was out of style from the late 90s until the last few years, nothing could match, evenly roughly, or coordinate, and be considered creative or stylish. We now are again admiring put-together, polished style, but in my book it never “went out”. We had a US version of the What Not to Wear TV show during most of that period and I just couldn’t relate to a purple purse, lime green shoes, and baby blue or orange shoes on top of random clothes colors and patterns. (A lot of their other advice was good, though). I didn’t buy that many items during that period, except for functional things like leggings and tees, I never really liked anything, like the ubiquitous black catsuit with the oversized front zipper. The elements of an outfit should be styled to work together. I also love the lighter neutrals, like you. I rarely wear dark or bright colors.

Hi Deidre! Thank you for another great video. Id love to hear what not to do if you want to look elegant, classy or expensive. Do not wear too much makeup, do not carry or wear too many logos, if any, do not have fake nails, or bleach blonde hair, do not talk loud. Also any handbag thats too large ruins a classy outfit, and for us older women over 60, dressing too hip trying to look young ruins any chance of looking elegantly expensive.

I don’t even consider anything in a synthetic fiber (poly, acrylic, etc.) or material (like plastic shoes). If it’s not a natural fiber or genuine leather, I skip over it until I find something I do love. (I do wear breathable, manmade, cellulosic fabrics like lyocell and rayon, they’re not plastics, but their quality can vary tremendously - the thin viscose used by fast-fashion brands doesn’t perform well or look high quality. I fell in love with your videos. I'm learning a lot! I was wondering if there is any style advice for thick calves? I hate them. Feels like no skirt looks good on me. Hi there. I think maxi skirts are a great option in your case. Or a skirt which stops as your calf is thinning down towards your ankle. As you say, shoes can be key. With a maxi skirt, ballet flats work well or sandals for the summer, of course. A little heel would be great too. I hope this helps. Xx

I absolutely love Robes like that ,that are silk. I have a black one, a cream one , I have a velvet one that I wear in the winter ,it was expensive but I’ve had it for 10 years and it looks like it’s brand new, and I wear it almost every day. That’s the difference when you buy things that are a little more expensive they last forever….

I wear navy in warmer months and black in colder months. My colors are ‘Fall’ and I look great in browns, greens, gold, rust, ivory and beige tones. U don’t wear white at my face. But white slacks are a great summer 2024 change and it is a bottom element. My skin is warm-toned and not cool. Turquoise colors I can wear and that and peach tone work well as ‘universal colors’ for all skin tones usually. I had my colors done years ago and have further researched this. But not every season do the manufactures make clothing in my color pallette. So I look for scarves and accessories which may add a punch of color to neutrals in my color range. This helps with my hair color and skin tone to put a scarf at the neckline. A great video!
