How to Loom Knit a Dog Sweater

This video is about how to loom knit a dog sweater. You will need a 31 peg loom, loom knitting tool, tapestry needle, bulky yarn (#5 or #6), tape measure, stitch markers, and a pair of scissors.
The knit dog sweater pattern uses basic stitches called Ewrap and purl. We are using the basic bind off method to get the sweater off the loom.

Being new to looming, I made a 2 coloured dog coat for my toy poodle, I made one and the neck was a little too big so I tried again but put a drawstring cast on, that way I could make it to the perfect size....it turned out great...thanks very much for your great detailed instructions!!

I finally got around to writing down your pattern. It is so cold here in the Desert that normally this time of the year it is around 75 degrees but we have been under a cold blast from the northwest so we are 43 at night which is not pleasant for we desert rats! and daytime about 60's brrrrrrr. I don't have forced air and cooling so my doggie and I bundle up. The cat seems oblivious to the cold so he snoozes in his box! Thanks once more for your time looming and then uploading the video. I know it takes a load of time to do both.

I made 2 of these sweaters, both necks were way too big, so after I finished I added the sweater back on a loom one size smaller on the neck line and knitted, pearl, knit pearl and bound off, if the loom didn't have the same amount of pegs I doubled every 4th one or so whatever was necessary to bring the neck down to a smaller size. Came out perfect. I dont think you could start on a smaller loom and go larger though, it would be too tight.

I have the problem that the neck is to big on one loom and the body is to small on the smaller loom...I tried to use the smaller loom for the neck and then transfer it to the larger loom but that doesn't work...I need help

Your video tutorial is GREAT! I only have one suggestion though....I would've liked to have seen the finished sweater in more detail on your dog. The video ended a little bit too quickly. J J St Cyr I had a dachshund so it was a good 10-15 rounds because he was long. What you can do is measure your dog from the cut off down and knit the inches of length. Does that make sense?😁

Very good tutorial. Also, I think it is important how you make yours in that is is not restrictive, especially around the neck. It looks so comfy! I will try to make one for my cat and see what happens😲. Do I just decrease less pegs and knit less rows for the holes, and measure the cat for the main body length and adjust accordingly? Gina, great video! one question, after doing the 20 rows of e stitch, how do you get your working yarn moved over to the arm hole pegs (the cast off pegs)? I'm using a 41 peg loom and leaving 7 pegs for the chest. I started just as you demonstrated, the first peg to the right of the anchor peg, so when I'm done with my 20th row my last stitch is the anchor peg. What do I do to move my working yarn 3 pegs over to cast off for the arm hole? thank you so much in advance.

Gina, you're video is great! But when you come around the loom to where you begin the second leg hole, it's very easy for a beginner to get lost. I am intelligent, (I like to think!) but I have had to re-start a few times now because it becomes unclear exactly what to do, especially at the point where you almost finish the second leg hole. The verbal instructions sort of stop and the camera isn't catching the full view, And dummies like me need to see the whole loom, from time to time, to make sure we didn't mess up! P.S. You have a very nice voice. :)

zabeth999 Yes the 25 peg loom should work great for your dog! :-) This pattern will work the same on a 24 peg loom.

You could find a child's or toddler's leg warmers pattern and just give them leg warmers rather than an all-in-one. Be easier to get it on them too. :)

I want to make this for my sil's yorkie. She weighs between 7-9 pounds and her length from neck to tail is 11". The neck on one of her current sweaters is 12". I don't have access to the dog. I was thinking that this might fit her as-is since yours is a mini doxie, or maybe on a 24 peg loom?

Sandy Beggs As long as the dog you’re making it for is tiny it should be fine. I actually have to bump mine up a loom as it’s getting too tight for him. He’s about 15 pounds now. So I am going to make one on the 36 peg loom. I hope that helps! 🙂❤️

Ali Smith Hello! I am so glad you are here. What kind of looms do you have? For the Maltese I would use a 30 peg loom depending. Are they full grown? I would use a 24 peg loom for the chihuahua. No matter how many times I’ve redone the neck part it always looks longer than yours does. I’m using the same yarn on a 31 peg loom for 20 rows just like you are. I would say it’s double the length of yours. Any ideas on what’s going on? Thanks

Another question... what type of dog do you think is the biggest this pattern will fit? Cocker spaniel, border collie? I have a Lhasa Apso/poodle mix. About 30 pounds.
